 While the rest of the island Dewford Town inhabits is of little interest and of little landscape save for rock and mountain, there is a series of caves and tunnels that take up the most of the northern part of the island known as the Granite Cave. Because of it being partly a sea cave and then having an inland structure, there are many interesting rock formations and different kinds of rock and sediment that make up the cave's structure, making this a relatively popular spot for geologists to study. The main tunnel of the cave is shallow and close to the surface, but moving further in the cave, it can go a fair way below sea level where it gets impossibly dark to see let alone move through.

She decided that, in case something jumped out of the darkness at her from beyond the glow, she wanted to have a Pokemon ready to battle. That couldn't be Shinx though, if he was knocked out in battle she would be left there in the dark. That would not be beneficial to her mental health. To join them, she released Treecko. "Hey, would you scout ahead a bit?" Treecko nodded and leapt ahead of the group. It was keeping an eye out, but when the stone came soaring out of the dark, it made contact with Treecko. The lizard fell off the rock he'd been perched on.
Rising back to his feet, he rose higher and higher until he rose to his full height as a Grovyle! Jumping into the air, he used the rock-side of the cave to propel himself high into the air. He had about a second to scan the entire cave, locate the source of this attack, and drop down on top of it. The second this more powerful form made contact, Geodude was drained of all health and collapsed on itself.

She had spent countless nights exploring the dozens of cave systems around Alola, had camped under the night sky more times than she could count, been locked in a closet for days at a time... She shook her head, trying to clear it of any unwanted thoughts. That was then, this is now. She has a whole new life ahead of her, a life free to be guided by her own will rather than someone else's. Never again would she let someone else decide what she would do and when she would do it. Freedom. That's what she had, open skies and a whole world to explore in her new nomadic life of a Gypsy. Guided by the glowing Shinx beside her, she walked on. By the time she had caught up to her Pokemon, it was still sinking in for her. Her cute little Treecko was gone, and in it's place stood the fierce-looking Grovyle. It had taken out two Geodudes, most likely using the same method it had as a Treecko. "T...Treecko?" She asked, looking at him awkwardly. "What happened?""Groooooo-vyle." The Pokemon corrected, grinning back at her. He had it's hands on it's hips like some sort of superhero who had just captured and unmasked the villain. She supposed in a way, Grovyle had just won the battle, but in this cave the war was only just beginning. TL;DR

If he had taken out two Geodude single-handedly, that was impressive. She looked around for another Pokemon, and spotted one as it rounded the corner coming from a side tunnel. "Let's see then, hit that thing." She didn't even know what move to have it use. Did Grovyle learn new moves as it evolved? Grovyle leapt into action, jumping from stone to boulder to wall, and finally flashing forward at superior speeds and slamming into the enemy.
"Gro-Grovyle!" The Grass-Type Pokemon shot at Makuhita, taunting it into making a move. Well, as it turns out, this was a bit of a mistake. Makuhita slapped Grovyle with a number of powerful chops that took the gecko off it's feet. Makuhita stood over Grovyle, continuing to rain down blow after blow, but Grovyle grabbed Makuhita's ankle and stole all of it's health, draining and draining until it could not even get back to it's feet anymore. Scout got back to his feet and gave the wild Pokemon a kick to the ribs for good measure. TL;DR

Shinx simply glowed brighter, however, and Katie continued trekking on with Grovyle at her side. She began to hear strange sounds, and thought she knew what it might mean. Dark cave, lone travelling girl, perfect set-up for ghosts to play their games. Grovyle seemed to be thinking along the same lines, but for some reason seemed to be losing his nerve. Was it possible he was afraid of ghosts? It was different for Katie, she had seen real horrors from the living. A spirit was nothing in comparison. -Backpack-

The strange noises and ominous laughter continued to follow Katie and her team through the tunnels. It was definitely not her imagination, she was sure of that by now. Something really was with them. Grovyle was really starting to freak out, and even jumped when she put a hand on his shoulder to comfort him. Deciding it would be best for her Scout , she returned him to his Pokeball. They were down one member now, and if whatever was following her was going to attack then it seemed the best time to do that would be... any... moment.

Katie walked into a stone wall for the first time since entering, and realized that despite the fact Shinx was glowing as brightly as ever, something in the air seemed to have a dampening effect on his light. She kept one hand on the stone and continued on, knowing that at least this way she would find her way back out in the end without hurting herself more. Suddenly they heard hurried movement up ahead. Whatever was there was coming right for them! Katie and Shinx both braced themselves for an oncoming attack. -Backpack-

Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ Shinx, jumping the gun, sent a jolt of electricity into the shadows. It lit up a kid as it struck him, who then fell into Katie and transferred some of the electricity to her. When the electricity left both of them, she pushed him off of her and glared. "What do you think you're playing at, running at us?!" She shouted, brushing dirt off of herself. She noted that this far into the cave, the signs of Human habitation were almost zero. Only the best and most daring seemed to come in this far, but they at least seemed to respect the sanctity of this place by not throwing their garbage all over the place. -Backpack-

"I wasn't attackin' you or nothin'!" He shouted back, indignantly. "If you must know, I was runnin' from..." but he trailed off, seeming to become embarrassed as though he'd said too much. Over his shoulder, Kira spotted an ominously glowing light. He saw her hesitant expression and looked back as well. "Oh, no, not from that." He shuffled his feet awkwardly. "I got scared and ran, but Umbreon didn't realize it." He knelt down and patted the Pokemon's head as it caught up to it's Trainer. One look told her it knew it had just been left to fend for itself against monsters or anything else this Kid had imagined, and it wasn't happy. He had forgotten about what had scared him and now he was focusing only on the challenge that had been issued to him. He wanted to prove himself, and prove that he was no punk who could be mocked or pushed around by her. She smiled at him, which seemed to annoy him even more, and he pointed a finger at her. "Umbreon, attack that Shinx!"
However, before his Pokemon could attack, she spoke again. "You think I'm stupid to battle you with my light source?" She smiled again. "That's such a rookie mistake." Where was this attitude coming from? It was almost like she was taking her own frustrations out on him, but that wasn't like her. She sent out another Pokemon, and the purple Aipom jumped up and down excitedly. Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ As much as the Kid tried to puff himself up and make himself look tough, the battle was a relatively short one. Each Pokemon only used a single move. Umbreon attacked first, ready to defend it's Trainer's honor. Pursuit worked well in the darkness, especially as it's glowing rings faded and it blended in with the surrounding cave. However, when a massive Thunder attack struck from within the cave itself, everything glowed brightly for a few seconds and then the electricity dissipated along with Umbreon's consciousness. "No, Umbreon!" The Kid shouted, returning his Pokeball and running into the darkness in the direction she knew the exit to be. Would me make it, or would he become lost in these caves? She wasn't sure, but felt sort of bad. TL;DR

Shinx glowed as brightly as ever and sat in her lap. Aipom took the opportunity to explore, never going past the field of light though. It wasn't until she began to hear those strange noises again that she got up and started in deeper. She also noted that she had been walking steadily at a downward angle, which told her that she must be well below ground level by now. It stretched far above what she could see. By the size of this, she was either miles below the surface, or she was beneath the mountainous terrain of the island. It looked like portions of the cave that she could actually see were damaged, as though strong Trainers would often come here to train or battle one another and/or the wild Pokemon. Portions of the cavern wall bore unmistakable signs of mining, as though for rare stones or fossils. One thing was for sure, any Trainer not scared off by those sounds, the darkness, or the wild Pokemon was welcome here. They had earned it, just as she had. -Backpack-

Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ Things were calm here at first, Katie was able to look around and wonder at the marvelous cavern that seemed to have formed millions of years ago. What secrets lay buried beneath these walls, beneath the very ground they were walking on? Well, the answer to that was apparently the spirit that had been following them. The ground beneath their feet began to shake a bit, and the small spirit dug it's way up from the ground and attacked! It used Shadow Sneak, a move Katie had seen once before as a child, but Aipom fought right back with a deafening Thunder. Taken aback, Sableye panicked and used the same move. Well, Aipom also used the same move and ended their scrap with lightning. Katie congratulated her Pokemon, healing the tiny monkey, and rose to continue exploring when she turned into the hovering face of Sableye. TL;DR

She jumped back, startled, but managed not to cry out in surprise. Aipom looked 'round and spotted the source of the commotion. Sableye attacked before Aipom was even ready in retaliation for what the purple monkey had done to the wild spirit's ghost-y pal. Sableye was lashing out, but Aipom gave out as good as he was taking. Both Pokemon looked close to fainting when Aipom used Thunder again. Not even the ghost could handle such an attack more than once. It was over quickly at least, and Katie hurriedly restored her Pokemon with a couple of potions again. If nothing else, at least these wild Pokemon attacking them would be worth some experience. TL;DR

Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ Scout appeared in a sudden flash of red light. Both of them could feel, could sense, that the spirits were gone. They had tucked their tails between their legs and left to find someone else to terrorize. Scout was happy to walk along beside Katie, Aipom, and Shinx again and even more pleased to get to explore the rest of the cavern. It was so large, it might just take all day to explore all of it, but he was also looking for wild Pokemon to battle as well. He found one in a Geodude, who was posing as a rock. It sprung and attacked just as Grovyle was sneaking up on it, but Scout was too fast and absorbed every bit of it's health before it could hit him.

♪ My Bartender she's from the islands, her body's been kissed by the sun. Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ The next wild Pokemon, which would later turn out to be the last Pokemon Katie would meet in the Granite Cave system, was an Aron. It looked so tough and sturdy, and yet still cute. Katie wanted to capture it for her team. It was even fast enough to hit first, slashing at Aipom with steel claws that retracted back into tiny paws after it had attacked. Aipom looked weak already, but countered with the same Thunder attack it had already used numerous times in these caves, and before the battle could continue and Aipom could be slashed again, Katie threw out a Pokeball. it shook a few times, but stilled. She ran forward to collect her new Pokemon and heal Aipom.
