"Every time I see the light I'm falling deeper in debt" * Avalon Brightburn * The breakfast preparations and eating went smoothly, and he even caught a glimpse of Beryl in the meantime. But they didn't talk, as after finishing cleaning, he left the building. He had to look around for a map, as he didn't quite knew where the gym was. It was a Rock-type one, so it was probably closer to the mountains, rather than the shore. Thankfully there was a map on the side of the Pokemon Center, easily accessible and readable. And like he guessed, the gym was on the side of the mountain, and so he will probably need to climb to reach it. Unfortunate, but he did had the Slither Wing.. maybe getting an actual Pokemon to ride would be helpful."If I've never seen the good how can it come to amend"

"Every time I see the light I'm falling deeper in debt" * Avalon Brightburn * Reaching the base of the place was easy enough, even though it was pretty far from the Pokemon Center. But that was still the simplest part of the venture, since the slope leading to the gym itself seemed pretty steep. Not ideal for him, or really anyone that has even slightly poor physical condition, but who was he to complain about it. It seemed on par with Viola's gym and her web tight-rope - bad for anyone with one less leg. Avalon sighed and to make things easier for himself, he send out Ailes out. He lacked better Pokemon to ride on, but Slither Wing was thankfully big and strong enough to carry him.. and climb. The Pokemon shook itself and stretched, as if understanding the assignment ahead of time and lowering itself enough for him to climb on their back. He patted them in the back, before climbing on it and settling down nicely, somewhat well secured. It was still a bit uncomfortable, since the Pokemon was not made for carrying people, but it was better than nothing. And climbing the slope himself. He wanted to preserve energy, for whatever gym challenge was ahead.
Ailes climbed slowly, testing the ground, but was efficient and careful, and Avalon was grateful for the slow pace for once. They didn't need more accidents, especially that high up. But once they got pretty high, he started to wonder if it was actually the right place. There was no door or a sign indicating that it was even a gym. Just a cave entrance of sorts. Perturbed, he dismounted Slither Wing and put them back in the PokeBall, just so they could rest a bit before the potential gym battle, then he investigated the entrance up close. It didn't quite look natural, and had a man-touch, as if to make sure it's safe. To his somewhat relief, it did seem to be well lit, and not just some tunnel leading inside a mountain, and the short passage led to a reasonably sized cavern, with a tall, wide formation in the middle. As natural it looked, it seemed to have ropes and climbing equipment attached to it, like it was a scaling wall. That definitely didn't bode well for them - even if they healed well and were fit, climbing wasn't their strongest trait. And they didn't like heights that much either. But it was still a lot simpler than Viola's gym, really. It took a moment, but he also spotted another person inside. It looked like a normal hiker, adjusting the ropes. He doubted it would be that easy to find the gym leader, so it must been the assistant. The man sighed loudly, satisfied of his work, before pausing as if sensing that he wasn't alone. He turned to face them, without them having to call for his attention. "Ah, challenger!" the hiker called, sounding a bit surprised, but quickly gathered himself and fixed posture. "I'm sorry, I didn't notice you!" "That's fine." he waved his hand slightly, not being bothered at all. It seemed important to make sure the ropes and equipment is in best shape. "I'm assuming the gym leader is on top of.. that?" "Why, yes. Grant climbed up there shortly before your arrival." the man responded simply, looking up for a moment. He couldn't see the other man from down there, so he had to believe him. "It's the part of the challenge! Although Grant won't disqualify anyone who needs Pokemon's assistance for one reason or another." "No no, I will be fine. Just making sure." at least he hoped he will be. No, surely it won't that hard. It seemed a lot safer than actual mountain. And no gym challenge should be impossible for less fit people. So, he didn't need Pokemons to help him.. besides, he didn't had any Psychic or Flying Pokemons that could.
"If you insist so, then let's get the battle started." right, the man couldn't just put him in harness and let him climb it for nothing. He still had a job to do and challenge them. And so they took the right spot on the field and waited for the cue to begin. "Rhyhorn!" Fascinating. He already knew they had Pokemons from all around the world, especially Kanto and Johto, and at least it wasn't a Geodude or Onix. Rhyhorns weren't nearly as common in gyms. "Allegra!" It was to be expected, for them to send out a Grass Pokemon like that. They had a few more in their arsenal, but she seemed like the best for the gym trainer, saving others for the leader himself. She stretched, shaking the leaves attached to her arms, before squaring up against her opponent. She seemed only a little nervous, for her first gym debut, and Rhyhorn did seem a bit intimidating. "Hope you came prepared." the assistant called, and his Pokemon 'hrumpf'ed loudly in response. "Start with Horn Attack!" "Hit it back with Drain Punch!" he shouted back, just as Rhyhorn began charging head-on at her. She took several quick steps back, as if trying to avoid collision with the Rock Pokemon, before ducking with one of her 'fists' glowing. Rhyhorn ran straight into Grovyle, nearly trampling her, but then she used her lowered position to land successful Drain Punch right into his less hardened chin. The impact was surprisingly strong enough to topple her opponent sideways, and due to its weight and short limbs, it couldn't regain balance easily or quickly enough, before rolling few feet away. Not that it matted, since even after the dust settled and it stopped rolling, it didn't move an inch, although its rocky chest was still raising and falling. So, definitely not dead. Just fainted. "Aaalright, well.. that was quick." the man rubbed his neck, sounding a bit embarrassed, before calling his Pokemon back. Avalon waited a moment to see if he will sent another, but it seemed unlikely. First few assistants had only one Pokemon, it seemed. "Your Pokemon looked a bit nervous, but she does pack a punch. No pun intended!" "Yeah.." he muttered, as he called Allegra back too. She wasn't exactly fearful, of battles nor in general, but it was definitely not ideal reaction. But, he could only hope it will get better with time and more practice. She still had one more evolution to go through, and those always seemed to affect Pokemons personalities.. for the better or worse. "Alright kid, let's get you all strapped and ready to climb." man's voice snapped him back to reality, and without even a comment on his wording, they walked up to the wall and equipment, to get over with it.

"Every time I see the light I'm falling deeper in debt" * Avalon Brightburn * Getting him all wrapped up in the harness was probably the easiest part. It was a bit awkward, given his tall build, but overall it was still a smooth procedure. "All's good." the man declared, giving him a friendly pat in the back. Given his thick build, it hurt a bit. "Don't worry, it's all well secured, so even if you fall, you won't crash!" "Thanks you." that didn't sound very reassuring, but he had to trust him. And that a gym leader wouldn't have an impossible challenge, that could kill the challengers. Or at least not a second gym leader. He heard Clair for Johto was one to most likely get someone killed, with how her gym is constructed. With encouragement, he approached the wall properly and grabbed the lowest nubs. Nothing indicated that they might crumble under his weight, so he pulled upwards, to the next one. He wasn't exactly worried about falling, more if his leg will keep up - it didn't seem like it will cause real issues, but who knows later in.
They were definitely not a skilled climber, but thankfully this one didn't require high skill and experience. Otherwise it would be unfair to average trainer, regardless of age, right? The real difficulty should come in form of leader's Pokemons, not the obstacle one have to go through to even get to them, after all. But they were taking their time climbing, not wanting to overstep and lose progress. They could tell the assistant was watching them from below, as if making sure they aren't in danger, even though they weren't looking down. It seemed like a bad idea to do so. Eventually, after painfully long climb, Avalon reached the top. He pulled himself up one last time. and got reasonable distance away from the ledge to sit down and catch a breath. After a moment, he looked around and immediately spotted another person on the 'field'. It definitely must been the gym leader, based on the specific outfit and the fact he was on top of the structure. "Greetings, challenger." the man spoke as he spotted them, regarding him calmly. "Do you need a moment?" "No no, I'm fine." he shook his head slightly, not wanting to get too lightheaded from the climb and all. A little break was welcome, though, and slowly he got up. "I'm ready to fight." "Alright. You are welcome to take a break after the battle, before climbing back down." the man tilted his head for a moment, as if wanting to emphasis on that. He very much figured that out already, but that did confirm his worry that this was the only way up and only way down. "That being said, I'm Grant, Cyllage's gym leader. Let's get in the positions, if you are ready."
Avalon did took a moment to get untangled for the most part off the rope, but didn't took it off completely. Just so it doesn't get wrapped around his legs too much. And then got to the right spot in the battlefield. "Ready." "Very well." Grant said back, taking his spot also. And then took one of two PokeBalls from his belt. "Amaura!" The Pokemon looked a bit goofy, with the huge eyes and multi-colored frills. It was also nearly pure white, with crystals on its body. Was it part Ice type? So he did seem to have good counter against commonly used types. That was definitely going to be troublesome, as that was literally all he got on himself for the gym battle. Maybe he should had spent more time on the preparations.. but now it was too late to just turn back, so he took a PokeBall of his own. "Fern!" The Breloom bounced from one foot to another, not being as startled by the battle like Grovyle, even though he wasn't very rowdy either. He eyed his opponent, and vice versa, waiting for commands. And he decided to go first, since the move itself was fast. "Start with Mach Punch!" It was a bit cheap to use something like that, but with Breloom's ability and all, it would be a waste not to. And it was good move to test the waters, especially when the leader shot back. "Take Down!" It seemed like a peculiar choice, given the recoil. Fern stood his ground and prepared his own attack, just as Amaura lunged at him, leaving a shiny, snow-like trail behind. So, that was the trick - it wasn't a Normal attack, like it should. Unfortunately, the Pokemon was really fast, despite not looking like that, and he had no time to shout more commands. Breloom ducked just in time and landed the Mach Punch directly in Amaura's jaw, but that unfortunately wasn't enough to stop the charging dinosaur, who shoved him several feet back. The Pokemon stepped back, shaking a bit from the recoil, but it was still standing. Unlike Fern, who barely managed to move a 'finger' after falling down. Well, at least he did manage to hit Amaura, even though his turn was short lived. "Alright.. good work. Return." they recalled their fainted Pokemon, sighing. That was very unfortunate, but also.. leader's choice confused them a bit. "Wasn't that wasteful? The recoil." They could tell Grant looked at them a little surprised, but that quickly changed as he shook his head. "Could be. But sometimes it's better to take the high risk, for high rewards. And getting one or two Pokemons out, at the cost of one, is at times necessary." That was a fair observation. Despite the huge recoil, it seemed like a great way of thinning challenger's team, if it had only one type. It wasn't good for him, though, since he had a problem now. The Amaura was weakened and won't be able to use many Take Downs, but it could still deal quickly with majority of his team. He didn't want to climb all the way up again, so he hoped Grant had no more surprises. "Allegra!" He knew there was a risk she might get scared, from fighting again and a foe like this one, but he knew Amaura was weak to Fighting and she was the last Pokemon knowing moves like that. Grovyle really looked nervous, being forced to face the ice dinosaur, even though it was clearly injured and one attack will knock them out. "Attack it with Drain Punch!" "Aurora Beam!" that wasn't quite what he expected. It wasn't nearly as strong as Take Down, but maybe Grant didn't want to knock out their Pokemons at the same time? He definitely couldn't be going easy on him, right? Surely not, especially since his Pokemons were faster and Amaura shot out a rainbow-colored beam out of its mouth a lot faster than Grovyle leaped with glowing fists. The beam wasn't exactly solid and didn't knock Allegra, as it kind of covered her momentarily, but it did affect her momentum. She tripped, obviously hurt, and needed a moment to get back up. Thankfully Amaura didn't do anything in the meantime, clearly exhausted from the previous attacks, and then it was just a matter of time for the Drain Punch to reach it at nearly full force. This time it was enough for the Pokemon to be forced back and down, and after its frills completely collapsed, Avalon exhaled. Leader's first Pokemon was finally down.
"Good job, return." Grant withdrew his fainted Pokemon, and they started to wonder what kind of ace does he have, if the first Pokemon already gave them trouble like that. Some second leaders already had fully evolved Pokemons.. not counting ones like Viola that just happened to have bugs that just evolve fast. But they didn't quite wanted to deal with a fully powered Rock type. "Tyrunt, your turn!" This Pokemon looked a bit more serious than Amaura, but still relatively on the smaller size. It looked more like a proper dinosaur, too. But there was a ferocious glint in its eyes, that they generally associated with Dragon types. That didn't quite bode well for them, but also gave additional way of dealing with it - in the form of Whimsicott. But he still hoped Grovyle will get some spotlight, despite the injuries. "Attack it with Drain Punch!" "Bite!" compared to previous moves, that one seemed ridiculously simple. But it was definitely a trick, because Tyrunt bolted forward on its stupidly big feet and made it to Allegra long before she could charge her attack. It sank teeth into her arm and then effortlessly shook her around, despite the obvious size difference, before tossing her aside. That went definitely too quickly, and it would be comical, had it not been for the fact his Pokemon fainted as a result. At the very least, it didn't seem like Tyrunt had any special moves, even though the Bite seemed stronger than it should. But Avalon wasn't as nervous about it as before - he had Whimsicott, after all. He forced himself to relax, even a little, as he withdrew Grovyle. "Alright, return. Clover, take over!" Tyrunt grimaced and bared his teeth at the Whimsicott, while its trainer looked like he was contemplating something. Maybe the Pokemon did had a trick up its sleeve? But whatever that was, Grant decided against using it. "Use Bite again!" "Moonblast!" Clover floated a bit aimlessly, but he still couldn't get away from Tyrunt's maws. Thankfully, Bite didn't hurt him as badly and was able to push his opponent back with one accurate Moonblast. His fluff looked a bit ruffled from the grab, but didn't seem to cause any actual pain. He fluffed up and wobbled up and down, while Tyrunt got back up on its feet. "Moonblast again!" "Bite it back!" it really seemed like the Tyrunt lacked moves that could efficiently harm Clover, and such the battle was pretty much over. Not even flinch could stop the Whimsicott from firing his attack, once his opponent got close and bit them in the leg. That looked like it hurt, even if not from typing perspective, before the blast pushed Tyrunt away again. It hit the dinosaur right in the head, successfully stunning it, before it ultimately collapsed.
It seemed like they both were holding their breaths, waiting with anticipation for Tyrunt to get up, but it didn't seem like it was going to happen, and eventually Grant withdrew his Pokemon. "Very well, you have won." They weren't exactly sure why they were expecting him to have one more Pokemon. Bugsy also had only two, at least during the first battle. But maybe different regions have slightly different rules? Well, it didn't seem like it so far. "Yes, and.. if the only way down the same as up?" "Well, yes." the man responded with a short, good natured laugh, as he began prepping the rewards. "It should be easier, since you can just slide down on the ropes. Just be careful to not get your hands burned." That wasn't very reassuring, and he wasn't exactly worried about the rope-burns. But fair enough.

sharkeep"Here's your Badge before you make your way down though," Grant nodded, holding out his Cliff badge for the victor. "Come by any time, if you want another go at rock climbing. It's one of the best work outs, and just plain fun too," he offered, he welcomed anyone back or anyone who wanted to give their climbing skills a go. What a way to get a full body workout! "And don't be a stranger if you ever want a rematch too, yeah? Amaura and Tyrunt aren't all I've got rumbling around here!"
Avalon has received: Cliff Badge TM 048 Rock Tomb Old Rod 2nd Consecutive badge + 28 exp split between Breloom, Grovyle, and Whimsicott

"Every time I see the light I'm falling deeper in debt" * Avalon Brightburn *
It was a bit stressful, but he did win, after all. Grant could still reject it, like he heard Clair in Johto tended to do, but it didn't seem like it. After a moment, the gym leader handed them the badge and other rewards, before bidding farewell and showing them an easy way down. Well, as easy as it gets, really. Avalon was tired from climbing back and forth, and the stress that accompanied him during the battle. So he gratefully let the gym assistant take off climber's gear off him and then send Slither Wing out to help him ride back down to the city. And maybe even all the way back to the Pokemon Center? Maybe not, he wasn't that tired.. but first they need to get down."If I've never seen the good how can it come to amend"

"Every time I see the light I'm falling deeper in debt" * Avalon Brightburn * With Ailes' help, they got back down to the city. It was intriguing that the Rock type gym was carved into the mountain, but it was a huge pain in the ass to get in and out of it. He sighed in relief when they reached the ground levels, and was able to get off Ailes' back. He could ride all the way to Pokemon Center on them, but it did look a bit weird. And he didn't need more attention than having the Slither Wing out like that. Avalon stretched and then withdrew their Pokemon, before taking the turn towards the Pokemon Center, to get some well deserved rest."If I've never seen the good how can it come to amend"
