Ilex Forest

Lirio walked into the forest and enjoyed the refreshing air it had to offer. He inhaled deeply and took in all the scents in the air. After walking for a bit, he sent out Amaryllis to not only enjoy the scents but also to help him with something. “Okay, A=maryllis, come on out!” He said aloud.

She appeared out of the Pokeball and smiled at him. “This is the forest near my home. I spent a lot of time here as a child exploring. You’ll get to see my house when we go back later, but for now, I wanted to train some of our new allies and old here in the forest. Could you use Headbutt on… that tree there!” Lirio said, pointing at a tree several yards away.

Amaryllis gladly began to prep and rush towards the tree. However, when she neared the tree, Lirio saw a familiar blue flash of color in the upper branches. He was about to stop her from using the attack, but she was already too far into using the attack to stop and turn back and he didn’t want to distract Amaryllis. The tree shook and wobbled from the attack and a large blew Pokemon began to fall from the tree, but then used its wings to soften its fall.

Unsurprising to Lirio, the Pokemon was a Heracross. More surprising to him though, was that it was not angry that it had just been knocked out of the tree. In fact, it was acting rather friendly, walking right up to him and attempting to shake his hand, which he obliged. As Lirio shook the giant beetle’s claw, he noticed something oddly familiar about this Heracross. Suddenly, a thought came to him that it might have been the same Heracross he helped before leaving on his journey, so he asked it, “Do you, remember me?”

The Pokemon stopped shaking his hand and nodded its head emphatically before trying to hug him. Amaryllis saw this and thought it might be trying to attack Lirio, so she came over and was about to attack the Heracross when Lirio stopped her and said, “It’s okay, Amaryllis. This is a friend of mine from before I met you. I am pleased to see he is doing well!”

Amaryllis calmed herself for a moment and neared cautiously. The Heracross then began to reach for the Pokeballs at Lirio’s waist. “Oh, did you want to join us? I have a special ball in my backpack that might make this easier.”

Lirio took out the Sport Ball he had in his backpack and showed it to the Heracross who immediately tapped the button on it. The ball shook for a moment, but then the Heracross was ejected from the ball. “I guess that didn’t work. Guess we will have to do this the old-fashioned way. How about a little sparring match between you and my Pokemon? That should help you stay in a Pokeball easier.”

Heracross nodded and flew several feet away to prepare. “Alright, Amaryllis, now you may attack the Heracross!”

Amaryllis nodded and readied a Headbutt attack. The Heracross also lowered its head and the two Pokemon crashed heads together, with the Heracross seemingly using a Horn Attack. Both Pokemon were sent backward from the other’s attack. “Alright, let’s try again!” Lirio said as he threw a Pokeball at the Heracross.

This time the ball shook for a little bit, then stopped after a few shakes, indicating a successful capture. Lirio walked up to and picked up the Pokeball, then released the Heracross from it who happily hugged Lirio. “Alright, now let’s get you two healed up. You two weren’t kidding with those attacks!”

Lirio went around and introduced each of his Pokemon to the others. However, he had some trouble when he got to Sneasel, Heracross, and Pinsir. The trouble was that he hadn’t actually given them nicknames yet. Fortunately, Lirio didn’t take long to think of a suitable name for each of them. For Sneasel, he decided to name her Cressa, in reference to the crescent-like claws her species has. Cressa still acted a bit shy but seemed to greatly appreciate the new name despite whatever name she may have been called by her original trainer. Pinsir was named Barbara, which could be shortened to Barb, due in part to the prickly nature of her horns. Although she was thankful for the name, she seemed to prefer Barbara a bit more than Barb.

Heracross’ name was a bit trickier to come up with until Lirio decided to give him the electric generic TM he had to teach the Pokemon Zap Cannon. Once Heracross tried out the move, using his horn to focus the electric ball of energy at a tree, the name came to Lirio naturally. Lirio decided to name him Thorin. Thorin was proud of his name and seemed to respect Lirio’s choice of name. Much to everyone’s surprise, however, baby Aurum seemed to take a liking to the attack used by Thorin. In fact, Aurum seemed to like it a bit too much and managed to use the attack itself unexpectedly, causing a small explosion in the middle of the group. Fortunately, nobody was hurt more than minor scs and the attack had gone straight up into the air, allowing everyone some time to react before the ball of energy hit the ground.

“Okay, Aurum, we’ll work on having you focus that power… Although, after seeing that, I am a bit hesitant to also teach you Flamethrower as I had planned. We’ll just have to practice with it. Here is the TM and also an exp. share so you can get stronger without fighting quite yet,” Lirio said, being wearily optimistic about the situation, “Now, we need to train so that we can battle Bugsy and get the second badge of the Johto region!”

Upon hearing this, Lirio’s Pokemon cheered in excitement. “I’ll return whoever is not training right now just to manage everyone better. Amaryllis, I’ll need you out all the time though as your Headbutt attack will help us find Pokemon in the trees, okay?”

This was music to Amaryllis’ ears as she enjoyed spending time with Lirio and thought it was nice to be with him, so she let out a happy sound of agreement.

Amaryllis nodded with excitement, happy to be helping Lirio with this training. She used headbutt on another tree and, from it, an Aipom barely managed to catch itself from falling out of it. “Alright, Kanan, come on out and use Drain Punch!”

Kanan used the attack, hitting the Aipom spot on and knocking it out in one hit. Kanan flew down to the knocked out Aipom and then down at his hands. Lirio saw this and walked up to him with a smile before patting his head. “I guess you’ve gotten stronger than both of us realized. Good job, Kanan! Although, I suppose that means we should let others train more then. You can rest,” Lirio said to Kanan before returning him.

“Alright, Amaryllis, time for another tree!”

Lirio and Amaryllis looked around for a bit for an acceptable-looking tree. After walking around for a little, Lirio saw a tree that held promise and told Amaryllis to Headbutt the tree. She did as commanded and a Tangela deftly caught itself with one of its vines to prevent it from falling to the ground. Much like the other Pokemon, it was a bit annoyed by the intrusion and began to head towards Amaryllis. “Thorin, stop the Tangela!”

Thorin quickly flew to block an oncoming attack from the Tangela that was aimed at Amaryllis. “Now, counter with Aerial Ace!”

Thorin sent the Tangela quite a ways back with its impressive strength, but the Tangela kept its footing, being quite nimble. It sent out some of its tendrils to bind Thorin, catching both the bug Pokemon and Lirio off guard at first. Unable to free himself, Thorin struggled in the vines. Lirio thought for a moment of how they could escape this situation before calling out an action, “Thorin, shock the Tangela with Zap Cannon!”

Thorin charged the attack and zapped the tendrils of the Tangela, zapping and knocking it out. Now free from the vines, Thorin went back to Lirio who gave him a pat on the head. “That Tangela was surprisingly skilled at battle… I wonder if maybe it used to have a trainer or if it has had to fight a lot in its life…” 

Lirio got a bit tense for a moment remembering his encounter with the Team Rocket members Reina, Watson, and Colby. He wasn’t sure why, but he couldn’t shake off a bad feeling that came on suddenly. Nonetheless, Lirio tried to ignore this feeling and played it off to his Pokemon, saying they should train some more.

After only a little while of searching, Lirio realized that he suddenly began to hear the cries of a feminine voice coming from within the forest. He stopped suddenly and his Pokemon stopped as well. They all listened for a moment. Lirio confirmed that there was a wailing voice coming from somewhere in the forest. “Did you all hear that voice earlier?” He asked Thorin and Amaryllis.

Both of them shook their heads. He thought it was odd that neither he nor any of his Pokemon had noticed it before. He stayed motionless for a moment longer to discern from where the voice was coming from and, once he had done so, continued at a faster pace towards the direction of the voice. Amaryllis and Thorin hurried along behind him. As they traveled, though, the forest plants became more densely grown and it became difficult to traverse. That being said, Lirio knew they were going the right way as the cries became louder and easier to hear.  Suddenly, however, the densely grown undergrowth and roots cleared to a short dirt path that gave way to white flowers in a clearing.

Lirio, Amaryllis, and Thorin followed the path and were amazed by the beauty they saw. The area of the forest they were in was teeming with life, with lots of forest Pokemon and flowers all around. For a moment, they had forgotten about the cries as they took in the sight until Lirio saw a patch in the center of the clearing with wilted flowers and a small creature with flowers on its back. As they neared the center, Lirio recognized the creature as the legendary Gratitude Pokemon, Shaymin. However, he could tell something was wrong with this one. Not only were the flowers around it wilted, but also the ones on its back were closed and it was crying into its front paws into the soil.

Lirio was about to call to it once they were several feet away so as not to startle the Pokemon, but instead, the Shaymin lifted its head as it heard them approach and called to them. "Have you come to help me?" She asked in a hopeful voice, which sounded rather mature yet stricken with grief.

This contrast to the cries Lirio and his Pokemon heard caught them off guard at first. The Shaymin glanced over Lirio, Thorin, and Amaryllis before quickly realizing who she was looking at. Lirio was about to respond when the Pokemon once again spoke suddenly. "Yes! You're Lirio Mushikaze, I have heard word of your travels. You are a friend of nature, and if you truly are please help me." She pleaded with the young male, as another tear streaked down her face. 

Lirio and his Pokemon were once again shocked by the Pokemon, this time at the fact that she seemed to know who Lirio was. Unsure what else to say, Lirio began to say in a formal tone, “Yes, I am Lirio Mushikaze. You seem to be in trouble, therefore, I will help you even though I do not yet know what you need help with. I would gladly help you knowing you bring so much life to this world. I thank you as well for letting us see the beauty of this part of the forest as well as gracing us with your presence.”

She got up and moved towards Lirio, however, as she did the flowers began to die and wither as she neared them. "One of my good friends has been taken by horrible, horrible people, who intend to sell her off to poachers." She explained as her eyes watered again, her voice shaking as she explained what was going to happen. "I believe these people call themselves Team Rocket, or some branch of them." She informed shaking her head. "If that was enough... They plan to build a base here in this forest... Destroying my friend's home as well as countless other Pokémon's home..." She explained, desperate to get all her words out. "Please, will you help my friend?" She begged, looking him directly in the eye.

“Get ‘em, Zubat!” Christian yelled as he threw a Pokeball in the direction of Lirio and his Pokemon.

“Drowzee, you come out here too!” Justin yelled as well as he too threw out a Pokeball.

“Cressa, I need your help! Thorin, you too!” Lirio called out as he threw out a Pokeball and pointed for Cressa and Thorin to combat the enemy Pokemon. “Thorin, use Zap Cannon on the Zubat! Cressa, use Triple Axel on the Drowzee!”

The two Pokemon did as commanded and were eager to do so. Thorin seemed to realize how evil Team Rocket could be and Cressa was already aware of this from her experience with Colby. The Zubat was easily knocked out from the electric move’s blast, but when Cressa went to attack the Drowzee did something odd. It waved its hands mysteriously and Justin called out, “We are full of tricks!”

Lirio realized this may have been the Drowzee trying to confuse Cressa so that it could dodge the attack using its Forewarn ability, but Lirio knew that this wouldn’t work considering Cressa’s own Keen Eye ability, she’d see right through the deception. As she neared the Drowzee, it moved slightly to evade Cressa’s claw and snickered at her, however, she was prepared and snickered right back coming around from behind her with the true first hit of her Triple Axel attack. She kicked the Drowzee right in its surprised face and proceeded to pummel it two more times, knocking it out.

“Yeh, we should have been able to clobber you!” Christian added, “Let’s get out of here, Justin!”

Justin and Christian returned their Pokemon and attempted to run back into the woods, however, they were stopped by a large form that pushed them back out into the clearing.

“What are you two fools doing?! We know the Shaymin is here in this clearing! Go and get it for me or do I have to do it myself?!” Said a deep, gruff voice.

Cressa and Thorin returned to Lirio when they heard this unknown voice. From where the two Team Rocket grunts attempted to leave the clearing, a taller, largely built man stepped from out of the shadows. “Uh, sorry, boss, but this punk is stopping us from searching the field!” Christian muttered out.

“Uh, yeah, he is stronger than we thought he was and beat our Pokemon!”

“Psh! He is just a gardener by the looks of it! Let me show you foolish lot how a true Team Rocket member does it!” The larger guy said aloud, pushing the two grunts out of his way.

The largely built man reached for Pokeballs at his belt. “You all be careful! He looks tougher than the other two! Cressa and Thorin, how about you all take a break. I’ll have Kanan handle this one,” Lirio warned as he sent out Kanan from his Pokeball.

Lirio let out a sigh of relief and congratulated Cressa. At this point, there was just a little light left in the sky. Lirio sent out Ignis to light the area a bit more as he and Cressa went back to where the Shaymin was hiding. “Shaymin, the Team Rocket members are gone now! It is safe to come out. It was tough, but we handled them for you.”

As Lirio approached the center of the clearing, he could see the flowers Shaymin hid as begin to rustle, meaning she was, thankfully, still hiding there.
