 "Between Rugged Mountains."
Pewter City is a city located in northwest Kanto. The locale lies between Viridian Forest and Mt. Moon. The most notable resident of the city is Brock, the Pewter City Gym Leader. A famous museum is located in the northwestern part of Pewter City and is one of the city's main attractions. The main building is open to the public and features several historical artifacts, including Aerodactyl and Kabutops Fossils, and a model of a space shuttle. There are two floors to explore in the Pewter Museum of Science. The first floor holds the front desk and a Fossil exhibit containing the Fossils of Aerodactyl and Kabutops. The second floor hosts a space exhibit featuring a Space Shuttle and a large Moon Stone that fell onto Mt. Moon.
{Pewter City Gym (Click)} Brock is the official Pewter City's Gym Leader. He gives out the Boulder Badge to trainers who defeat him in battle. He is known as "The Rock-solid Pokemon Trainer!" Brock is a very serious and professional Pokémon Trainer, and many people respect and admire him. He is very proud of his rock-hard willpower, and uses Rock-type Pokémon to complement this. He rarely laughs or drops his serious demeanor, but when he does, he finds it hard to stop. When he isn't in his gym battling, he can be found digging for fossils in Mt. Moon, and because of this, he has one of the largest fossil collection in Kanto. In his free time, he also has been looking into becoming a Pokemon Breeder. His gym is exactly what you would expect it to be. On the outside, it looks like a dome completely coated in smooth boulders, and rocks. Once inside the heavy metal doors, the gym is just as rocky as it's exterior. The stadium is a large open area with a very tall ceiling, but those are this gym's only luxury for it's not friendly to all types. The arena's floor is made of hard rocks, and it's full of cracks, craters, as well as a few rocky ridges now jet out from the ground, all from many attacks in the past. Not only that, but craters liter the walls and ceiling as well. He may be the first gym leader to battle, but he is not going to be an easy opponent to beat. On each sides of the arena are raised platforms for Brock and his opponent to stand and have a birds eye view of the battle. Now that she had a reason to leave Viridian Forest, she directed her small party towards the exit. She needed to find a Pokemon Center, and to heal her new Pikachu. "Hello." She waved off the determined battle request of a Bug Catcher. "No, no. My Pokemon need to be healed." She excused herself and left the Forest behind her.
The almost-familiar Pewter City rose up to meet her view. She had spent only two days setting up her room before setting off to begin her Journey and claim a Starter Pokemon, but she hadn't had the chance to get out and 'meet the neighbors'. She made a beeline to the Pokemon Center. The double-doors slid apart, and a blast of air-conditioned cool air hit her in the face. "Hello, Nurse Joy." She waved politely as she approached the Woman with pink hair. "Could you heal my Pikachu, please?"
"Sure thing, please place your Pikachu's Pokeball on the tray." The Nurse smiled and indicated the tray she held in her hands. Kira pulled the Pokeball out of her bag, setting it in the semi-circle indent on the tray. "Please wait while we heal your Pokemon." So, Kayla took a seat next to Lucy. She reached into her bag, pulling out the last sandwich she had. She pulled it into halves and shared the food with Lucy. She knew she'd have to talk her Mother about more food when she went home to visit.

Almost an hour later, Nurse Joy approached where they had been sitting. Kira's head lolled against her shoulder, she had fallen asleep some time during the wait, but she woke surprised when Lucy nudged her shoulder. "Hmm?" She rubbed her eyes, looking up at the Nurse. "Oh, my Pikachu!" She spoke in excitement.
"Yes, your Pikachu is looking bright and chipper." Nurse Joy spoke with a happy tone. "Take care now." Kira took Pikachu's Pokeball from the tray, returning it to her bag and pulling the bag's strap over her shoulder.
"Ready, Lucy?" Kira was nervous to return home so quickly, especially without a single badge to show for the time she'd been away. Kira holds the door open for her Riolu, waving farewell to Nurse Joy. She had to block the sunlight with her arm while her eyes adjusted to the bright light and warmth of the evening sun. Her Family's new home was just a few buildings away. The walk seemed to pass in the blink of an eye, and before she knew it she was opening the front door. "Mom? Dad?" She called out.
"Kye?" Her Mother's voice came from the living room. Kira stood past the doorway, letting Lucy past before closing the door behind them. "We're in here." Her Mother rose to her feet as Kira entered the living room. "Come in, take a seat. I'll make some food." She rushed off to the kitchen, and Kira took a seat beside her little Sister.
"What Pokemon have you caught?!" Her Sister asked impatiently, with an excited look. She smiled as she released Charmander, Pikachu, and Drifloon from their Pokeballs. "Cute!" She nearly yelled out as she pulled Pikachu into a hug. The Pikachu seemed content to let the child hug him.
"Drifloon, and Shiny at that. That's a rare Pokemon around here." Her Father spoke up from his reclining chair. "I would have thought you'd pick Bulbasaur." He grinned, teasing his Daughter. She got out of her seat and moved over to give her Father a hug.

The audible 'ding' of the stove's timer told Kira that the food was done. She knew that her family preferred to eat in the living room, but she went into the kitchen to help carry in the plates. "Pizza is ready." She called out with a smile, there wasn't a single disappointed face on any of her family members. Pizza had been popular where they lived before. Hell, anything warm was considered good in the frozen town. Kayla bit into the melting cheese, and it was delicious.
"I was saving this pizza until you get home, but we weren't expecting you back so soon. Didn't you have another Gym Battle along the way?" Her Mother meant well, but it was an awkward conversation.
She hesitated, taking another bite of pizza to ponder her Mother's question. "Actually, no. The Gym Leader there is stronger than the other Gym Leaders, I was told to start here in Pewter City. It's Brock, right?" Her Father had mentioned the name once during the move.
"Yep, Rock-Type Leader. I hope you have a plan for his Pokemon." Kira fell into silence again, nodding once in answer. Still, if the plan failed then she needed a back-up. Sometimes you couldn't always assume that your ideas will pan out. "I hope so, he's supposedly pretty challenging for new Trainers. We'll go to root you on, if you want?"
Looking up to her Father, she gave a nervous smile. "I... I don't think that will be necessary." Her Family could be overbearing at times, and she couldn't allow herself to be distracted during the Battle.

"No, Mom. I don't need to take any sandwiches with me." She called back to her Mother. It wasn't like she was skipping Town. "I'm just going to battle the Gym." Kayla adopted her usual determined demeanor as she rounded the corner of her house, passed the Pokemon Center, and turned around the back of the Gym. Riolu hadn't realized her Trainer had stopped for a few seconds, but hurried back to her side once Lucy had looked behind her.
"What's wrong, why did we stop?" Suddenly, she hesitated. The warnings of her Family, of the passing Trainers had made her a bit nervous. Just how powerful were his Pokemon? She wasn't sure that she was ready for this yet.
"I think... I think we need to train some more, before we try." Lucy seemed surprised, Kira had been ready to face this Gym Leader only minutes before, but now she was nervous. Instead of voicing her thoughts, Lucy merely nodded and took her Trainer's hand. "Thank you for understanding." The two walked away, towards the center of Town. "We could do some training, I'm sure there are some wild Pokemon around here somewhere."

As she walked, she tried to think of who she should be training the most. She knew that Charmander wouldn't last very long, but she didn't want to subject Riolu to fainting when they had come so far on their friendship. Pikachu's electricity and Drifloon's Gust wouldn't work either, so it came down to taking the risk. "We're going to focus our training on you." She spoke to Lucy, looking at her, while still in thought.
Lucy nodded, knowing the risks of facing such a powerful Opponent. "If I can learn another Fighting-Type move, then we could win." Lucy's voice entered Kira's mind.
"I know, but you still aren't strong enough yet." Still, she thought through her options. "I suggest we find a couple more wild Pokemon, and then give you a couple of those candies so you're ready for the extra training." Kayla didn't want to use the candies, as she wanted to train her Pokemon as best she could.

The sound of a nearby wild Pokemon reached her ears, and she paused her thinking. "That's not a voice I recognize, you?" She glanced down to Lucy, who shook her head no. "Race you there." Suddenly it was a game, and the two were competing to see who would find the new Pokemon first. They looked, and looked, but they still couldn't find the source of the noise they had heard before. "Where could it be?" She was getting frustrated, and yet she was even more determined to find the Pokemon.

Finally the Pokemon revealed itself. Sandshrew had been hidden behind a rock, but stepped out and ed it's head to the side, watching the Trainer and her Pokemon curiously.
"Alright, Charmander. You're up first." She threw the Pokeball, releasing Charmander in glowing energy. Sandslash attacked first, using Fury Cutter. It wasn't very effective, so it dealt 5 points of damage. Charmander countered with an Ember, dealing 30 damage and burning Sandshrew. Sandshrew took an additional 10 points of damage due to the burn.
Sandshrew doubled it's attack with another Fury Cutter, dealing 10 points of damage. "Again, use Ember!" She called out, and Charmander sent another fire attack towards the Sandshrew for 30 damage, followed by the 10 from being burned.
Again, Sandshrew doubled the attack, this Fury Cutter dealing 20 points of damage. Charmander was feeling it now, barely able to stand. "One more time, this should do it!" She grinned. Charmander used Ember one last time, dealing 30 points of damage and causing the Wild Pokemon to faint.
She threw an empty Pokeball, which pulled Sandshrew inside of it. The Pokeball sealed after shaking three times, effectively capturing the Sandshrew. "Yes!" She jumped up, hands in the air. "We caught Sandshrew!" She hugged Charmander. "Let's go visit the Pokemon Center."

Again, the refreshing cool air hit Kira in the face as the double doors slid aside to let her in. "Hello, Nurse Joy. It's me again, I was wondering if you could heal my Charmander and Sandshrew."
"Of course, please place their Pokeballs on the tray." This time, it was her Chansey that held the tray, as she was fixing the bandage on a Trainer's Ratatta. Kira placed both Pokeballs on the tray's semi-circle indents. "Please wait, while we heal your Pokemon." Finishing the bandage, Nurse Joy and Chansey took Kira's Pokeballs to the back.
Kira and Lucy took the same seat they had chosen the last time they were here, and it took another hour before Nurse Joy returned with her Pokemon. "Your Pokemon are looking well, take care now." She said with a bright smile.
"Thank you, Nurse Joy." She returned the Pokeballs to her bag, and the two returned to the evening light of Pewter City.

Leaving the Pokemon Center, Kayla and Lucy were stopped by the appearance of a teenager dressed in black, a red R logo emblazoned across the chest of his shirt. "Stop right there. You look weak, I should be able to beat you and steal your Pokemon easily." He grinned darkly and threateningly. "Come on out, Magnemite!" He yelled, throwing a Pokeball into the air.
"Steal my Pokemon?" Her eyes narrowed angrily, and Riolu took a fighting stance. "I don't think so." She stared down the single, unblinking eye of the Magnemite. "You're an Electric-Type Pokemon. In that case..." She trailed off, throwing her own Pokeball into the air. The red energy solidified into Sandshrew.
The Team Rocket Grunt seemed surprised to see a Ground-Type Pokemon, and must have realized that electric attacks wouldn't work. "Alright then, use Tackle!" Magnemite flew forward, slamming into Sandshrew and dealing 20 damage. Sandshrew barely seemed to notice the attack.
"Counter the attack with Rollout!" Kira called, and Sandshrew rolled a large stone at Magnemite. The attack did double damage, hitting for 20 points.
He was getting angry. "I won't let you beat us! Use Tackle again!" Magnemite tackled Sandshrew a second time, dealing another 20 damage. Sandshrew used Rollout a second time in succession, hitting Magnemite with double damage for 40 points.
"We haven't lost, use Tackle!" Again, Magnemite dealt 20 points of damage to Sandshrew. One final time, Sandshrew used Rollout and dealing double-damage worth 80 Hp. Magnemite fainted, and Kira stood in front of her Pokemon.
"Don't even think about it, you'd better leave." Riolu stood beside her Trainer, willing to fight to protect Kira's team.

The stranger looked as if he wanted to stay, and make the young girl pay for defeating him and his Magnemite. "I... This isn't over." He glared at her, before turning and running back towards Viridian Forest.
"That was actually kind of fun." Kira breathed a sigh of relief, grinning at Riolu. "What do you think, Lucy? He wasn't so tough." She brushed off the encounter. Instead of waiting longer to heal her Pokemon in the Center again, she gave Sandshrew enough potions to fully restore his Hp. "You have a nice rest. You deserve it." She smiled as she pulled Sandshrew back into his Pokeball. Lucy didn't look as calm about the matter as her Trainer did, she didn't like that there were Pokemon thieves in this Region.

"Kira, I'm glad I caught you before you battled Brock!" Her Mother's voice called as she rounded the corner. "I forgot to tell you that your little-friend wrote back."
She hadn't expected a response so quickly. She wondered if he had agreed to accompanying her. If so, she wouldn't go any further than Pewter City until he caught up. Kira took the letter from her Mother, and noticed that it was unopened. "You didn't read it?" Slipping a finger into the paper, she tore it open and pulled out the parchment.
"No, you are growing up. You're starting your Pokemon Journey, I can't baby you forever." Mrs. Williams watched as her Daughter unfolded the delicately written letter, reading it carefully.
Her face lit up with excitement. "He said yes!" She exclaimed after reading it three times, just to be sure. "He should be here..." She looked at the date one last time. "...he's supposed to be here in the next couple of days." She was impatient, and didn't want to wait that long, but she would. "Thanks Mom. Oh, I caught a Sandshrew!" Her face lit up again.
"That's great, Dear!" Her Mother shared the enthusiasm, but had to hurry back home... something about her Sister not behaving.

"What now?" Riolu's feminine voice sounded inside of Kira's mind. "We can train, we can battle the Gym Leader, we can look through the Museum." Lucy was throwing out options, but Kira wasn't too sure what she wanted to do.
She smiled down at her Pokemon. "Well, I still think we need to train more before facing Brock, but we could Train or explore the Pewter City Museum." Lucy and Kira had both been excited for the Museum, Space had always been an interesting topic for the Trainer. It was one of the things that helped to make the move easier to accept.
If it hadn't been for the letter, and the Team Rocket Grunt, the evening may have passed without anything super-interesting happening. "One more battle before we go home, it's getting dark." She suddenly decided that they would face the Pewter City Gym, and therefore the Gym Leader, tomorrow morning.

The pair searched for another Pokemon for a while, the sun was beginning to set. Unfortunately, Pokemon weren't as common in the City as they were in the Forest, so it took them longer than expected to find. "I am not having any luck." Kira spoke audibly to Lucy. "What about you?"
Riolu heard the sound before Kira did, and she turned the corner of a house in search of it's source. "Over here." The voice was back in Kira's mind, catching her off guard. She didn't even realize Riolu had left her side, but she hurried after her Pokemon and friend in search of the next challenge.

This was a Pokemon that Kira was familiar with. Lucy had come across a Ratatta, a small, purple rat-like Pokemon. "Alright Lucy, this is all you." Lucy smirked, glad to have the chance to battle again.
Ratatta rushed forward in the blink of an eye, slamming into Riolu with a Quick Attack, dealing 30 damage. "Use it's attack to Counter!" Riolu turned sharply, sending a powerful kick for double damage, dealing 120 damage at the Ratatta. The Wild-Pokemon fainted hard. "That's how we do it!" She grinned, giving Riolu a Potion. "That was an impressive Counter!" She hugged Lucy tight.

Having beaten the Ratatta, they both agreed that it was too dark to keep training. So, they returned home. Her Mother was upstairs giving her Sister a bath, and her Father must have had a long day at work because he was passed out on the couch.So, she lead Lucy up to their room. "Remember what I was talking about earlier?" She asked, with a smile. "Let's try out those Candies." She pulled three of them out of her bag. "Here, eat these."
Three certainly was a lot to level up at once, but Kira believed that Lucy was ready for it. "Alright." Lucy's comforting voice replied in Kira's mind. She ate all three candies, one at a time, and growing three levels. "Oh wow! I feel much stronger!" Inspiration hit. She sent out a strike. Despite not actually touching it, Kira's lamp shattered.
"Woah!" They both spoke in unison; Kira out loud and Lucy in Kira's mind. "That was Force Palm!" Kira had been studying up on the different moves that Riolu could learn in anticipation.

The next morning, Kira woke Lucy and the pair were ready to face the challenges of their day. Something was different this time, there was a serious determination in Kira's eyes. "This is it, Lucy." Kira wasn't smiling as she put her shoes on. "Today is the day."
Trainer and Pokemon once more set out towards the Pewter City Gym, this time they made a game out of it. They raced each other to the front doors. Kira knocked on the heavy double-doors, waiting for a response. Slowly, the doors began to open and reveal a high-celing, and a rocky Pokemon Battle-Arena.
"If you are a challenger, take your place in the stand at the opposite end." The voice was young. When Kira found the source of the voice, she was surprised. She had been expecting Brock, but a Child stood in the stand. "I am Liam, and you're a long way from facing Brock. You'll have to go through me first!"
"Fine by me, if you want to get beaten so badly." She grinned, climbing into the platform across the arena. Liam chose first, sending out a Sandshrew. "I have one of those." She spoke with interest. "What's that..?" He asked in confusion, apparently he had never seen a Riolu before. "It doesn't matter! Sandshrew, use..."
"Force-Palm." Kira cut him off, and before Sandshrew could move, Lucy hit hard, dealing 50 damage.
"No!" He exclaimed. "Use Scratch!" He called out, and Sandshrew countered with 30 points of damage to Lucy's Hp.
"Alright then, let's finish it off with Force Palm!" Lucy struck with the second attack, dealing another 50 points of damage and causing Liam's Sandshrew to faint. "Good job." She smiled at her Pokemon as Lucy jumped back into the stand. "Here." Kira gave Lucy two Potions to restore the lost Hp.

Kira had been thinking for days on a systematic way to win against Ground/Rock-Type Pokemon, and she believed she had a way to win. "Call your Leader, tell him I'm ready for a fight!" Kira was sassy now, sassy and determined. "Lucy, I want you to hold back alright?" Riolu only nodded as Kira pulled out a Pokeball and threw into the air. It spiraled before opening, releasing Sandshrew, who was ready for a fight.
Riolu looked up curiously at the Trainer. "Sandshrew?" She questioned into Kira's mind. Kira grinned down at her Pokemon and simply nodded. Then she looked around, wondering when the Gym Leader would take his place and take her challenge.

Leader BrockLiam let out a huff as he returned his little armadillo. Liam looked at the young girl clearly upset at his loss. "Okay fine. You got through me fair and square. Let me go get Brock." he told the girl that was about his age. It was clear that he wasn't happy about losing, but he was trying to be a good sport about it, even with her sass. He began to climb back down the platform and began to walk back across the room and to a door at the far end. He opened the door, and stuck his head inside. After a moment of talking, Liam opened the door further, and Brock stepped out into the main of the Gym. He was happy to see the young girl challenging him, it had been really slow lately, and she seemed like she would make a decent challenger, despite her young age. Brock began up the platform and gave the girl a smile. "Hello, I'm Brock, and I'm looking forward to getting to battle with you." He said, introducing himself. He reached into his pocket and let out his first Pokemon. Geodude. The Geode let out a grunt as he flexed his rocky muscles. "You've proven yourself as a challenger, but I won't be as easy as Liam." He warned her with a small grin, to which Liam pouted on the side lines. Liam crossed his arms and began out of the gym to go heal his Pokemon. Brock looked the girl's Pokemon over, she had a Riolu and a Sandshrew. She and an interesting looking team, he wasn't use to seeing Riolu's in a Gym Battle, so he knew he needed to be careful. "Alright, Geodude. Use Magnitude!" He called out. The Geodude moved to the ground, and began punching at the ground, very quickly. Soon enough the ground began to rumble and shift.[-40 HP to Sandshrew]

"I knew you'd be stronger than him, I've been mentally preparing for this for days!" She called across the Arena to the Gym Leader. Sandshrew's footing became unsteady, and it fell over. "That's alright." She thought carefully for a moment. "Sandshrew. Use Fury Cutter!" Sandshrew rushed forward, getting close to Geodude and swiping it across the face. "Direct hit, pull back!" Sandshrew tried to back up, but it wasn't a very fast Pokemon.

Leader BrockBrock grinned as the gym began to rock and groan due to the small magnitude the Geodude created. "Good, It's great that you've prepared ahead of time." he told her. She was proving his first suspensions correct. She was ready for him. While Geodude was punching the ground, and starting to cause two defined cracks in the floor, he was distracted and was scratched right across the face. While the damage wasn't great, it caused him to lose his beat and knock him away from the ground. Brock wondered what she had up her green sleeves. "Alright, hit them again. Another magnitude!" He called out. The Geodude moved forward, watching the little armadillo retreat. He moved back to his original spot and began to punch the ground again, faster and harder. The ground began to shift and rock harder, and the floor began to slightly crater more around the Geodude.[-60 HP to Sandshrew]

She was caught by surprise as Geodude's attack increased in strength. The two well-defined cracks came to a point, and it shot up like a shiver of a splinter from a wooden post, hitting Sandshrew in the jaw and knocking it out. "No!" She gasped out, worry crossing her mind. "Return, you've earned a good rest." Sandshrew was pulled back in glowing red energy. She paused to consider her options. "That's it, my planning was right. Lucy, go." Riolu jumped up into the air, landing on the tip of the broken sliver, which supported her weight. "Force Palm." Lucy lunged forward, sending an attacking wave of energy from her hand that hit Geodude for double damage, causing a total of 100, before Geodude even had the chance to block or attack.

Leader BrockBrock watched as his attack ripped through his gym, and slammed into the Sandshrew, knocking him out. It was a hard hit to take, but it seemed that she was ready for it. She brought forth her Riolu once more. She stood perfectly balanced on the pointed rock his last attack created, which made her appear fairly graceful. But he knew it wouldn't last. The Geodude knew to attack again, but before he could reach the ground, the Pokemon was already attacking. The rock was sent backwards, rolling across the floor, and stopped by Brock's platform. "Boy, that was a strong attack!" he called out, returning his fainted Pokemon. "You really did think this through." he called out with a grin. He pulled out his last Pokeball, and took a breath. If any of his Pokemon could handle this, it was his last Pokemon. He pointed the ball out, and opened it as a large red beam lit the area, releasing his massive rocky snake, which promptly let out a roar. "Your Riolu is fast, but he's faster. Onix, use Rock Tomb!" He called out as Onix's tail lifted up and slammed into the ground hard, digging a ways into the floor. "Just watch, we aren't finished yet. If you thought that was strong, just wait until we beat you!" She didn't bother to recall her Riolu, she was confident she would win. Brock's second Pokemon caught Lucy off guard as it appeared and roared, nearly shaking the ground. "Whoa, that thing is huge!" The Pokemon towered over Lucy, who seemed to be nervous about the next opponent. It didn't help when the Behemoth scooped up the stones and threw them at her. She tried to dodge the attack, but the stones buried her beneath them. Slowly, she managed to dig her way out and rise back to her feet.
"Lucy, don't let it intimidate you. Stand tall and firm as stone." She spoke ironically, as she was fighting Rock/Ground-Types. "Use Force Palm, again." Lucy Jumped from the sliver, striking Onix's bulky body and dealing another 100 damage. "It's still standing, I'm impressed! I'm going to need one of these!" This time, she directed the comment towards Brock. Lucy pulled back, putting some distance between her and the Onix.

He heard the next attack, another heavy hitter. "Onix, Dodge it!" he called out, but with out fast the Riolu was, he didn't know which way to move. The attack hit hard, knocking the Onix, causing him to waver a bit, but he shook it off. "Onixs are very sturdy, and are very good assets to a team." he said to her, in reply for her wanting one. He was proud his Onix took the hit, but he knew it wouldn't last long. "Quick, hit her again with Rock Tomb" he called out in hopes of coming back.
