 At the edge of the southern peninsula in Johto before Azalea Town, the path becomes rugged and difficult to navigate, which is why most travelers trainer or not use the Union Cave to make it to the town just west of it. Union cave is small, but runs deep underground where it meets the ocean below. There are many stagnant water pools and canals where the waters of the ocean have worn away the rock over time, creating a fairway for water type Pokemon to call the cave home. Union Cave is a popular spot for up and coming trainers looking to test their mettle before coming to Azalea for their next gym challenge, so it is not uncommon to run into a trainer or two on your way through.

Breaking through the forest's edge, Julian came across something he hadn't expected to see. Sure he knew the direction of the town, but he had never been there. He didn't realize that to get there, he was going to have to go through a cave. There was a sign near the mouth of the cave, Julian approached and read it. 'Union Cave'. Well, the path going around the cave looked dangerous, so he knew his best bet was to go through the cave. With a breath to steady himself, he entered the cave with his two companions right behind. Hoothoot was recalled into his Pokeball and Cyndaquil was needed now more than ever to light the way.

The further into the cave he went, the stranger his surroundings became. He knew, through the steady downward incline, that this cave system went far beneath the surface. There were strange pools of water that lead him to believe they were connected to something. There were occasional splashes that told him there were Pokemon in the water. He hadn't come across any Water-Type Pokemon, other than Whooper. It was a good opportunity to catch some. The problem was, he didn't know what was in there.

Julian stared intently into the water. It was a challenge for sure, to be overcome. All challenges had a solution to be found. Umbreon nudged his hand, and Julian glanced down. Umbreon was looking behind them, so Julian looked the same way. A kid was standing there talking. '... Pokemon battle.' Julian just caught the hind-end of whatever this kid was saying. He could figure out, however, what this kid was after. Julian nodded his head.

Since the random stranger had issued the challenge, Julian let him send out his Pokemon first. It was too dark for him to read the challenger's lips, which would make this more challenging. He couldn't predict and counter the attacks well. When the stranger sent out his Pokemon, Julian saw a Ledyba. The ladybug was always an appealing Pokemon to Julian, he found them to be quite adorable. In his experience, however, Grass and Bug types weren't very powerful. That's why he tended to avoid catching them. Alright then, now that Julian knew what he was up again he could begin his planning.
Hoothoot once again found himself facing an enemy. Ledyba was much faster than Julian gave him credit for. It zipped after the owl, punching him twice before Hoothoot could, in a panic, use Hypnosis (-30, 40/70). Knowing what a game change the owl's Hypnosis was, Julian ordered Hoothoot to use Peck (-40, 130/170). Before Hoothoot could give the enemy a chance to wake up, Julian recalled him into the Pokeball. He sent out Cyndaquil, expecting the Fire-Type to burn the bug up. Instead, Cyndaquil ran at the bug with electricity crackling all around his body. The impact left the bug flying through the air and into the Trainer's arms. He recalled the bug, glaring at Julian. He approached. 'What kind of game are you playing at? Your Fire-Type Pokemon just used an Electric attack. That's cheating.'
Julian wasn't sure where the Fire-Mouse learned the attack, but he knew it wasn't cheating. If a Pokemon could learn a move, it was fair game. The kid grabbed Julian's shirt in a threatening manner, but backed off when Umbreon and Espeon looked like they were ready to attack. 'This isn't over. We'll meet again.'

Now on top of thinking of a way to get at the Water-Types, Julian got to think about how strange that kid was. He seemed to take the loss as a personal insult. Sure his Ledyba seemed strong, but you can't expect to win every battle you fight. He was a new Trainer and he knew better than that. He used Potions to fully heal Hoothoot and Cyndaquil. Apparently that Electric-Type attack had a recoil from Hell because Cyndaquil had nearly fainted after using it.

Suddenly, Julian had an idea. He didn't have a fishing rod, so the only way he could get a Water Pokemon out of the water was by sending Whooper in to fetch them. He called out Whooper, pointing to the water. He had Hoothoot and Cyndaquil standing nearby, ready to attack with the same strategy they used on the Trainer. Whooper jumped into the water without hesitation, seeming to enjoy the cold waves. Little did Julian know, that Whooper actually preferred and even loved cold water.

Unfortunately, Julian realized his mistake when Whooper jumped out of the water, landing at the edge and shaking itself off. Whooper didn't understand to fetch the Water-Type Pokemon, just thought to play in it. Julian signed, pulling out his Pokeball to return him. Before he did, however, he saw something out of the corner of his eye. A Sandshrew! He approached the wild Pokemon, which watched him. Julian couldn't tell what the Pokemon was going to do, but was surprised when Sandshrew attacked. It lunged for Julian's face, but was caught mid-air by a blast of mud shot from Whooper (-45, 25/70). Sandshrew was thrown into another pool of water.
Neither Julian nor Whooper knew what to do. They were both worried they'd just killed the Ground-Type. Everyone knew they didn't do so well in water. Whooper dived in, thinking to save the Pokemon. It looked around, able to see clearly in the dark water. Spotting Sandshrew nearby, holding it's breath and waiting for him. When he approached the wild Pokemon to help it, Sandshrew attacked with Scratch (-30, 40/70). A second Mud Shot quickly fainted the Pokemon. Returning to the surface with Sandshrew in tow, Julian took the Sandshrew from Whooper, pulling both out of the water.

The trip through was almost peaceful were it not for Loki and Calcifer's constant chatter and bickering, or really only one sided bickering. Elfana Aroway Why was everything in this Arceus forsaken region separated by a cave?! Union Cave was mercifully small but that didn't make it any better. It was still a cave and she wanted nothing to do with it. This time she didn't even try to navigate through the cave. She grabbed on to Walter's arm and waited...aaaaand waited. Elfana blinked then glanced at the Alakazam when they didn't instantly appear in the next town. "At least say please." Walter patted her head to the best of his ability. She pouted for a couple seconds before sighing. She was being rude. Being in a poor mood because she slept in and didn't feel like going through the cave wasn't a good excuse to expect Walter to Teleport her the second she decided she was over walking. She was supposed to be trying to figure out how to person. This was good practice. "Could you please teleport us to the next city, Walter?" She asked quietly while the Turtwig resting in her free arm clapped his little feet together. His trainer was being nice! Walter grinned and nodded. "Of course." Elfana Aroway Elfana waited patiently for Walter to Teleport her to the next town. She cradled Pantalaimon against her chest, staring at the entrance to the cave like it was some sort of diseased thing. If some sort of undead monstrosity crawled up from the depths of hell and her only escape route was the cave, she would take her chances with the monster. Pantalaimon nuzzled her chest, making her smile a bit. Okay...maybe she would deal with the cave- but only because she liked her Turtwig. Walter grabbing her arm snapped her out of her daydream. A moment later, the little group vanished. When they reappeared they were...not in Violet City. She looked back at the cave then at Walter. Had he gotten lost? "We originally came here for the ruins, right?" He gestured towards the ruins a little ways away from them. They had originally gone to Johto for the Ruins. She considered it then nodded. Getting sidetracked for a bit couldn't hurt anything.

The Bayleef and Latios look around as the light began to fade from the entrance. " Ikara! Come out and help light the path!" Skylar said as he summoned the Ponyta. Skylar didnt want to risk Sakura getting hurt so he had her returned. He tried to get Ikara and Spectro's into their Pokeballs. But Ikara suggested she stay out so she can keep things lit up. Spectro teased that he needed to stay out so Skylar wouldn't get into any trouble. " Fine, Fine" He laughed but told them to stay behind him as he got his Luxury Ball out and ready. As they traveled deeper they could hear a voice nearby. " Now, Keep it there so it can't escape!" The voice said as Skylar ran up. What he saw was a strange Pokemon whom he'd never seen and a trainer who was with a Sneasel. " Hey What are you doing!" Skylar shouted. He noticed that there was some iced rocks on the Pokemon's wings to keep it from escaping. " None of your business Kid, now scram." Skylar glared and ran in between the Pokemon and the trainer. The blasts from the powerful water attacks left the Sneasel out cold. This caused the trainer to back up after returning their Pokemon. " GAH You will pay for this!!!" His outburst left the echo running through the cave as he ran off. As Skylar returned his Pokemon he noticed a glowing light coming from behind him. He turned to look down at the trapped Pokemon. The once black markings were now glowing Purple. Skylar didn't think much of it and had his Ponyta help melt the ice and with a few powerful kicks from the Ponyta. She was able to use her strong hooves to break down the rocks to be moved. " You ok?" Skylar asked as he knelt down to the Pokemon. The Pokemon tried to fold its wings but winced in pain. " That's not good... Ok! Spectro I hate to ask this but with the injured wings and bruised legs, you will have to help carry the Pokemon to the Pokemon Center." Skylar's Kindness was truly showing. As he helped the Pokemon onto the back of the Eon Pokemon, she finally spoke up. " Galliga..." Skylar turned a bit shocked as he looked to the Pokemon. " Huh?" The Pokemon spoke once more. " I am... Galliga." It seems Spectro's ability was really coming in handy. For now they continued onto get out of this cave. Eventually the small squad eventually found a light at the end of the cave. Thus they picked up a quicker pace to get out. Upon getting out of the cave, it wasnt much further until they reached Azalea Town. The Pokemon the Latios was carrying caught some attention of the locals. Apparently the Shiny Latios wasnt enough. It didn’t take long for Lirio, Amber, and Monk Konoha to get ready at the Pokemon Center and head out towards Union Cave. They reached the mouth of the cave before dusk, with plenty of sunlight still left. They had stopped for a moment at the mouth of the cave to double-check their belongings and make sure they were ready to travel through it that day. “Wow, we haven’t traveled much, but I am still so excited to be out of the city for the first time in a while! The air out here is so refreshing!” “I love the way the air smells around here! The city certainly has a different scent to it. Unfortunately, unless I haven’t been in Azalea Town recently or the nearby area, I can’t notice the pleasant smell of the air,” Lirio said. “The air here is even fresher than that of the woods surrounding Sprout Tower. Amber, Lirio, and Monk Konoha walked through the cave together. The cave was surprisingly well lit by light that had reflected into the insides of the cave from the many pools of water in it. Lirio could tell Amber was a bit nervous, though, possibly afraid of the mostly-dark surroundings. “You know, Amber, I find the cave to be quite beautiful. You should try to focus on that instead of being so nervous about what may jump out at us,” Lirio said, trying to make her feel better. “Psh, me? Afraid? Never! I am as unafraid as they get! Nothing is really going to pop out at us though, right?” Amber replied, trying to act brave but saying the last part timidly. “Well, there are many Pokemon like Zubat that live in this cave. They may get startled by our movements and act rashly,” Monk Konoha replied matter-of-factly, having fun teasing Amber. “Really?! Oh gosh! I don’t like the idea of that!” “Well, theoretically, the chances of that aren’t that high,” Monk Konoha added feeling a bit bad about what she said earlier. “What was that noise?” Lirio interjected. “What noise?!” “I was just joking around about Pokemon jumping out at us…” Monk Konoha admitted, unsure if Lirio was joking or not. “I am serious. Just listen.” The three of them fell quiet and listened for a sound. As Lirio said, there was sound after all. A soft rumble at first that got louder very quickly. Suddenly, something large escaped from the wall several yards in front of them and flopped onto the ground. “GAH!” Amber screamed out loud of utter fear, startling both Lirio and Monk Konoha more than whatever just popped out of the ground. It was hard to see what was in front of them, but once the dust settled, the three of them saw a worm-like figure in front of them. It was hard for them to tell with the dust that was now in the air, but after it settled a bit, they could tell it was an Onix that appeared to be struggling. “It looks like an Onix, but it seems like it is in trouble. We should try to help it cautiously. They are rather heavy Pokemon,” Monk Konoha said, warning the other two. “That was not a shriek of fear, but of, um, excitement! I was so excited to see an Onix jump out of the ground!” Amber said, trying to reassure everyone before taking out a Pokeball. “Dusk, give us a little more light!” Out of the Pokeball, Amber’s Houndour came out and created a large flame in its mouth that lit up the cave a bit. With the new light, the group could see that the Onix was not only ensnared a bit by wires but also was a shiny Onix. “We need to try to get these wires off of it! Amaryllis, can you help me out?” Lirio said as he sent out his Pokemon and hurried towards the struggling Onix. Amber, Dusk, and Monk Konoha followed behind them. The Onix noticed all of them going towards it and let out a sharp screech to dissuade their approach. All of them stopped. Lirio raised his hands up and continued to walk slowly towards it. “We aren’t here to hurt you. We want to try to help get those coils off of you,” Lirio said calmly to it. “Be careful, Lirio. Hurt Pokemon act unpredictably!” Monk Konoha warned, readying a Pokeball of her own. The Onix seemed to understand Lirio and calmed somewhat, allowing him to near its side where the coils wrapped around it. “Good. Now, Amaryllis, use your leaf to cut the wires off the Onix.” Amaryllis nodded and quickly cut off the wires. The Onix got up and stretched a bit before appearing to thank Lirio and Amaryllis with a nod. Lirio patted it gently, but their moment of appreciation was cut short. Some voices began to come from the tunnel made by Onix. The Onix quickly turned towards the tunnel and screeched loudly again before it dug itself away.

After recovering from the sound of Onix’s screech, Amber, Monk Konoha, and Dusk caught up to Lirio. The entire group looked at the first tunnel made by the Onix from which the voices were coming from. “We should have caught up to it by now!” Said a deep, gruff voice. “I am telling you, it went this way! There should be an opening up ahead that should have slowed it down a bit! Just keep going!” A feminine, high pitched voice said after. “You two bickering probably scared it in a different direction!” Said a masculine voice sharply that was not as deep as the first. Amber, Lirio, and Monk Konoha weren’t sure what to do nor had much time to think as the voices were getting louder and closer. They all looked at each other and nodded as they prepared themselves to face whoever came out of the tunnel, as if they were all thinking the same thing. It didn’t take long for the source of the three voices to show themselves from the tunnel. They jumped out of the tunnel and into the open space Lirio and company were in, just a few yards from where they stood. The sources of the first two voices were still bickering too much to notice Lirio and the others. The third, smaller guy stopped the first two, a tall, thin woman and shorter but well-built man. “Hey, there are other people here!” He said. “Wait, where?!” The muscular man said. The woman smacked his head and said as if she had seen the others this entire time, “Right there, you fool!” At this point, all three of them were looking right at Lirio, Amber, Monk Konoha, and their Pokemon. Lirio was the first to address them, “Were you all the ones that snared that Onix?” “Ha! Well of course we did! We were trying to catch that rare, shiny Onix!” Replied the muscular man, boasting. Once again, the tall woman smacked his head. “Why would you tell them that?! Now they know that we’re trying to poach that Pokemon!” “Actually, Reina, I think now they know what we were doing…” The smaller man said clearly annoyed at the other two. “Why would you all do such a thing? Pokemon are friends and shouldn’t be treated so horribly!” Amber said, unable to understand how people could do something cruel like this. “Well, now the cat is out of the bag, I guess we can tell you because it makes money! And who doesn’t like money?” Reina replied. “I know I do!” The built man added. “Now, if you all would get out of our way, we will continue to track down that Onix you all must have seen go through here!” Reina said, beginning to strut in the direction of the second tunnel the Onix had made. “Reina, wait, the snare on the Onix has been cut and is laying on the ground now. I suspect these individuals had something to deal with it,” The smaller man said as he attempted to stop her. “Winston, can’t you use your observation skills to point out some good news for once?” Reina said as she stopped in her tracks. “I suppose that means we have to teach these guys a lesson for meddling in our affairs, right Reina and Colby?” “Oh! I like that suggestion! Let’s do it, Reina! Can we?” “Fine, but if we don’t bring back that Onix to the boss, we will be trouble. But, I suppose we can’t have some fun along the way!” Reina responded turning towards Lirio’s group with a sly smile on her face. “Lirio, Amber, I am afraid we may have to battle these individuals. Who knows what Pokemon they have. Be prepared! I suggest we each take on one of them. I’ll fight the short man that appears to be called Winston. Lirio, you can take on Reina, their apparent leader. Amber, you can fight Colby.” “Got it!” Amber and Lirio said simultaneously.

“Go, Sandile!” Reina said aloud, throwing a Pokeball towards Lirio. “Go, Sneasel!” Colby said, also throwing out a Pokeball. “Go, Inkay!” Watson said, throwing his Pokeball. “Sunflora, I need your help!” Monk Konoha said, revealing her Pokemon from its Pokeball. “Sneasel, u-” Colby began but was interrupted by Amber. “Ember, Houndour!” Amber shouted over Colby. “Hey, uh, wait!” Colby said, caught off guard by Amber’s brash command. The single attack nearly knocked out Colby’s Sneasel in one hit. “Sandile, use bite on that Bayleef!” Reina commanded. The sand alligator Pokemon was gnawing on Amaryllis’ leg. “Throw it off and use Razor Leaf, Amaryllis!” Lirio yelled out. Amaryllis did as commanded, sending the Sandile backward from the initial throw and the follow-up attack. “Sol, let’s give our friends a bit more strength, use Sunny Day!” Monk Konoha called out. Her Sunflora began to glow before emitting an orb of light from its head that lit the cave brightly, like a small sun. “Inkay, Pluck off some of their sunny disposition!” Watson commanded. Reina and Colby were both looking at their dazed Pokemon for a moment. “Get up! I hoped you were worth something when I stole you. I guess not...” Colby berated his Pokemon Watson’s Inkay attacked Monk Konoha’s Sunflora with a super effective Pluck attack. Reina commanded her Sandile once more, “These people are tougher than we thought. Use Bite once more, Sandile!” Colby looked down at his Sneasel, which struggled to get up. “Just try to do anything useful!” “Dusk, use Ember again!” “Amaryllis, stop Sandile with another Razor Leaf attack!” “Restore your strength with Giga Drain, Sol!” Colby’s Sneasel attempted to dodge the Ember that was strengthened by Sunny Day, but was unable to and was knocked out. Amaryllis managed to attack Sandile just as it was about to bite her, sending the Pokemon flying back towards Reina, knocked out as well. Watson’s Inkay was able to endure the hit, but both the Inkay and Watson seemed concerned when they realized the fight was now three against one. Colby scowled at his Sneasel, “Weak…” Reina lost her composure for a brief moment and let the panic show on her face. “Kanan, help us blow this smoke away with Silver Wind!” Lirio said, releasing his Pokemon while trying not to breathe in much of the smoke. Kanan cleared the smoke quickly, but the three Pokemon poachers were quick and had already gotten away. “Is everyone okay?” Monk Konoha asked. “Uh, yes, but it seems Dusk is doing more than okay. Great, actually! He, um, seemed to have evolved into a Houndoom under the cover of the smoke!” Amber said as her now-Houndoom Dusk nuzzled against her side. “Wow! That is amazing!” “We should probably get out of here soon. We lost more time than I would have liked with that encounter. Lirio, can you send out your Litwick to help Dusk light the cave for us?” Monk Konoha pointed out and suggested. “Of course! Ignis, would you shine some light for us?” Ignis happily popped out of his Pokeball and lit his flame a bit brighter than usual. Dusk also produced a flame in his mouth as he had done earlier. The two flames combined lit the cave quite well. Against one of the walls of the cave, however, Lirio noticed that Colby’s Sneasel was still there, knocked out, and pointed this out to the others. “We should help the Sneasel. It would be wrong to leave it in here in its condition…” “You are are right, Lirio. I have a revival herb I packed with me that we can use to heal it up along with some other fruit and herbs I brought,” Monk Konoha said, quickly beginning to get to work. While Lirio and Monk Konoha tended to the Sneasel’s wounds, Amber was unsure what to do with herself. “I’ll just, uh, make sure those bad guys don’t come back.”
