Professor Birch is the resident Pokémon Professor of Littleroot Town in the Hoenn region. He studies many things, but he primarily studies the habits and habitats of wild Pokemon. Because of his research, a lot of the time he actually isn't in his labs at all, and can be found exploring and studying all over the region. Due to his many travels, Birch is known to have an array of many Pokemon with him, varying in rarity, size and type. Birch is much more outgoing and active then all other professors in his field, mostly because he hardly ever spends time in his actual lab, leaving his assistants in charge of the research back at the lab. However, he never seems to busy to help a new young boy or girl get started on their journey. He lives near the laboratory with his wife, who makes regular trips to the Labs in worry of Birch as he is away on his travels.

A girl peeked in, glancing around and called out. "Professor Birch..? Are you here professor Birch?" The girl asked, slowly entering. Her long black hair was in a ponytail, and she wore a mint green dress with her white boots. "Don't tell me he's out.."

It had been a quiet morning in the laboratory that belonged to the renowned Professor Birch, but he knew well enough in his experience that there would be a few new trainers or otherwise coming through the halls like they always did. Low and behold though, as the good professor had come back through the doorways from a hallway, entering into the main of the laboratory, he found himself in the company of a young girl coming in through the front doors. "Yes, yes come in," he greeted with a big smile, coming towards her. "Professor Birch at your service. How can I help you today," he inquired, holding out his hand for a shake.

"My mom, well, she said before I go and explore, I need one. Which is obvious, though." She said quietly.

Birch smiled, taking back his hand, gripping a clip board now in both hands, beaming down at her as she gave her answer. What a coincidence, he'd just been wondering if any of his starters would get to start their adventure today. "Of course I do! Always for the eager trainer to be, come with me," Birch replied as he waved her to follow. "Did you know which Pokémon you wanted to choose today? I can offer you a Treecko, a Mudkip, or a Torchic," he inquired.

[quote author=" Elemental Paradisity" "Well, um..I haven't been able to choose between Mudkip or Treecko. Mudkip is pretty cute right now, but Treecko looks amazing." She said, frowning. "Oh! By the way, I'm Rose Patterson." She said, rubbing the back of her neck. "How rude of me."

Birch smiled down at the young trainer to be. "It is nice to meet you Rose," he returned in kind as he came to a table that had three Pokeballs set out on it. He could understand her inability to make a solid decision. It was never easy choosing a partner that would aid you in the journey to come. "Well, if you would like, you can open the Pokeballs and see if you take to one or the other more. Sometimes the Pokémon choose the trainers instead of the other way around," Birch offered.

Katie Du'MontHer foot catching on a tree root, a young blonde-haired girl stumbled into a quaint little town. A nearby sign declared her to be in 'Littleroot Town'. She caught herself at the last moment and straightened up, smoothing out her tank top and looking around to make sure nobody had seen her fumble. Everybody knew that if you wanted to start your own adventure, you had to talk to a Pokemon Professor. That's how she ended up in this place. According to a passing Trainer, one just so happened to live here with his family. "Hello?" She called out, knocking on the front door. It seemed rude to her to just barge in unannounced. "I'm looking for the Professor who works here." Polite and reserved, being this vocal was somewhat rare. Nobody answered the door, so she took the welcome mat at it's word and walked in. The air-conditioning washed over her. It was a wonderful feeling after her lengthy walk, and she soaked up the cool air as long as she could, standing there with her eyes closed.

Professor BirchThe Professor had quite a busy day planned. He had decided to go into the Lab today and check up on some of the researchers, and how everything was running. Birch usually liked studying Pokemon out somewhere in the wilderness, having gotten there by a Tropius or some other flying types of sorts. But today he felt the need to go into the labs and see how things were fairing. He had been checking up on how the Pokemon were doing in their areas for research, and one Pokemon in particular was catching their eye. It was a Taillow from one of the near by Cities, with an eating disorder. Not one that most would have expected. He tended to over eat. The professor smiled and scooped up the little, but heavy, bird type in his hands, as it formed to his hand almost, and began out of it's habitat. "You know, Pudge, keep this up and we'll have to put you on a diet." He began. "And no one likes those, my friend!" he spoke with a laugh. But the Taillow merely let out a lazy chirp. The professor began out into the main of the lab, with the rather fat bird in hand, and was ready to take it to one of the testing areas, to check his vitals. He had missed the knock at the door entirely, but was alerted by the soft unfamiliar voice. He looked over and spotted a young woman with light blonde hair. "Why hello, you've found him!" He spoke, giving her a bright smile. He began towards her, only stopping to set down Pudge on one of the plat forms for Pokemon to perch on, to which he almost formed to it as well, and watched the professor walk away, giving him a rueful chirp. "How may I help you out today?" he asked her in his naturally friendly voice.

Katie Du'Mont She was visibly distracted by the adorably pudgy bird, stealing repeated looks at it while the Professor made his way over. "I..." She began, eyes flicking from the bird back to the Professor again. "What sort of bird is that?" She asked him, pointing. "I've never seen one like it, and it's very cute." She had always been fond of birds, and even had a sketch-pad in her bag filled with drawings of the local Pikipek and other birds she'd encountered. He explained, and she made a mental note to hunt for a Taillow of her own. Suddenly she realized how rude she'd just been. She was wasting his valuable time, and he could have been doing something else with it.
"I'm sorry." The well-worn words slipped out of her mouth before she even realized it. "Where I'm from, you can choose from Fire, Water, or Grass. I'd like the Grass-Type." She was imagining the winged Starter Pokemon Rowlet she'd become very fond of, and was excited to receive an owl of her own.

Professor BirchBirch watched her attention flick him then to the bird a few times, her soft voice trailing off until she questioned what he was. It was clear she wasn't from around this area, so he was happy to explain. "This not-so-little guy is a Taillow. We've been calling him Pudge." Birch answered with a little snicker, amused at his 'creative' naming skills. Though Pudge appeared less then amused, and gave him another rueful chirp. "They are quite common here in Hoenn. Almost that of a Pidgey, Pidove, or Pikipek." He told her. They weren't as common as Pidgey or Pidove, knowing that most streets and onings were plagued with them in Unova and Kanto, but it gave her the right direction. "Though, they usually aren't quite this round. He's about to start a nice healthy diet." Birch finished with a nod, though the bird let out a few less then happy chirps at him, not happy about the diet before standing and attempting to leave, to only just waddle to the other side of the perch and sit facing away. Birch couldn't help but laugh at it's anger and gave the bird a few pets and strokes which he regretfully accepted.
He looked back to her as she apologized and began on about her reason for showing up. "No need to be sorry!" He told her with a large smile and pat her on the back. "You are correct, right this way!" He told her gleefully. He walked her over to the table with three Pokeballs on it and plucked one from the table. He held it out to her. "Alright, here you are, One fine Treecko for you." He told her and gave her time to take it before reaching into his lab coat and pulling out a few other items she might need. "Here, you might want these as well. They'll come in handy out there on the road!" He responded. Kathrine has received: Treecko Lv. 5 HP- 40 Ability: Pound- 40 Leer- Lowers target's defense by one stage Infinite Pokeballs Infinite Potions Pokedex

Nicolai "Servo" DakariThe morning had been kind to the man who now found himself standing curiously outside the door of what was clearly a Pokemon research facility. Sure, it had begun with torrential rain that had completely drenched everything he owned in the nearby forest - including the clothes he now wore. And yes, that same cold rain chilled him down to the bone, his socks making a rather comical sloshing noise with each step he'd taken on his morning hike to where he now stood. And yet, in spite of the losses he had endured today with most of his gear destroyed in the terrible weather, and the cold turning his skin an even paler color than it normally was - Nicolai Dakari looked almost happy with his knuckles rapping against the door to Birch's laboratory. He had ventured so far to get to this very moment. What was a little more suffering to a monumental success? "Professor Birch?" He called out in a solemn tone, the majority of his voice lost to the wind and rain. Nicolai was familiar with the professor of the Hoenn region, though this familiarity was in reputation only. He had done some research on this small town before deciding upon starting here and decided it had some fantastic benefits where he was concerned. So learning of the professor he would be dealing with only seemed natural as a step when deciding upon becoming a registered trainer in the Hoenn region. The male's hands gave the lab door another few, firm knocks before both hands found themselves around his goggles, sliding them up over his forehead before smoothing back his drenched hair. As useful as they were, the rain was causing them to fog to the point where Nick wasn't even sure he had been knocking on an actual door. "Professor Birch? Is anyone here?" He stated again, twitching at the strange feeling along his neck suddenly as the pink creature that had been taking refuge against his undershirt popped it's little 'hands' along his collar and used them to peek over the inside of his uniform. "I'm c-cold!" The ditto whined in a soft tone, beginning to shiver the moment that it found itself exposed to the elements. This part of the region was mildly tempered typically but Nicolai had long embraced the fact that the universe hated something about him and needed to make every single thing he did that much harder. "That's fine by me.." He mused to himself with a smirk, taking a step away from the door and placing his hand flat over Flux's head so that the poor creature didn't get any wetter than it already was. The last thing he needed today was a sick Pokemon - that was an inconvenience best avoided if possible. He'd already lost too many others to everything from combat to starvation. Flux's purpose made losing it the same way he'd lost others unacceptable. (I am pretty sure professor doesn't allow you any posting exp or anything so I set everything up and left it at zero Hope that's okay, only did it because it saves me time later) Trainer Encounter: 0/25 Wild Encounter: 0/5 Item posting - specific lure 0/20 Inventory:- x1 ampharosite, x1 metal powder, x1 Metal coat {Pokemon Team} "Quanta" Porygon - Genderless (female for the lolz!) SorukaNyoki Professor BirchThe professor had been sitting at his desk alone. A few assistants resided within the Lab, too keep up work. But it was fairly quiet and empty for the most part. Half of the assistants and technicians were either home or taking advantage of the poor weather and are observing and learning from the Pokemon while in more extreme weather conditions. They didn't have very many important things to take care of, so Birch took this bit of down time to read and learn about Pokemon from other regions. He hadn't really expected anyone to stop by today, nor did he have any appointments, so he hadn't paid attention to the first knock at the door. It wasn't until the next knock, which were followed by a few more, that caused him to look up from his book. Professor Birch got to his feet and walked to the door, almost expecting it to have been his imagination. He pulled the door open and looked out with a curious expression. "Oh, hello! I'm so sorry!" Birch exclaimed, stepping back and pulled the door open. "Please come inside and out of the rain!" He offered to the male. After pulling the door open for him, he got to look him over. He had bright red hair, googles which he wasn't wearing, as well as a blue Pokemon sticking out of his shirt. He couldn't exactly make out what it was, which it could be a number of Pokemon; Azumarill, small squirtle, Chimecho, only time would tell when he got a good look. Birch would just the door if he accepted the invitation. Though, with the knocking and how drenched he was, Birch wouldn't imagine he'd deny it. "I'm sorry I didn't answer sooner. Maybe we can see if we can find a towel for you." Birch offered him in a friendly tone, looking to the assistant as they got up to search. When working with young mudkip, or any young water type for that matter, it was always nice to have a towel on hand. "While he's looking for that, how could I help you?" Birch asked. The man was a bit older then most that come in to get a starter, so he wasn't sure what the male would be needing.(Actually no, a post is a post, so it would count for exp. You're getting that exp whether you like it or not!)

Nicolai "Servo" DakariTruth be told, in the moments prior to the professor opening the door to his laboratory, Nicolai had actually considered sneaking around the back to get a better look inside. After everything he'd gone through there was no way he would actually break into the lab to try and steal a Pokemon. That would be borderline insanity, not to mention highly counterproductive to his actual cause. Still... A peek around was tempting for someone with as colorful a past as the redhead in the black outfit. His blue eyes were already beginning to drift up to the nearest window when the sudden opening of the main door shook him from his thoughts. If he looked at all suspicious, there was a great chance that it didn't show. Nicolai's practiced calm and stoic expression were both of legendary caliber when the job called for it. With a small, polite smile, Nicolai turned his gaze back to the professor, the ditto in his shirt swatting the raindrops that had formed on his hand before they could leak down and onto the creature's face. This was certainly the man he had come to meet, his features matched perfectly with the data Nick had gleaned in his search for a start. This was a good thing. Usually, these places had aids or other trainers. The fewer people he had to deal with, the better. "Professor Birch?" Nicolai asked as if he didn't already know the answer, his tone unbefitting of a man who had just trudged over an hour through the rain. Without waiting for an answer to his original question when the professor seemed to motion for him to enter, the redheaded man nodded slightly and stepped just inside the door, his boots making an obnoxious squealing noise that instantly caused him to go rigid where he stood. With a quick glance down to the puddle that was forming beneath his feet, Nicolai took only a slow step to his right in an attempt to give the professor enough room to close the door, lest the weather invade his laboratory. "I'm the one who should be apologizing. Today was, admittedly, not the best one for coming to start my journey. Unfortunately, I don't have a Castform for predicting the weather in advance." He offered with an apologetic shrug, not so much as lifting his feet to advance any further into the lab. As little as he actually cared, Nicolai was fairly certain it would come off as rude to start trudging through this place and leaving puddles in his wake. Plus, if he was being honest with himself, this was a fairly good vantage point to take in the layout of the lab - a good criminal was always on the lookout for anything in his environment that could be used as either advantage or escape, and while the not so young man was attempting to leave the majority of that life behind, some habits refused to die. When his eyes fell on the aid who seemed to be seeking a towel for him to dry himself with, Nicolai repositioned his goggles atop his head, continuing to speak under the guise of curiosity even while his eyes scanned the room with what he hoped was not seen as a wicked intent. "I should be more clear in my explanation. My name is Nicolai Dakari and I have come to seek entrance into the world of aspiring trainers." The man with the blue eyes had certainly forced his share of false smiles, and he definitely could have here. Except that there was no need to do so this time around. The toothy grin that pulled his lips up was entirely genuine, and considering the work he'd had to put in to get here - it damned well have better been. "I understand that usually, trainers begin their adventures at a much younger age then I am attempting now, but I saw no legal reason why an adult couldn't become a registered trainer as well. I hope that this isn't a problem... I just happen to be a bit of a late bloomer I suppose." Whether he was aware that the professor had noted his age and appearance, or had simply planned to mow down this topic to begin with, was anyone's guess. Still, he merely stood where he was, eyes occasionally taking in some random detail of the lab while he waited for the professor to take his meaning. The last thing he wanted today was more trouble, so, assuming the rain had been his bout of bad luck for the day the redhead saw little reason why he couldn't get through this process painlessly. SorukaNyoki Professor BirchAfter inviting the male in, he closed the door behind him to keep the rain out side. Once he closed the door he took a step back from the male, as he asked him is name. "Oh! I'm sorry again! Yes I am Professor Birch." He apologized. Normally he would have introduced himself by know, but he was caught by surprise by the male in the rain. It was rather unfortunate, not so much the forming puddle, but the red head having to travel all this way in this weather. Birch didn't actually mind the puddle at all, He's had many of mudkip, and plenty of other water types, hose the lab down one time or another, so it made no difference to him. The man apologized for his timing, saying it wasn't a good day to start. "No need to apologize. The weather might not be all that great, but I think any day is a good day to start off on something new." He explained with a nod. Birch was a traveler so he's began off in the rain before, and that didn't hinder his experiences with Pokemon and research, if anything it might have helped him further. As the male repositioned his goggles, the assistant returned with a towel for him, holding it out for the male to take and use as needed. Birch found it odd that he was wearing goggles, but didn't think much of it, it probably was a great help in this kind of weather. He began to explain his reason for being there, as well as introduced himself. "Well that's just amazing." He replied with a wide smile. It was always good to meet someone interested in starting their travels and broadening their horizons. It was clear to Birch that Nicolai was a much older male then most were then they started, and he explained that as well. "Well, I suppose you may be a 'late bloomer' but I have seen all ages coming through, not just teenagers. You are right, there is no cut off age to starting a new chapter in your life." He explained beaming at the male. He had seen plenty of people coming her making up for lost time on a dream, or even just deciding to make a life change. Now that he was aware of the male's intentions he gestured him to follow as Birch made his way towards a table with three Pokeballs sitting on top. "Do you know which starter you would like to have as your partner?" He asked curious if the male already knew which starter he would have liked.

Nicolai "Servo" DakariWhen the professor finally confirmed what Nicolai already knew, the redhead nodded quietly, not really saying or doing anything until after the professor continued. As expected from his reports - Birch was an optimist. Most of the people in his position were so it was to be expected. Optimistic people asked fewer questions when someone seemed to align themselves with whatever passion said person had. In this case, Pokemon. "I couldn't have said it better myself Professor. Every day is an opportunity to grow." Briefly, Nick's mind flashed back to someplace else. He didn't need to recall where or who he had been talking to, but the lesson was still clear to this day and brought a curt smile to his lips. The best lies were always founded on truth. When the aid offered him a towel, Nicolai nodded once more in gratitude, taking the offering and beginning to dry his uniform, as well as the puddle on the floor. His hair would only soak again the moment he departed but at least with his uniform padded dry he wouldn't need to worry about tracking water through the lab. As he was nearing the end of his clean up, the male's eyebrow ed up in response to the short comment made by professor birch, easing back a bit as he explained the meaning behind his 'amazement'. People who used words for a lesser value than they should always irritated Nicolai. Sure, perception was reality and every one was different but... The word amazing in particular was something Nick held in high regard. If he had seen the face of god floating down from the heavens as he had been on his way to the lab - THAT would have been amazing. Had he any control over the robotic prototype tucked away in a ball on his belt, that would be amazing. So far as he could tell though, there was nothing particularly amazing about a grown man wanting to tinker in the world of children through. That was more mundane or desperate than anything else. Still, Nick didn't comment on the professor's choice of words, following the heavyset man after returning the towel to the aid with a smile and stepping up to the table. It 'amazed' Nick when the professor asked him if he had any idea about the pokemon he wanted to take when being registered. Not because he actually didn't have any ideas, but because this was something that had made him scoff in his research. The problem with children becoming trainers was that most of them quite literally jumped into this life on impulse. They had absolutely no idea what they were doing and held very little regard for the choice. They wanted whatever looked cool, or what happened to be their favorite type as opposed to true battle potential. Nicolai had already put in countless hours of work learning the abilities, strengths, and weaknesses of what he knew were the Torchic, Mudkip, and Treeko on the table as well as the general path he intended to take on his gym challenge route. As such, it was ironic, and a bit hypocritical that Nicolai didn't actually care which of the three Pokemon he ended up with. His distaste for most Pokemon made it hard to concede to one over the other even after so much research. This was because he never truly intended to use whatever he walked away with today. For a moment, his lips parted, a question on them that never came to life. Asking if he could skip the requisition might look suspicious and that was the last thing he needed. So instead he merely leaned over the table and peered down at the balls in mock thought, his eyes shifting back and forth between them until he lifted one of the three and held it out quizzically for the professor to examine. "Would Torchic be alright with you Professor Birch? Fire Pokemon are something I have experience with so I think this will be a good fit." He asked with a smile... At least this one would be good for starting campfires. That would save Nicolai minutes a day. SorukaNyoki Professor BirchThe Professor grinned as the male agreed with him. He seemed to be quite a kind and considerate fellow, despite the interesting outfit he was wearing. Birch let him have time to dry himself the best he could as he moved onto cleaning the puddle which Birch thought was nice and something he hadn't needed to do. Birch had noticed the arched eyebrow at him, but he hadn't really made sense of why. The Professor just assumed he was taking thought as to what his choice would be. What else could it mean, this choice was a big one, picking a partner to have on his journey. It was something Birch was always excited and interesting to see, who would choose what. He often would try and catch or learn about the path those came through took. IN Contests or Gym battles, it was rather interesting to see the trainers and starters grow. Birch gave him time to mull over his options, as he leaned over the table. Birch appreciated the time and consideration he was taking to make sure he had the right starter for him. If Birch would guess, he would have assumed Nicolai would choose Mudkip, due to the little blue Pokemon he caught a glimpse of, never would have imagined what Pokemon it actually was. However Birch was wrong. He selected Torchic asking if it was alright, and explained it was because his experience with fire times. "Definitely a smart choice then! Of course you may select the Torchic." Handing the new Pokeball back to the male, before reaching into his lab coat and pulled out a few items, Pokeballs and Potions as well was a Pokedex out for him. "Here, you can have these too to help you get a jump start on your travels." He offered the redhead with a kind smile.Nicolai has received:Torchic Lv. 5 HP- 40 Ability: Scratch- 30 Growl- Lowers target's attack by one stage 0/15 Infinite Pokeballs Infinite Potions Pokedex

Nicolai "Servo" Dakari"I expected as much, just wanted to clarify how the process worked." Nick concluded, recollecting the ball and attaching it to his belt in a practiced fashion even as Flux struggled to peer out of his shirt and wiggle small arms as if wanting to touch his newest comrade. No sooner had he pressed an index finger into the soft material that made up his ditto, forcing flux back into his shirt than Professor Birch began to hand him the real reason he had come in the first place. Nicolai took his time, gathering the medical items and spare Pokeballs that would certainly make his life easier - before casting his eyes upon the real prize. No doubt the redheaded man's eyes remained on the small electronic device for perhaps a touch too long before he reached out and took it, a mental breath Nick wasn't even aware he had been holding being released at last. This was it. He was a registered trainer. No foul past to deal with, no police to hunt him down. No one looking for A middle-aged man who had simply decided he wanted to see the world. "Thank you professor Birch." He spoke calmly, clutching the Pokedex carefully as if he suspected it might turn to dust in his hands. From here on out he needed to remain on the 'up and up' as it were. No more reckless crimes. He simply needed to gather his resources and prepare for the inevitable conclusion that would result of his tampering in this region. Without so much as another word, the man with the goggles on his forehead turned and started back towards the door - oblivious to both the weather that awaited him and pleasantries that were typically required when someone gave a gift of this magnitude. Thankfully, Nick did pause as he opened the door, turning his blue eyes back on professor birch even while his mind was already beginning to wander far off ahead. "This device is already registered? Also.. Waterproof correct?" He asked carefully, tilting his head to the rain outside as if such an obvious thing required explanation. SorukaNyoki Professor BirchThe Professor nodded to him as he stated he was clarifying. He knew some people believed it could be a fairly long process, but he tried to make it fairly easy. The Professor watch him accept the Pokeball, as well as began to claim his items to help him out. Nicolai turned back to thank him, which caused the Professor to smile again. "You're welcome, I'm always happy to help someone out on their travels." He explained with a nod. However, it seemed Nicolai was on a hurry as he quickly turned around and made his way to the door. However he stopped before turning back to ask about the Pokedex. "Oh, of course. They were designed to be completely waterproof." He nodded to him. He knew quite a few trainers and researchers who have gone diving with their Pokedex, without finding a limit to it's waterproof design.

KAISER KWON. Weathered combat boots clopped across the tiled floor, leaving echoes in their wake. Although she had been to the laboratory only once before, on a middle school field trip, Kaiser strode towards the receptionist's desk with the brisk confidence of someone who knew what she was doing. Kaiser did not, in fact, know what she was doing, but that didn't matter. What mattered was that she looked like she did. Fake it 'til you make it, or so the saying went.
"Kaiser Kwon," she said as soon as she reached the desk, drumming her fingers on the polished surface. "I have a twelve o'clock appointment with Professor Birch." She was ten minutes early, of course. She never risked running late.
The receptionist let her through, pointing towards Professor Birch's office. Kaiser made a beeline there but paused once she reached the door, unsure of herself. She had no experience with Pokemon. She had no love for Pokemon. Once, a wild Zigzagoon had followed one of her little brothers home. He had begged to keep it, he wept and wailed, but Kaiser made him turn it loose. There were too many mouths to feed as it was.
Her little brother had wanted but not needed a Pokemon. His older sister now needed but not wanted a Pokemon. Was this what people called irony?
With a heavy sign, Kaiser twisted the doorknob and let herself in. "Are you in, Professor? I'm here for my starter."

teacupJust recently it had been just a tad slow in traffic in the Hoenn Laboratory, the large influx of new trainers coming to receive their starters having depleted for some time. It wasn't an inconvenience by any means, giving the laboratory as a whole the time to for focusing on other things, but while that in itself was rewarding, there was nothing better to the good Professor of Hoenn than sending out a new trainer with the growing unruly starter pokemon he had to care for in their time there, always pleased when an opportunity for just that came up. The Pokemon definitely did deserve to be out traveling with a partner to call their own. It seemed perhaps that today might be just the ticket, he was expecting an appointment with an up and coming trainer, and he just couldn't wait to meet the new prospective traveler. . He smiled, noting the knock on his door, tucking a set of clipboards and paper under one arm before moving towards the door. Standing on the other side was a young woman was standing before him, just the appointment he had been expecting, and he smiled with a gleam in his eye as he took a step forward from the side of the door. "Afternoon, it's such a pleasure! And not a second late I see! Please, step inside," he offered, stepping aside with a gentle sweep of his arm, gesturing for her to step inside.

KAISER KWON. "Er, thank you," Kaiser said stiffly as Professor Birch greeted her at the door, a frown etched deep into her face. She didn't mean to be brusque—it was just that she never knew how to deal with such friendly people.
Stepping deeper into the room, Kaiser opened the flap of the battered messenger bag slung over her shoulder. "Actually, I didn't just come here to get my starter," she said, withdrawing a crisp manila envelope. She offered it to Professor Birch. "I want to join your research team."
Should Professor Birch open the envelope, he would find that it contained glowing letters of recommendation from two teachers, a high school transcript, a resume stuffed with what seemed to be more extracurricular activities than there were hours in a day, and the best lab report she had written for her biology class. It was an impressive collection, designed to impress a traditional college admissions committee.
This was not a traditional college admissions committee. This was a Pokemon Laboratory. And none of these documents mentioned Pokemon even once.
Kaiser met Professor Birch's eyes, her gaze dark and intense. "Let me be perfectly honest. I have zero experience with Pokemon and I don't intend on becoming a professional Pokemon researcher when I'm older. I want this experience because I think it'll help me later when I'm a ranger. But I learn quick and I work hard. No matter what, I won't disappoint you."

teacupHaving invited the young new prospect into his office, Birch was beaming, ready to begin to discuss the Pokemon indigenous to the Hoenn region, get them all set and on their way, but it wasn't a moment later that he was met with a different kind of reason for visiting. A researcher? How exciting! "Oh is that so? My my, we are always elated to have some researchers running around, there's an incredibly long list of things that we are all still learning each day, that would be wonderful," Birch smiled wide, and he didn't hesitate to take the envelope that had been handed to him. It wasn't a requirement to have any kind of recommendations or transcripts for experience to apply for the researcher program, but it definitely did help him get an idea of whom it was he was going to be taking on. He was smiling still, glancing over the glowing words and raving commendations of young Kaiser's work in her schooling and otherwise, but he did notice something a little peculiar... Then she spoke. "Hmm," he thought for a moment, he'd certainly met all kinds of individuals coming through his facility for one reason or another, but this was certainly a... different kind of situation. "Well, that's still no trouble, I can't turn my nose up at such a well rounded and exceptional portfolio already," he began, nodding along with himself as he thought. "But I think that you joining the research program will become more beneficial than you might initially think," Birch noted. "Pokemon are as much a part of this world, as much a part of our daily lives as the food that we eat or the places that we visit. Not only are they important and vital to our ecosystems and how we as humans interact with those ecosystems, but they are invaluable. They can teach things that even the most experienced professors and scholars have only just begun to study," the good professor explained, and through all of this he was chipper and light in his tone, even growing a bit excited. There was so much for this young budding researcher to discover! "Becoming a ranger is admirable, a wonderful decision to make, but I'm glad that you've started here. Pokemon are going to be a part of everything that you do after you leave this facility today, and learning about them, and learning how to befriend them and recognize their individual talents like a Ranger needs to be able to do, why, this is your best first step," he finished with a beaming smile once again, declaring that this was the first step of a brand new part of her life. He moved in his office, over to a desk on the far wall, where a tray with three Pokeballs remained. He brought it up gently into his hands before placing it on his desk in the center of the room, taking a seat on the other side. "And it starts here. Your very first Pokemon," he offered softly, the three Pokeballs had a name plate in front of each, denoting the species that was contained.

KAISER KWON. Kaiser might put on a stoic face, but she wore her heart on her sleeve. As Professor Birch spoke, his words kind and encouraging rather than condemning, she began to tear up. She'd been making hard decisions her entire life. How should she tell her little brother that they couldn't afford to keep a pet? How many classes should she skip to take an extra shift at work? Should she check her mother into the hospital without telling her father? She acted like she had all the answers, but often she was stumbling blindly in the dark. It was so nice, once in a while, to have someone else light the way.
"Thank you, Professor," Kaiser said somewhat louder than was strictly necessary, hurriedly swiping at her reddened eyes with the sleeve of her jacket. He might change his mind if she showed too much weakness. "I... I needed to hear that. Really."
Kaiser stepped closer to the desk, focusing on the three Pokeballs placed before her. "I want the Torchic, please," she said, having spent hours yesterday agonizing over which starter would be best for her. She picked the Fire-type's Pokeball up and cradled it in her hands. How miraculous, that there was life in such a small container.
She turned to face Professor Birch. "So where do I start?"
