“Ledyba?” Aly was confused at this last comment and looked out onto the field. She somehow was just now noticing that the field was filled with a bunch of Ledyba, happily eating from the flowers. “You were right about Ledyba loving these plants! But, what do you plan to do now that we found them?” Aly said confused. “Well, I was hoping to add one of them to my team. I rather like Ledyba as well as other bug Pokemon in general. Now, we need to see if one is willing to join us. Everyone, can you help me find a friendly Ledyba to join our adventure?” At this last request, Lirio’s Pokemon began to move through the field, attempting to get a Ledyba to join them in their adventure. Calla meant well, but the leaf on its head made it camouflage too well and it often scared the Ledyba when it appeared and said hello. Amaryllis walked through the field left and right but seemed to not find a Ledyba that it found satisfying. Aster and Oakland attempted to find a suitable Ledyba, but they were a bit too afraid to get closer to the Pokemon even if they seemed friendly. Papillio moved quickly from each of the flowers with Ledyba but did not seem to find any it liked. Beryl was simply happy to be in the field and got a bit distracted by prancing in the field and playing with the Ledyba rather than trying to get them to join their team. Lirio watched how each of his Pokemon tackled the task and was rather amused watching them. “They don’t seem to be doing a good job…” Aly pointed out. “True, but they are trying, plus I thought it would be fun to see how they would attempt the task. Isn’t this amusing to watch?” Lirio replied laughing a bit at the sight of his Pokemon in the field. “You are right about that! I guess having so many different Pokemon can make even something as simple as catching a Ledyba a fun endeavor.” Lirio paused from watching for a moment and focused on finding a Ledyba. He walked around a bit through the field, gently patting some Ledyba, talking to them a bit as he tried to get a feel for each of their personalities. However, he did not feel a particularly strong connection with any of them. It wasn’t until he noticed one timidly watching him from the shadows that his interest was piqued. Just as he was about to grab a flower to offer it though, a Beedrill appeared from out of the forest. It began to bully the Ledyba for nectar from the flowers. Without warning, the timid Ledyba flew at the Beedrill and swiftly threw out a series of punches. The Beedrill was a bit dazed and confused by the attack, as it seemed used to simply pushing the Ledyba out of its way without any retaliation. Seeing this, the other Ledyba began to join in and attack the Beedrill as well. After receiving a flurry of attacks, the overwhelmed Beedrill flew back into the forest. “Wow! I didn’t think Ledyba were usually aggressive!” Aly said in amazement. “They aren’t, but that one had the courage to stand up the bully Beedrill. I believe I found the one that I want to join me on my adventure.” Lirio said pointing at the Ledyba that returned to its hiding spot where it was previously watching Lirio. Surprised it seemed to be spotted, it made a futile attempt to hide more by huddling slightly closer to the ground and closing its eyes. Lirio grinned at the sight and stopped a couple of steps away from it where he knelt and offered it some berries from the group’s breakfast forage. “I promise I won’t bully you like that Beedrill did. Here, you can take them if you’d like.” Lirio said as gently as he could. The timid Ledyba opened its eyes to see the berries in Lirio’s hand. It slowly but surely came out of hiding and took them one-by-one from him before eating them happily. “You must have a lot of courage to have done what you did. How would you like to join us on our Pokemon adventure?” Asking this question, Lirio pulled out a Pokeball and offered it to the Pokemon. The Ledyba was a bit hesitant at first, but as if it had collected all of its resolve at once, quickly pressed the button on the ball and was transported inside of it. After the ball stopped shaking from the capture, Lirio immediately sent out the Ledyba. “I would like to call you ‘Kanan.’ It means gallant, a rather fitting name, I think.” The Ledyba smiled at this offer. Aly was surprised at the way Lirio had captured the Ledyba. “I thought you had to weaken a Pokemon first to capture it!” “There is more than one way to make a new friend,” Lirio said as he patted Kanan’s head. “Now, I believe it is time we get you back on your journey. Let’s gather up my Pokemon and we can head back to Cherrygrove City together. Then, I can show you the path to get to New Bark Town.” Aly nodded and helped Lirio gather his Pokemon. With Pokemon gathered, they all followed the path back to Cherrygrove City. Lirio led them all back to the Pokemon Center where he showed Aly the path to New Bark Town. “Just follow that path straight until you reach New Bark Town. It isn’t too far of a walk to there from here. You can make it before nightfall.” “Thank you so much for all of your help, Lirio! I can tell you are definitely going places. I think for me, the jury is still out on that one, but I will try my best. I hope I get to see you again sometime! Oh, also, I have a couple of gifts for you too to show my thanks! A family member gave them to me when I said I was going on a journey, but I think you will probably be able to use them better than I could!” Aly said as she hugged and handed him what he recognized as a scope lens. “This is really too much! I can’t take this from you!” Lirio said, initially rejecting the gift. “Don’t worry about it! If you hadn’t helped me, I would have been lost forever and never even gotten the chance to use it! Just take it!” Lirio hesitantly took the item and said goodbye to Aly. As she walked down the path to New Bark Town, the two waved goodbye to each other.

Having said goodbye to Aly, Lirio and his Pokemon walked into the Pokemon Center. Although he would prefer to keep all of his Pokemon with him, he knew that having more than six would be a bit hard to handle. He decided to call his parents at the Pokemon Center with the intent to send one of his Pokemon to his parents. He updated them on his journey so far and introduced them to all of his Pokemon. Although he thought the choice of who to send would be difficult, his mother instantly fell in love with the bashful Aster. As such, when he told them he would need to send one of his Pokemon to them to be watched over for the time being, she asked if he could send Aster. Aster was a bit unsure of being sent to be with people she had never met, but Lirio promised her that she would be well taken care of and that his parents were nice people. After hearing this, Aster agreed to be sent away, the other Pokemon saying goodbye to her before Lirio returned her to her Pokeball and used the telecomputer to send over the Pokeball to his parents. After confirming that Aster had made it to them safely, Lirio said goodbye to them. He decided it was time to meet back up with Thomas. He checked his Pokegear and dialed Thomas, asking him where he was when he answered the call.

He took his time to the Center, enjoying in the most recent victory. Though his Sizzlipede was only a baby, it was able to beat wild Pokemon twice as strong as him due to the type advantage. Thomas knew they would be relying on that for the second Gym Leader of the Region, who he believed used a team of bugs. The Fire- and Ice-Type of Sizzlipede and Snom would be extremely important when that time came. Of course he hoped Snom would be stronger before then, because he would need the Ice Bug for Falkner.
He soon found himself walking right up to the Pokemon Center. He went in to have his Pokemon looked at and on his way out he found Lirio. "Hey there." He said with a smile. "Been out keeping busy, training and catching Pokemon?" He hoped the boy would have made some new friends in the time they were separated, because it would give him confidence as a new Trainer. "If so, we should introduce our Pokemon to each other."

Lirio received a response from Thomas saying he would be at the Pokemon Center shortly to meet him. While he was waiting, he decided to get his Pokemon all healed up before they continue on their journey. This didn’t take long with the Center’s machines and Lirio received his Pokemon in their Pokeballs after a short wait. Lirio was left waiting a bit more for Thomas. While he was waiting, he decided to talk to the Pokemon Center’s move guru in hopes of teaching one of his Pokemon a move by exchanging the transfer paper he had. Lirio walked up to the gentleman behind a counter in the main room and explained that he wanted to use his transfer. However, the gentleman rejected his request and offered advice instead. “I think you should hold onto something as valuable as that until your Pokemon are a bit stronger and there is a really special move you want your Pokemon to learn. Perhaps when your Caterpie evolves into Butterfree, that would be a good time to use one of these. In fact, I can see that your Pokemon have a lot of potential when they get a bit stronger. As such, I’ll give you an extra one since you’ll probably still end up wanting to teach all of your Pokemon moves later. Hope this helps you out on your journey!” “Thank you for your wisdom, sir, and for the transfer paper! I will use it wisely in the future,” Lirio replied. The conversation about learning moves reminded Lirio of the Big Mushroom he still had in his backpack that he and his Pokemon found the other day. He decided it would be a good time to have Kanan eat it in hopes it would remember a strong move from its childhood. Lirio took out the mushroom and released Kanan from his Pokeball. “If you eat this, you’ll become a bit stronger. It doesn’t taste bad either, in fact, I hear it tastes rather delicious, not sweet like the nectar you are used to though,” Lirio said, offering the mushroom to the refreshed Pokemon. Kanan seemed a bit hesitant at first, but it seemed to him that Lirio thought eating the mushroom would be a good idea. So, Kanan ate the mushroom, closing its eyes as it consumed the whole thing in one bite. A sudden memory flashed before Kanan’s eyes. He remembered his parents using a strong, punching move to destroy rocks when he was younger. Why they had to took a bit more focus to remember, but after a brief moment, it became clear. The rocks they were destroying were falling from somewhere, somewhere above where Kanan was in the memory. It seemed that while playing near a cliff, a rockslide occurred up above and the Pokemon did not notice until it was too late to escape. Suddenly, he remembered his parents being there and destroying the rocks with this punching attack, turning them to rubble. Where were his parents now? Lirio watched as he saw his Ledyba with its eyes still closed punching the air with what appeared to be a drain punch attack. Lirio was unsure what Kanan was thinking, but it seemed that the mushroom reminded his Pokemon of this strong attack. He waited a moment before calling to Kanan and rousing his Pokemon back to the present. “You time travelled for a moment, it seems,” Lirio said, jokingly. From somewhere else in the Pokemon Center, Lirio heard his name being called by a familiar voice. He looked around to see that it was Thomas, who was walking towards him. Kanan noticed the unknown person walking toward them and immediately hid behind Lirio’s leg. Lirio laughed to himself for a moment at his timid Pokemon. Thomas greeted him and asked what Lirio had been up to before suggesting the two introduce their Pokemon to each other. “I have been out adventuring, making new friends and training. I think it would be a great idea to introduce our Pokemon to each other considering we will be travelling with each other for the foreseeable future! Perhaps we should do that outside though so as not to cause a commotion inside the building.”

Thomas agreed with going outside and began to walk out. Lirio was about to follow, but Kanan tugged at his leg. “It is okay, Kanan. He is a friend. We are about to meet more of his friends too. They are Pokemon like you and the others.” The Ledyba flew onto Lirio’s shoulders and hid behind his head the whole time they walked outside following Thomas. Thomas was the first to let out his Pokemon. He mentioned something about a temperamental Pokemon, but Lirio decided to not bring it up in conversation again as it seemed Thomas had a good reason to not let this Pokemon out of its Pokeball at the time. Lirio released his other Pokemon from their Pokeballs. Amaryllis noticed Kanan on Lirio’s shoulder and immediately jumped up to occupy his other shoulder. “You’ve already met Amaryllis and Calla, but I don’t believe you have met Kanan, the Ledyba on my right shoulder that is rather timid most of the time, but brave when he needs to be. There is also the jolly Beryl here,” Lirio said, gesturing to both Kanan on his shoulder and Beryl who was on the ground smiling happily. “There is also Papilio the Catepie who is a bit devious at times. Oh, and also Oakland the Turtwig here who happens to be hiding behind my leg. He is also a bit timid, but I hope he’ll come out of his shell a bit as we travel together more.”

Butterfree approached Caterpie, who would one day be a Butterfree just like her. It was the one Pokemon she would be most familiar with, and therefore have the most confidence to approach. "Hello. Papilio, wasn't it? That's a unique name." Butterfree trilled in a high and friendly voice. At the same time, Vivillon flew up to Beryl. She examined the Water-Type Pokemon curiously. "I've never seen a Pokemon like you before. You must be an otter." She said knowledgeably. "I've heard of otters of course. You must swim very well." Naturally she had no idea how wrong she was.
Snom was hesitant, but nervously approached Lirio. Lirio had two Pokemon on his shoulders, and if Snom was going to have to meet all the others, meeting two would be faster than meeting one at a time. "I'm Snom. It's... it's nice to meet you all." Lirio would of course have no idea what Snom was saying, but his Pokemon would be able to understand. Sirfetch'd meanwhile kept his distance for the moment, keeping watch to make sure they were not interrupted in what he considered to be a terribly unsafe and undefended location. Thomas’ Pokemon made the first move in the introductions, with his Vivillon and Butterfree coming up first. The Butterfree approached Papillio and the two seemed to be having a nice conversation together. The Vivillon flew up to Beryl and seemed to be examining her curiously. Beryl gave a confused look to the flying Pokemon which amused Lirio. Thomas’ Sizzlipede disappeared somewhere and his Sirfetch’d kept its distance from the group. Snom timidly approached to say hi to Lirio, Amaryllis, and Kanan. He carefully knelt down, making sure to not cause his Pokemon to fall from his shoulders, and greeted the small bug Pokemon. Oakland and Kanan stayed hiding while Amaryllis turned her face away from the Snom. Calla crawled up to it and gave it a friendly hello. “Well, I suppose they have mostly all said hello. Perhaps we should start heading towards Violet City? I wanted to stop by Dark Cave briefly to look for a particular Pokemon there before we arrive at the city,” Lirio suggested as he stood back up. He wanted to catch a Shuckle knowing that the Bug/Rock Pokemon will help him battle Falkner and later Bugsy, as his team currently had a glaring weakness to both of the main types they used.

That only meant that she had more time to keep honing her skills and resources to make sure that she would have her best chance when it came time for her to stand against the organization alone. The Pokemon that she was confident in bringing to the Johto Region’s Elite Four were coming along nicely, and she had even gathered a few more Pokemon for herself as she did some small bits of traveling, including the curious encounter of what she came to know was an Ultra Beast. It seemed that the dimensional rifts that had happened and caused that catastrophe might have happened in a few different parts of the world before things settled down, and one of those creatures had made its way into the Johto Region. After his initial analysis of the Ultra Beasts while they spent their time in Alola, Minthos had picked up on the signature of the beast in question while they traveled. It was an incredibly tall, lanky thing, with no defined facial features, or really any features at all that would show it as a living thing. It was just a big bundle of electrical wires and a giant shimmering spark as a ‘head’. With the Beast Ball in hand that Demeter had held onto from those scientists in Alola, Demeter had wanted to see what the failed Rocket experiment was capable of and let the Quanger lose on the Ultra Beast. To her surprise, either the Ultra Beast was weak or the abomination was much stronger than she might have initially thought, as it felled the Ultra Beast with little to no issue. The capture was easy then, and Demeter knew that the Xurkitree was going to be a valuable asset from that point. The more Pokemon she could hide from Cipher, the more assets she could train and strengthen, the easier it was going to be for her to overthrow things and get her point across. There was no way that any of her ‘colleagues’ were going to know how to defend against an Ultra Beast, something so unfamiliar and unpredictable, and that was just what she wanted.
Now standing among a crowd in Cherrygrove City, Demeter made sure that she had her things in order for the endeavor that she was about to embark on. It turned out that the Global Trade Station from Sinnoh was hosting, and funding, a race around the world to collect stamps at the various Pokemon Centers. Now, in and of itself, that was of very little interest, but the allure of a cash prize stated later on, now that was something that Demeter could get behind. Anything that she could get that could go towards funding for her solo career in the near future, that was something that she wasn’t going to let escape her. However, after having received the letter from her superiors while she was in Alola, Demeter was careful to make sure that her part in this event wasn’t going to flag any unwanted attention. She and Loki devised a rather brilliant plan, and by the time that the race was getting ready to begin, they were ready to execute their ploy. Leaving all of her cipher registered Pokemon in Johto, and making sure that their connection to Cipher wouldn’t flag outside of her target zone, Loki was going to remain in the Johto Region illusioned as Demeter while she traveled the world to collect the stamps for the cash prize. She would bring with her the new Pokemon that she had garnered to keep building her forces, and Calcifer as her right hand for now. Knowing that there would be little to now way for Cipher to have any notion that she wasn’t in the Johto Region, even leaving most of her communication devices in Johto with Loki, she was confident that this would all go over swimmingly.

Elfana Aroway Mahogany Town was, without a doubt, the low point of Johto. Even Cherrygrove was nice in comparison. Not nice enough to spend the night in but an improvement overall. She considered going straight through like the had the last few cities before she remembered her plan to spend more time with her team. Pantalaimon would love the plant life in the area. Cranberry would be happy for a chance to run. She found a comfortable area along the river to let her Pokemon out, making sure to keep a close eye on Cranberry. She was not going to have a repeat of the ocean! That had been the plan anyway. Despite her best attempts, she still found herself fishing him out of the river before they went searching for somewhere to stop for dinner. She wasn't sure if the fact that she was soaked or the Cranidos she was attempting to carry was drawing more attention to her. Honestly, she didn't care either way. Elfana didn't acknowledge the curious and concerned looks she was receiving from the staff at the restaurant they stopped in, focusing instead on making sure her Pokemon ate most of their food. Her own plate was mostly untouched. It was a wonder she didn't starve with how infrequently she remembered that most people needed to eat. Their next stop was the Pokemon Center. Her earlier assessment of the city was forgotten after her book was stamped. The Pokemon Center was a perfect place to sleep. She went upstairs, passing out almost as soon as she laid down in the bed she had requested for the night. Between her lack of sleep the previous night and trying to keep up with her team, she was worn out. For the first time in a long while, she managed to get a decent night's rest. You wouldn't have known it with how irritated she looked in the morning. She disliked wasting more time than necessary on sleep. Elfana showered and collected her things, preparing to head to the next town. She had already spent enough time in Cherrygrove. Most of her team had been returned, save for the happy Turtwig and the Rotom that lived in her phone. The next couple of towns felt like something that Pantalaimon would like so she had decided to carry him along with her. After a small breakfast, the group continued on towards the next town.Johto

Elfana Aroway Elfana decided to stop for food in Cherrygrove. Walter would likely start insisting she eat soon anyway. She would forget that she was supposed to eat otherwise. She was behaving like there was a schedule even though there wasn't one. Yet. Eating, sleeping, and other distractions would eat into the time she had to complete more important tasks. She was aware that it was a terrible habit but she had zero interest in trying to break it. They stopped in a small cafe with a lovely view of the river. She ordered coffee and the most basic sandwich she could find on the menu and let the Pokemon out with her order whatever they way. Her food was picked at but she didn't try to eat much of anything until the Alakazam reminded her too. She was too distracted trying to find a route to Pallet Town. There appeared to be a connecting train in Newbark Town. She was excited about this. The first train ride had been fun and she was looking forward to the next. After they finished eating and paid for their meal, the little group moved on, Teleporting straight through to Newbark Town.

She walked into the Pokemon Center, collected her stamp, and booked a room to take an hour-long nap after such a long flight. Lucy remained with the dragons, and they occupied themselves with goofing around while Kira slept. When she woke up, she left the Pokemon Center to find them all nearby. That was good, at least she wouldn't have to go looking for them. "Alright, are you all ready?" She asked. There were shouts of consent and then they all left Cherrygrove City.

Then from Blackthorn City, Emiri knew that she would need to head west towards Mahogany Town and then finally back south the short distance over the forest to Violet City to finish the race and collecting all of the stamps. The end was in sight, and as Emiri and her Pokemon skirted over the tree line in moving east through the air, Cherrygrove City was coming up in the near distance for their next visit.
The baby had since decided that he wanted to spend some time in Emiri’s lap as they remained on Charizard’s back, so as they moved through the buildings and landed outside of the Pokemon Center, Emiri helped herself down from Charizard’s saddle and helped the baby hop down onto the ground with her, and they went into the Pokemon Center together to get her next stamp. His wings flitted and his ears twitched at each new thing he got to see and sniff, and before too long Emiri had her next stamp in her booklet and was able to go out to meet her Pokemon to continue on their way. Upon arriving in Cherrygrove City, Lucas and Rita promptly visited the Pokemart for some shopping. Lucas picked up some items to add to his collection. He didn't think he needed them immediately, but in the long run the items would prove to be useful. He talked briefly with the cashier about the surrounding area. He was amused to find out that the city has a decently active harbor and lots of trainers that specialized in water types came by to train their Pokemon. Rita seemed to perk up at the idea of training. She was listening the the conversation intently, nodding along with Lucas as he talked to the clerk. Eventually the pair left the store and started to explore the rest of the City. Rita spent a lot of the walk attentively looking around at her surroundings, looking for something, not anything in particular, but something. Lucas took note of this, stopped, knelt down, and smiled.
"Rita, are you wound up from all the talk of training?" He asked. Rita looked up at the man and bumped her head against his knee. "Are you wanting to battle something? Is that it?" In response, Rita headbutted Lucas again and then smiled. "Haha, alright. Let's go see if we can find anything to help with your training. We'll start off small since this is your first battle, alright?" Lucas stood back up and looked around the area for wild Pokemon. Rita happily followed him as they got closer to the nearby trees. Lucas peered into the shade of the foliage and spotted a Kakuna in a nearby tree. Lucas stopped and crouched down to Rita.
"Okay, so you see that Kakuna? We're going to practice with it." Rita looked at Lucas with a frown. Lucas shrugged. "I know it's an underwhelming Pokemon, but if I catch it maybe you can have a future Beedrill friend. As much as I don't really like bugs, I'm willing to make this exception so that you can have a friend other than me. How does that sound?" Rita closed her eyes and nodded in acknowledgement before facing the Kakuna, awaiting Lucas's instruction. "You know two moves, Growl and Tackle. Most Kakuna's are endurance Pokemon. You're going to want to attack quickly or it'll just increase it's defense." Rita nodded and focused her attention on the Pokemon ahead. The Kakuna already saw Rita and used Harden to resist her attacks. "Well, it's now or never. Rita, use Tackle!" Lucas commanded. At this, Rita leapt at Kakuna and tackled it to the ground. The Kakuna took damage but only hardened its shell once more. Rita got off the Kakuna and promptly tackled it again. The Kakuna was still conscious, much to Rita's annoyance. "It does that a lot! You just need to hit it one more time and I'll be able to catch it!" The Kakuna hardened one more time, but it was to no avail since Rita tackled it once more, knocking the bug Pokemon into the bark of a tree. The Kakuna lay unconscious and Rita stood proud, turning to face Lucas. Lucas ran over with a Pokeball in hand and threw it at the Kakuna. The Kakuna went into the ball in a flash of light. The ball shook a few times before stilling, marking a successful catch. Lucas picked up the Pokeball and shivered. "It's all for the journey, Lucas. Having a bug Pokemon might not be so bad... maybe. I'll call you Ves. I know bees and wasps aren't the same thing, but it sounds cool I guess," Lucas said to the Pokeball before putting the ball where Lucas kept Rita's. Rita proudly marched towards Lucas, pleased with herself.
"You did well, Rita! You beat him in three moves. I knew you could do it!" he said, scooping Rita up into his arms. Rita chirped happily while Lucas giggled as the two celebrated their first victory. "Now, let's go get the two of you healed up so we can meet your new friend, yeah?" Rita nodded and the two set off towards the Pokemon Center to help their new partner. Lucas finally made it to the counter for the Pokemon Center. Lucas handed the Pokeballs that contained the members of his team to the nurse and waited while she healed them. Lucas quickly pulled out his journal and jotted down some notes on his experience with Ves and noted the things he's learned about both Cherrygrove and Violet city. He had chatted with other trainers while waiting his turn and got to hear about several people’s adventures through the area. He also found out that the first Gym Leader specialized in Flying type Pokemon, which admittedly made Lucas nervous since his party solely consisted of Pokemon that were weak to Flying types. He brushed the nerves aside and reminded himself he didn’t have to be in a hurry to get to Violet City and was definitely not ready to challenge the gym with his Pokemon being so new to his team. He figured he’d spend some more time in Cherrygrove or hanging out in Violet City before he ventured very far so he could get to know Rita and Ves a bit more.
In no time the nurse called for Lucas and he collected his Pokemon before heading out of the building. He walked around the city looking for a place to sit and chose a spot in the sand by the water. If he looked out far enough he could see people swimming in the open water and having Pokemon battles on small islands of sand that dotted the port. Lucas took a deep breath and pulled out the Pokeballs from his bag and brought out Rita and Ves. Rita happily walked up to Lucas, very excited to see him again after not seeing him for a short while.
“You missed me already? You were only gone for a few minutes,” Lucas teased. Rita huffed and turned away from Lucas, feigning offense. Lucas laughed quietly and pet the leaf on Rita’s head, straightening it out after the wind folded it a little. Rita quickly lost her upset persona and smiled at Lucas. She then turned towards the other Pokemon on the beach with them. Ves only stood in the sand for a few seconds before gravity made him fall to the ground. Ves silently stared at the sky and started vibrating in an attempt to move. Lucas reluctantly reached over and picked up the Kakuna, pushed some of the sand into a tall pile, and leaned Ves against the pile so the bug Pokemon would be at a stable angle. Rita walked up to Ves and tried to greet him with a smile. Ves chittered frustratedly to Rita’s offense.
“Now, now. No fighting,” Lucas said to the two Pokemon. He pulled out a few snacks from his bag that he kept with him for such situations. ”Here, I made them myself. If you like them, then you can have more if you treat each other well.” He held one piece of food in each hand and held one out for Rita and the other he offered to Ves. Rita happily ate up the treat and looked to her new Pokemon companion. Ves, without thinking too much, ate the piece offered to him and let out a happy chitter. Lucas was a bit grossed out by the feeling of the bug eating out of his hand but accepted that it was a small price to pay for peace among the group. Rita slowly approached Ves with a warm smile. Ves didn’t protest to the approach, deciding that if the human that fed him could trust this grass blob, then he supposed he could too. Ves let Rita get close and she bumped her head against his as a test. Ves, immobile, merely let out a noise of approval. Lucas breathed out a sigh of relief, for he was worried that the two wouldn’t get along after their slightly violent first encounter.
Watching from where the sand meets the grass was the small Pokemon that followed Lucas and Rita from New Bark Town. The Pokemon was hesitant to step onto the sand and pondered if it was safe to make a move in such open space. The trio sat on the sand with the two Pokemon making noises at each other to communicate, and Lucas watching the tide push and pull the sand of the beach. Rita was happily circling Ves while he responded to her occasional chirp. Lucas fought the temptation to jump into the water by tracing shapes into the sand to occupy his mind for a few minutes while his companions bonded. He doodled a shape reminiscent of a Treecko. Lucas let out a breathy chuckle as he thought about his first and oldest friend. He always did have a love for grass type Pokemon, even in his youth. He thought all the starters were cute, but how could he resist picking the little gecko? He remembered the two grew up together throughout their journey, Lucas learning independence and his friend literally evolving. Sceptile was still at Lucas’s apartment with his roommates and other Pokemon. Lucas missed his friend, but now he had the opportunity to make new ones, and maybe the time will come that they can all meet each other back home.
Luca’s thoughts were interrupted by the sudden silence from Rita and Ves. Lucas looked up and found that Rita was looking towards the area where the sand and dirt begin to mix. She seemed locked onto something past Lucas, so he turned around to follow her red eyes. Meeting her gaze was a Pokemon, a Turtwig to be exact. This Turtwig, however, was different from most. Her coloring was more saturated and she had three leaves on the twig atop her head rather than the usual two. The Turtwig was staring at Rita, Ves, and Lucas and kept her eyes on Lucas, a glimmer of fear was held within. Lucas, not wanting to scare the poor thing, smiled softly and made sure to face her with open arms to show he wasn’t hiding anything. Rita noticed Lucas’s demeanor and mimicked the gesture, sitting and facing the Turtwig with a smile.
The Pokemon decided that she was safe to take a step towards the group and placed her stumps onto the sand. She carefully made her way towards where the man and his companions sat, eyeing the three of them throughout her slow stroll. As she got close, she seemed to gain more confidence as she realized that these new Pokemon and their trainer weren’t going to hurt her. She directed herself towards Lucas, still smiling and clearly peaceful. Lucas watched the Turtwig get close and bump her head against his knee, testing boundaries. Lucas hummed and reached into his pocket, which made the Pokemon tense up before Lucas revealed in his hand a small treat. The man held out the gift and the Turtwig hesitated before eating the treat out of Lucas’s hand. While the Pokemon was chewing, Lucas decided to start some conversation.
“I’m surprised to find a Turtwig outside of Sinnoh. Where did you come from?” he asked. The Turtwig motioned towards the route that connected Cherrygrove and New Bark. “Ah, so did you follow us from New Bark Town? Have you always been there?” The Pokemon shook her head. “Where from?” The Turtwig looked to the ground sadly. “Don’t want to talk about it?” She slowly nodded. “I understand. Don’t fret about it too much then. We all have pasts, and not all of us want to think about them anymore. We have that in common, you and I,” Lucas said to the little turtle. He pat the Pokemon’s head carefully. “So, why have you been following us?” The Turtwig looked from Lucas to Rita and Ves and back to Lucas again with a small cry. Lucas took a second to understand, but eventually asked, “Did you want to come with us? Were you looking for a trainer?” At this, the Turtwig nodded her head vigorously and let out an excited cry. “Would you like me to be your trainer? Is that it?” The Turtwig nearly jumped into Lucas’s lap she was so into the idea. This is what she wanted all her life, this is what she wanted as opposed to the life she led until now.
Lucas laughed as the Turtwig stood on his legs, surprised by how heavy she was compared to her small stature. “Well then, if you’re alright with it, I can use a Pokeball so that it’s official. We’d love to have you on our team. I can tell by looking at you that you’ll be a special addition,” Lucas said, pulling a Pokeball out of his bag and holding it towards the Turtwig. Rita and Vex watched as the Pokemon bopped her head against the Pokeball and a red light enveloped her and took her into the ball. The capture met no resistance and the ball barely shook before stilling. Lucas nearly immediately pressed the button on the ball to let the Turtwig out so he could introduce her properly. When the Pokemon came out of her ball, she happily greeted her new companions, and hopefully one day, family. Lucas held the Turtwig in his arms and she smiled at him.
“Haha, you’ve been so sweet to me ever since you got here,” he said as he pat her head. “Maybe I should call you, Candy? It kinda sounds like a nickname for Evergreen Candytuft, which is an yearlong plant with small white flowers that-“ Rita, Ves, and the Turtwig looked at Lucas with a weird face each, although Ves didn’t emote like the rest. “Ah well, do you think Candy is a nice name?” he asked directly. Candy nodded and gave Lucas a big smile. She loved her name regardless of her trainer’s almost-rambling. She was happier than she had ever been in her life now that she had friends that didn’t look at her funny. Being a variant Turtwig in a different region than the others came with it’s challenges, that’s for sure. But here was someone who understood her in some ways. She was excited for her new life, and the others were excited to have another companion on their journey. Lucas finally decided to get up and dust the sand off his pants from sitting on the beach for so long. Seeing their trainer get up, Rita and Candy got off their spots on the beach and shook of the sand. They then turned to help Ves out of the sand before realizing that they only had stumps for feet and couldn’t help much beyond rolling Ves to the grass. They looked at each other and then at Ves. Ves narrowed his eyes and chittered, signaling for them to hurry up. Rita and Candy went around Ves and started nudging him forward and rolling him across the sand and into the grass.
Lucas watched on as his team made this effort, amused by their creativity. Once the three Pokemon were in the grass, he picked up Ves and started swiping away the sand. Lucas tried his best not to gag as he dug his fingers into the bug’s shell to get out more sand. After the sand was shaken and picked out of everyone, Lucas straightened up and started walking towards the northern entrance to Cherrygrove City, Ves still in his arms to his discomfort, but he didn’t want the poor guy to be rolled around the whole way. Lucas then stopped at the perceived border between the city and the route. He turned around to face the rest of his team.
“Well, I think it’s about time we moved on from here. Lots of places to see and all that. Is everyone alright with that?” he asked, looking down at his Pokemon companions. They all nodded, except Ves who instead made a sound in affirmation. Rita motioned for Lucas to pick her up, to which he obliged and she made her place onto his shoulder. Candy looked a little sad, but then Lucas picked her up and arranged a spot in his bag for her to sit in so she could ride in it, her head sticking out so she could be see and be seen. “Great! To Violet City then!” he said with a grin and a step toward their new destination.
