A child about the age of six ran down the path leading into Ilex forest with tears in his eyes and a fear about him. In the distance, an angry yell could be heard shouting the child's name into the wind, however, no one appeared over the hill in pursuit. Relieved, Ringo Scripture slowed to a jog as the forest enveloped him. He didn't know this place and had never felt so far from home in his life. His father had brought him all the way to Johto for business and it had been hell ever since. Two days stuck with his sober, raging father in a small room in the pokemon center was more than he could bare. He'd have to pay for running off eventually, but for now he could enjoy some short-lived peace.
Ringo wandered the forest paths with no sense of where he wanted to go or what he wanted to do. He knew it was probably dangerous to be here without a pokemon, but he was still too young to have a pokemon of his own. A fact that he hated and thought unfair. At least then he'd have a friend to talk to, even if the pokemon couldn't necessarily talk back to him. It was better than being alone in this strange region. Ringo bit his lip and sat down on the root of a large oak tree, his frustration welling up inside of him. It wasn't fair. He was young, yeah, but he was sure he could look after a pokemon! The fact that he had to wait four more years in hell before he could get one and go on his journey filled him with despair. That was so long!
Ringo watched the branches above him shift in an unseen wind and tried to calm himself down, wiping away his tears with a growl of frustration. Adults were stupid! He was so tired of it!

Lirio was out in Ilex Forest being his carefree usual self. At this point in time, Lirio was often left to his own devices by his busy parents. Though he often wished they would spend time with him, he didn’t mind the freedom he had all that much. He’d often wander through Ilex Forest until sunset most days, playing with the forest Pokemon. He hadn’t been playing with them for too long this day when one of them Butterfree tapped his shoulder to get his attention. “Yes, what is it Mrs. Butterfree?” He asked curiously. Of course, the Butterfree couldn’t talk back to him, but she communicated as best she could by gesturing for Lirio to follow her. He understood her easily though and followed her through the woods. After a short walk, the Butterfree stopped and pointed towards a path just through the bushes. Lirio poked his head through the bushes to see a lone kid about his age walking along the path alone. Lirio didn’t recognize this kid, so he must not have been one of the locals. Lirio thought he may be a new friend, so he jumped out of the bush in front of the kid and yelled to greet him, “Hi! My name is Lirio! What is your name?”

At the sudden voice, Ringo jumped back into the tree behind him and let out a squeak of surprise as he knocked his head off the rough bark. Rubbing his head, he eyed the other boy with both curiosity and a little suspicion. Thanks to his feminine-like features he was often bullied by other kids back home, so he was cautious meeting anyone new his age. This boy, however, seemed OK at first appearance despite the abrupt entrance. That is, at least he wasn't acting menacing or throwing insults right off the bat.
"Hello... I'm Ringo Scripture." He answered the boy after a brief moment studying him, giving a polite dip of his head as he introduced himself. He was well aware his name was odd by most standards, though there wasn't much you could do to sound normal with a last name like 'Scripture'. Still, his mother hadn't done him any favors by naming him 'Ringo' either.
"A-are you from around here?" Ringo's gaze flitted behind Lirio as he caught a glimpse of the butterfree and almost immediately his face brightened. He had always loved pokemon regardless of what kind or type, and even a bug pokemon pulled a soft smile from him. "Oh! Is that pokemon your partner?" He didn't know what kind of pokemon it was behind the boy, having not seen one like it before in Spikemuth, but it looked both cool and cute at the same time. Almost instantly he was a little jealous of the boy, but he quickly pushed the feeling aside. It was better not to dwell on such feelings.

The kid made a startled shriek and jumped back into the tree behind him. It didn't occur to Lirio at first that hopping out of the bush could possibly have been a bad idea as he was young and naive and not fully aware of how this could scare someone. In fact, Lirio was rather surprised by the kid’s reaction to his greeting, though his Butterfree companion seemed startled as well by the shriek. The boy was quick to calm himself though and introduced himself as Ringo Scripture. Lirio could tell he wasn’t from around Azalea Town with a name like that. “Maybe it is some sort of big city name,” Lirio thought to himself. Lirio realized he should have probably introduced himself with his full name and was about to before Ringo began to ask questions to him, like if he was from around the area and then, this second one with a sense of wonder, if the Butterfree behind him was his partner Pokemon. “Oh, no, this here is Mrs. Butterfree! She is one of my friends here in the forest. Many of the Pokemon here are my friends! They watch over me and play games with me sometimes. I am from Azalea Town, but my parents are really busy, so I spend a lot of my time here in Ilex Forest,” Lirio paused then reintroduced himself, seemingly forgetting he already shouted his name to Ringo a moment ago, “Oh, by the way, I am Lirio Mushikaze, if I didn’t say that already.” Lirio took a closer look at Ringo and only gathered more evidence from his observations that Ringo was not from around there. Lirio found this odd to find another kid alone in the forest. Most children weren’t allowed to enter Ilex Forest alone, let alone travelers not from the area. He tried not to dwell on this too much though as this now meant that he would have someone else to play with. “Hey, do you want to play a game?” Lirio began to ask before Mrs. Butterfree nudged his shoulder as if to say that he should focus on other things first, “Oh, you are right Mrs. Butterfree. Uh, are you lost or something?”

Ringo's smile grew a little and he dipped his head to the Butterfree as the boy told him it was wild, yet it sounded kind. His father had always told him wild pokemon were dangerous and would attack you without reason. Yet this pokemon seemed nice, tame even. "Nice to meet you, Lirio and Mrs.Butterfree." He shifted on his feet a little awkwardly, unused to conversing with others, let alone those around his age.
"That must be nice.." He said finally after Lirio had explained he came here often to play with the pokemon. Ringo couldn't imagine anything better than that. He grinned when the other boy asked if he wanted to play a game, but it faltered a little as the boy when on to ask if he was lost. "N-no.. I'm just... um.." He stumbled over his words trying to explain his... situation. "I ran away, temporarily. I'd be up for a game."

Ringo smiled at Mrs. Butterfree and Lirio until Lirio asked if he was lost. At this point, Ringo began to awkwardly stammer on his words and didn’t really explain much when he said he wasn’t lost but had instead run away. Lirio thought the boy was acting strangely after he had asked if Ringo was lost. He meant to ask more about this until he was distracted by Ringo’s acceptance to play a game with Lirio. Lirio was elated and quickly forgot the previous awkward moment. Lirio’s voice became excitable and he spoke quickly, unable to contain himself, “Great! I would say we could play hide-and-seek, but I know all the good hiding spots, so you’d probably never find me. Instead, why don’t we play a game where we look for treasure? We both try to find the most special object we can find in the woods. I’ll let Mrs. Butterfree help you out since you don’t know this place very well. She is quite good at this game! I’ll search on my own, but that doesn’t mean I won’t ask the forest Pokemon for help!” With that, Lirio quickly bolted into the undergrowth of the forest and out of sight of Ringo before he could even respond. Lirio wasn’t used to playing very much with other kids, so this was still a new experience for him, albeit quite fun for him. Mrs. Butterfree appeared to sigh at Lirio’s lack of restraint before she decided to fly slowly in a random direction, hoping that Ringo would follow so they could play the game.

Treasure? Script grinned wider as the boy spoke of finding treasure. His situation was quickly forgotten as he jogged after the Butterfree and deeper into the woods. Here and there as they explored Ringo sensed they weren't alone. He had always been a sensitive boy, and now he could feel the eyes of more than just the Butterfree with him. His pace faltered for a moment before he caught himself and hurried along to keep up with Mrs.Butterfree. The last thing he wanted to do was lag behind in strange territory, not that he was really that worried about getting lost. If he did, so what?
He followed the pokemon as she led him through the woods, smiling a little as he noticed her occasionally glancing back to make sure he was still there. As he walked, he imagined he was ten and on his pokemon journey, gallivanting through the woods looking for pokemon! He grew even more excited as he realized the pokemon here were ones he didn't know yet! His mood was higher than it had been in what felt like forever as he jogged through the underbrush, coming to a stop in a small clearing as the Butterfree fluttered over to a stump.
Ringo followed and approached the stump, confused for a moment before he noticed something shiny lodged in the broken bark of the stump. He palmed the shiny rock and rolled it in his hand. He had no idea what it was, but it sure looked like treasure! He pocketed the odd rock and gave Mrs.Butterfree a thumbs up, following her as she took to the air once more.

Lirio was determined to find some treasure to win the game. He scurried his way to a nearby clearing where trainers passing through often camped and rested. Once there, he found a couple of the resident Paras and asked them for help, “Paras friends, have either of you seen something shiny or special nearby lately? I am on the hunt for treasure!” The two Pokemon convened for a moment to discuss if they had seen anything that fit Lirio’s description. They then called out to Lirio and began to crawl towards a spot near the center of the field with a few rocks jutting out of the ground. Lirio followed them enthusiastically, eager to find something special. Once there, the two Paras stopped at the base of one of the taller rocks. Lirio looked around but was disappointed at first when he only saw plain rocks. Then, one of the Paras dug into the ground with its claws. Lirio looked on in wonder, “Oh! This is a buried treasure! That makes sense.” After a moment of digging, the other Paras reached into the small hole and pulled out a green-colored stone. It was mossy and had a leaf imprint on the front. Lirio's eyes grew wide when he saw it, “A leaf stone! While it isn’t shiny, it is quite special! Thanks, you two!” Lirio then reached down and grabbed the leaf stone before running off as he waved goodbye to the Paras. The pair waved back to him as he disappeared back into the forest. Once in the forest, Lirio called out, “Hey, Beedrill!” Suddenly, an intense buzzing noise filled the air and several black and yellow Pokemon with red eyes flew down from the above trees. They were Beedrill, but Lirio knew they wouldn’t hurt him. In fact, he had come to learn during his time in the forest that they were quite friendly, as long as you weren’t trying to hurt their young or steal food from them. “I need you all to help me find Mrs. Butterfree and my friend Ringo. He is a kid about my age and is with her. Could you all help me out?” One of the Beedrill in front of the small group nodded before flying off in the direction Lirio could only assume would lead him to his friends. The Beedrill were fast, though, and soon became a bit ahead of Lirio. Though he had a hard time keeping up through the wooded thickets, he managed to keep them within vision.

Ringo followed Mrs.Butterfree through the trees and across a little stream, smiling blissfully as he went. Warm in his pocket was the stone he had found, or rather, his treasure. He was satisfied with their haul. Although he didn't know what it was per say, he knew it was special and had a good chance at winning him this little treasure hunt!
Ringo climbed over a fallen tree and dropped to the other side gracefully, however he paused as he straightened back up. What was that sound? A low buzzing was echoing through the trees, causing alarm to rise in Ringo as it began to grow louder. Instincts told him to run, but Mrs.Butterfree seemed unbothered by the sound so he hesitated. Surely the pokemon would give him a signal if he was in danger... right?
Ringo swayed on his feet as both the need to flee and the need to stay raged on in his mind. On one side he wanted to trust the Butterfree, but on the other... he was terrified. As a large shape flew out of the trees Ringo realized he no longer had a choice, it was too late to run. His eyes widened as he stared at the new pokemon's giant stinger. My god. Backing up until his back was pressed against the tree he gave the yellow and black pokemon a tiny wave. "Um... Hello.. Nice to meet you... I'm Ringo.."

Once Lirio got close to the Beedrill, who seemed to have stopped a ways ahead of him, he noticed Mrs. Butterfree flitting her wings just above the undergrowth. “Ah, that must be where Ringo is too!” He thought to himself. Ringo was out of sight at first because of a large shrub, but Lirio crawled through it and jumped out of the other end, pleased to see Ringo there with the Pokemon. “Ringo!” He yelled out, “I see my Beedrill friends found you! Did you find some treasure with Mrs. Butterfree? I found something quite special that I am sure will make me the winner!” Lirio stood up proudly as he held out the Leaf Stone in his hand, waiting for the awe on Ringo’s face.

Ringo stared at Lirio for a moment before looking back to the pokemon with the big stinger, the Beedrill. Yeah, that name fit. He tore his eyes away from the Beedrill and slowly relaxed, stepping away from the tree he had backed up against and approaching Lirio to look at the rock. This one he knew! "Is that a Leaf Stone? It's so pretty!" He grinned before fishing out of his pocket what he and Mrs. Butterfree had found, the Shiny Stone, before holding it out so Lirio could see it.
"Do you know what it is?" He turned the Shiny Stone around in his palm uncertainly, not aware that it too was an evolution stone. His life was hectic, and because of that he only knew the more famous evolution stones like Leaf, Water, and Fire. "I think you win!" He added with a smile, deciding that Lirio had found the better, or rather more valuable, treasure.

When Ringo showed his stone, Lirio’s eyes grew wide. He could not believe that Ringo had found a Shiny Stone. Mrs. Butterfree certainly had a knack for knowing where treasure was. However, Ringo looked at Lirio’s Leaf Stone and admitted defeat, seemingly thinking Lirio’s find was much more special than his own. “What?! No fair! You didn’t even let me have a say in who won! I say, you won! You found a Shiny Stone! It can evolve Pokemon just like this Leaf Stone, but different ones!” Lirio then turned to Mrs. Butterfree with a big grin on his face, “I see you really know where to find the special treasure! We’ll have to go looking for some sometime!”

Ringo blinked as Lirio told him the pretty stone in his hand was actually another evolution stone, and redness spread across his cheeks as he realized Lirio said he won. Ringo hadn't won at anything in his life... the thought made him feel both happy and awkward. "Maybe we both win? Whose to say what evolution stone is better?" He offered with a smile, having probably the most fun in his life. He knew it would end the moment he headed back, but for now he was happy with his new friend. However, it was short-lived. Ringo noticed the Butterfree and Beedrill shift as if noticing something, and a moment later he heard that something land behind him. Spinning around, Ringo came face to face with his father's pokemon, a Toxicroak named Venom. Immediately dread drained the color from his face as he stumbled back and away from it. "Toxi! CROAK!" Venom growled and stepped forward, running his poisoned blades together and narrowing his eyes at the boys as if ready to fight. He had been sent out to collect the son of his trainer, but that didn't mean he couldn't first have a little... fun. With a mad grin, the Toxicroak suddenly lunged forward, swinging one of it's bladed arms at the two boys with clear intent to harm them. His trainer had said the son only be alive, and he hadn't said anything regarding the second boy.

Ringo seemed happy that Lirio said he won the game. He also said that they both won in that case. The two boys were having lots of fun, but then, something felt amiss. Mrs. Butterfree and the Beedrill turned to see something behind Ringo before an intimidating Pokemon roughly Lirio’s height with poisonous claws landed right behind Ringo. Ringo’s face grew pale as he stumbled away from the Toxicroak. The Toxicroak seemed ready to fight and slashed one of its claws at Ringo and Lirio unexpectedly, nearly getting one of them. Mrs. Butterfree panicked and flew towards Lirio to try to protect him while the Beedrill’s calm demeanor quickly changed, becoming angry and now looking to fight the Toxicroak. The three Beedrill flew towards the Toxicroak and tried to attack it with their long stingers, however, the Pokemon was fast and moved out of the way in time to not be injured. This did put some space between Lirio, Ringo, and the Toxicroak though. “Hey, we were just trying to play a game! You don’t have to ruin all the fun!” Lirio called out, flustered by the sudden assault by the Pokemon. “Ringo, looks like it is time to play another game,” Lirio said, seemingly not seeing the Toxicroak as a major threat, “It is called Tag, but we don’t want to get tagged by this grumpy Pokemon!” Lirio had a serious look on his face and nodded at Mrs. Butterfree. She then sent out a puff of reddish powder in the Toxicroak’s face, infuriating it and causing it to chase her through the trees. “Mrs. Butterfree bought us some time with her Rage Powder move, so we should hurry before its effects wear off, Ringo.” Lirio grabbed Ringo’s arm and pulled him through the tangled forest floor. The Beedrill followed behind them to keep guard.

Ringo could only stare in fright as the friendly pokemon faced off with venom. Of his father's pokemon, Venom scared him the most, even though he was the smallest of them. There was just something mean about the pokemon, but Script could never bring himself to blame it either considering it had been trained by someone like his father. Before he could fully wrap his mind around it, the Butterfree had led Venom off and Lirio was already dragging him off away from Venom. The situation made Ringo feel horrible. He had just made a new friend and already he had put him in danger. "You should leave me behind and run home, Venom is after me... If you go he won't chase you." Despite himself, his voice faltered a little bit at the thought of facing Venom. Why couldn't his father have sent a different pokemon? He had three, and the other two were far more reasonable than the Toxicroak. At this rate Ringo knew he would be in a load of trouble regardless of if Venom caught him or not. "TOX!" Venom leaped from branch to branch after the annoying Butterfree, seeing red every time he looked at it. Part of him was aware his target was getting away while he chased the stupid wild pokemon, but it had no chance against the anger he felt when he looked at the Butterfree. He followed it closely, imagining ripping off it's stupid wings one by one, but as he closed in his mind suddenly cleared.
With a snarl of anger he jumped into the air and released a hailstorm of sharp rocks at the bug pokemon before landing and vanishing into the bushes, back onto the trail of the two boys. He didn't stay to see if the Stone Edge had hit or not, knowing he had already wasted enough time on the wild pokemon, and instead threw himself into his search for the boys. Thankfully, their 'guardians' had quite loud wings, and within moments he picked up the sound of their buzzing and angled himself towards the noise. The moment they came into view, they would taste his Gunk Shot!

Lirio and Ringo were running together through the woods when Ringo tried to protest that Lirio run with him. “No, I won’t let that mean Pokemon take you! You are my friend, besides. We have a few tricks up our sleeve too to get away!” Lirio replied, winking as he continued to pull Ringo along with him. After a bit of running, Lirio brought Ringo to a different part of the woods and stopped. He knew that Mrs. Butterfree couldn’t keep the Toxicroak distracted for very long, but he felt that it would be enough to give them a little bit of time. Out of breath, Lirio paused and stopped. Despite the loud buzzing of the Beedrill, he could still sense that the Toxicroak must be nearby at this point. He was about to let out a loud whistle when something in the trees caught his eye. It had to be the Toxicroak. Without thinking, Lirio pushed Ringo out of the way, causing both of them to fall to the ground but out of the way of the oncoming attack. Before getting up, Lirio whistled as loud as he could. The Toxicroak was about to examine his work when the forest began to move with activity. Lirio sat up and waved at the Toxicroak, taunting him to try to get him to attack again. It was time that the Toxicroak learn to not mess with his friends.

Ringo squeaked as he was thrown to the ground, confused for a moment before he saw a purple glob fly over his head and strike a nearby tree with an audible sizzle. He clamped his mouth shut to muffle a whimper and rolled back onto his feet shakily, his head whipping around to locate Venom as the toxicroak stepped out into the open. "Totototo...!" Venom seemed to chuckle as he found the boys again without too much trouble. The one boy was whistling constantly, a fact that irritated Venom and made him wonder if it was worth it to make the boy suffer before bringing back the son. No, he was already late as it was- His train of thought broke off as the forest around him seemed to come alive. More of the other child's wild little friends most likely.
Venom visibly sighed before turning and slamming his foot onto the ground, which began to shake wildly in the direction of the forest as Earthquake took hold. For now, he ignored the boys behind him, though he listened intently should they try to run again.

The Toxicroak used Earthquake as it slammed down from the upper branches of the forest to a few paces away from Lirio and Ringo. Once Lirio stopped whistling, he noticed the Toxicroak seemed more annoyed than anything. Rather than run, Lirio got up and pointed at the Toxicroak, “If you would have just played nicely!” This seemed to aggravate the Toxicroak, making him aim his next move right at Lirio. Just as it shot out another Sludge Bomb attack, a powerful blade of wind came from somewhere behind Lirio and blocked the attack. The Toxicroak peered around to see where the wind came from and who sent the attack only to see another one coming right at it, which it narrowly dodged. Several bird Pokemon seemed to be the first to arrive in response to Lirio’s call for aid, a Pidgeot and several Pidgey and Pidgeotto. A few of them divebombed the Toxicroak in an attempt to distract it and make some space for Lirio and Ringo to get farther back. Lirio led Ringo away a bit, but the Toxicroak was relentless, trying its best to keep up with the children despite the oncoming attacks. Lirio nodded at the Beedrill that were still following them and they dispersed, aiding the bird Pokemon in their attacks on the Toxicroak. Only after this was Lirio able to put some space between Ringo and the Toxicroak. Lirio soon came to a spot of the forest with an abnormally large red mushroom. He patted it gently before sitting on top of it and telling Ringo to hide behind it.

Ringo did as he was gestured to and hid behind the giant mushroom, torn between being happy someone was helping him for once, and the knowledge that his father was going to be furious about this. The fact that he chose Venom to get Script was enough of a sign his dad was angry. He had stronger pokemon, but none as cruel and they both knew it. "I'm sorry for getting you into in this..."Venom growled deep in his throat as he dodged the attacks from the wild bird and bug pokemon. They were weaker than himself, but they had numbers on their side. He managed to knock out two with a Thunder Punch, but it seemed like more took their place. Frustrated, Venom was forced to admit he couldn't push threw the damn things.
Eventually, Venom backed off and leaped into the trees, jumping from tree to tree to quickly vanish into the forest. His mission had failed, but he'd get the son back for this eventually.

The Toxicroak tried its best to fend off the wild Pokemon, but their numbers made it difficult for it to make any advance towards the children. Despite being stronger individually, it eventually gave up on it quest and disappeared into the canopy of the forest. “Well, I guess we didn’t need your help after all, Parasect,” Lirio said patting the red mushroom smiling, seemingly unfazed by the potentially dangerous encounter with the Toxicroak. He then turned to Ringo, who had apologized for getting Lirio involved with the Toxicroak. “Oh, it is okay. I know being out here in the forest isn’t the safest thing for kids like us, but that is why you have friends to help and protect you,” Lirio replied grinning and giving a thumbs up to Ringo. “Well, it is getting a bit late now and I am unsure if that Toxicroak will try to attack us again. I should probably get home. You’re not from here, right Ringo? Well, wherever you are staying, one of the forest Pokemon could help take us both back to town.”

Ringo gave a little smile at the mentions of friends and looked at the wild pokemon that had helped them. Considering just this morning he had thought all wild pokemon savage and mean, he was beginning to question the things he had been told. Perhaps one day he could make friends with wild pokemon as well back home. At the mention of going home Script's smile faltered a moment before he nodded and got to his feet. "R-right, it is getting late." He was terrified of the idea of returning home now that he had angered Venom, but with any luck the pokemon would be in his pokeball when Script returned. "That's ok, I remember the way." He added cheerfully, thanking the wild pokemon for their help before waving to Lirio and heading toward the town.
Mostly he wanted to put some space between them, because almost as soon as he walked out of sight a large black paw snatched him up just as he had expected. His Dad's Pangoro hoisted the boy over his shoulder and headed for the pokecenter they were staying at. Ringo's fun in the woods was over, for now.
