 Moving past the western coast of the Hoenn mainland, one would almost be surprised not to see open field and maybe hills, but instead a thick expanse of forest and trees that spans for miles north of Petalburg City. Known as the Petalburg Woods, this expanse of trees is always green and lush with plant and wild life because of the nutrients the plants get from the fertile soil and the sprays of sea water that come from the air, which is why the trees in this forest are as tall, old, and large as they are. Most trees in this forest are more than a story tall, and there are always new plants and trees growing year round because of the perfect weather conditions. The canopy of these trees aren't thick, but they are tall enough to cast shadows every hour of the day, making the forest a bit darker than it really should be, but that makes the perfect environment for most of the Pokemon that call the forest home.

Realizing it would be difficult to keep an eye on everyone, she decided to recall Piloswine, Nidorino, and Tirtouga. They didn't look pleased to be in the forest anyway. That way she could leave Treecko on her shoulder, carry Buizel in her arms, and Rowlet could fly ahead of them only to land on the branches and watch them catch up. Maybe it wasn't ideal, but it lasted until the light completely faded and she knew it was time to get some rest. She could wait no longer, but if she woke up with bugs climbing all over her, she would likely run screaming from this forest with a vow never to return.
Bearing that thought in mind to give her the tiniest bit of comfort, Katie unrolled her sleeping bag in a nice clearing she came across, able to look up at the stars and still see the treetops around the edges. It looked to her to be a portal to the stars, and that image carried her into a cozy half-sleep with Buizel curled up on top of the sleeping bag at her legs and Treecko sleeping on the grass beside them. Rowlet, however, was perched up on a tree limb with his head under his wing.

Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ She heard a strange noise, a sort of scampering accompanied by the rustling of leaves. Katie was able to convince herself it was part of her dream, until she heard Rowlet indignantly hooting in surprise. She opened her eyes sharply and looked around. Rowlet had apparently fallen from the tree, and barely managed to catch himself before he hit the ground, breaking his fall the tiniest bit but still landing painfully. No, that wasn't right...
There was the scampering sound again, and Katie could see two Pokemon running along a branch, one visibly chasing the other. Ignoring the accusatory look Buizel gave her as she climbed out of the sleeping bag and dislodged him from his sleeping spot, she ran after them. Buizel was content to curl back up on the sleeping bag, Rowlet was too sore to fly after her, and Treecko hadn't woken up through any of this. He sat there, slumbering on. "Hey, wait!" Katie Du'Mont♪ My Bartender she's from the islands, her body's been kissed by the sun. Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ Katie raced through the forest, stumbling occasionally over vines and upraised tree roots. She was struggling to keep up with the two Pokemon running above. They were quick, but when she became determined it was a whole different game. Not only was the second Pokemon chasing the first, but it seemed quite angry according to it's rude chattering. It was only when the first Pokemon jumped off the tree branch, spreading it's arms and legs and letting the membrane between them catch the wind that Katie realized this Pokemon could glide upon the air. The second, a monkey, jumped after it. Unfortunately, it didn't get far enough and fell through the air towards the ground.
The blonde ran forward, arms outstretched, panic flooding her veins. She managed to catch Aipom in her arms, he looked grateful to say the least. Emolga, the small gliding mouse, had stopped suddenly on the nearest tree and was looking down at them. Only then did she notice that Emolga was holding something. "Did... did you take that from him?" She asked the Pokemon still in the tree. It laughed, and held the item up higher. "Give it back." She scolded, and it looked at her curiously.
"I mean it, don't make me come after you." Emolga looked as though she would very much like to see that happen, but tossed the flare back down to Aipom, who caught it in his tail-hand. The monkey was quite pleased to have his possession back, and Katie smiled at him, still holding the monkey. "You two should try to get along, you're both going to have to share this forest." Aipom hopped down from her arms, and used her long tail to tap a spare Pokeball, only to disappear inside.
Emolga looked irate, and glided down to the ground and tapped Aipom's Pokeball repeatedly. When nothing happened, she tried to take off with the Pokeball. "Not so fast!" She grabbed the Pokeball out of Emolga's hands. "If you want your own, here." She pulled out another spare and handed it over. Emolga hesitated, but accepted the gift only to be immediately sucked inside of it. Katie looked down at her two new Pokemon and tried to think about what she would do with them.

Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ Katie had to get directions from the Nurse before setting off, but eventually figured out where she had to go to get to the next Gym Leader. Apparently once she got through the Petalburg Woods, and back into Petalburg City, she could take a boat across the water to Dewford Town. That sounded fun, she missed being out on the water, which she had been through most of her childhood. Maybe she'd take a break and enjoy herself out there before she started to crack down on her training. She made it into the forest just as the sun was beginning to set, but by the beam of a brand new flashlight she'd picked up, she forged her path through the forest via pale moon.

Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ Moving through the forest like this was horrible, she kept tripping over raised tree roots and hitting low-hanging branches. The fourth time this happened, she didn't even bother sweeping the leaves out of her hair. Why bother, it was just going to happen again. She decided to call out Treecko, who she could follow from a safe distance with her flashlight. The gecko was able to lead her through a rather safer path. It was only when he disappeared into the upper branches of a nearby grouping of trees that she realized it may have been a mistake. Perhaps he wasn't as forgiving as she had thought about the whole 'flying-Treecko' thing. "Hey... where did you go?" She called out into the night. -Backpack-

She muttered, her stomach growling and betraying her. "Let's get out of here though." He lead the way, occasionally disappearing from sight for minutes at a time. She was sure he was doing it on purpose, but she couldn't prove it and couldn't do anything about it. Finally she neared a place she knew to be near the exit. She returned Treecko and ran the rest of the way, no longer worried about tree roots now she was back on the path. -Backpack-

Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ Now that she had a mission to focus on, Katie wasn't so worried about the what-ifs that she had been. She was able to give all of her attention to the job - a part of why she loved being a Ranger in the first place. She walked past the first few trees, and just like that she was in a completely different environment. The sounds of the City vanished almost instantly to be replaced by the rustle of bird wings, the sounds of insects calling to the day, wind brushing past leaves all around them.
Katie had the birds flying around her to keep her company and keep her safe, but this wasn't the environment they were used to. She decided to bring in an expert who could navigate the Petalburg Woods with natural ease. Scout appeared and smiled when he realized where they were. He loved the forest! He crouched and then sprang straight up into a tree to get a bird's-eye view of exactly where they were and what was around them. Satisfied and informed, he dropped back to the ground and started leading the way. -Backpack-

Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ Katie was looking up, so she did not really see the mine field of Pokemon ahead of them. Even if she had been looking right at them it would have been difficult to take them as what they really were. They looked like piles of leaves to anyone paying attention. It wasn't until she actually stepped on one that she realized the piles of fallen, multi-colored leaves were hiding small Pokemon. It made an indignant and angry noise before shaking off the leaves and spraying toxic spores into the air. Katie, who had plenty of experience with spore-producing creatures back in Alola, instantly brought her shirt up over her nose and mouth, pressing her hand against it to provide a barrier.
Scout was about to lunge at it, but Katie was too quick. With her other arm, she fired the small top which spun around and around the Shroomish. Being so angry, it broke the glowing trail left behind by the stylus and she was forced to start over in her attempt to capture it. Finally, on her third try, the Shroomish now had a friendly nature towards her because of the capture. "Lead us through there." She ordered, pointing at the leaf-covered path ahead of them. Shroomish, able to detect where the others of it's kind were hidden, gladly showed her the easiest path to take without disturbing or waking the others. Scout did not seem pleased because he had wanted to battle, but got over it quickly enough when he realized that the Pokemon was now on their team.

Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ With a new Pokemon to travel with them, Katie let the birds fly on ahead and Aipom to swing from branch to branch, leaving her behind for the moment as she stopped to pick the Shroomish up in her arms. The small Pokemon had proven helpful in avoiding the landmines of other Pokemon - and there had been a whole lot of the little Shroomish laying around slumbering on that note. Fortunately their own temporary capture had guided them to safety. Now, as reward, she was carrying the little Pokemon forward.
Ahead, her birds met up with a flock of Swablu passing through the forest. Rowlet had to struggle to keep up with them, but both of her Swablu fell into rhythm with them. They planned to turn around after they had gone so far and return to Katie. However, back on the ground, Katie received an alert that her Swablu's timer was about to expire. She glanced up to where the birds had vanished from her sight and let out a sigh before reluctantly cutting the connection between her and Swablu.
Above in the sky, Rowlet and Swablu turned to start back, but did not realize that the now-wild Swablu was no longer with them. It wasn't until they returned to their Trainer and took stock of their surroundings that they realized what must have happened. They were sad that Swablu was gone, but it was best that it had gotten to go with others of it's kind. It had found a flock to travel and live with. Rowlet and Swablu had their own flock in Katie and her Pokemon, and they wouldn't have it any other way.

Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ The Ranger checked all of the boy's usual hang out spots, but he was nowhere to be found. With no other options, Katie walked right into the forest like she owned the place. There was not a hint of hesitation or fear on her face. A boy's life was now on the line. This mission had just escalated in severity and the risk of losing this kid to the Forest to become some twisted Phantump... she couldn't let that happen. It was difficult to see among the trees this late at night, so she brought out some of her Pokemon to help.
By Emolga's light and the guidance of Shroomish and Scout, at least she didn't walk into any trees. "Jack?!" She called to the night. The only response was her heart beating a tattoo in her ears at the sudden silence. "Jack, where are you?!" Nothing. This was a huge forest and she had no idea how she was going to find the boy. He could be anywhere. Still, all she could do was keep pushing forward and keep trying to find the boy before it was too late. -Backpack-

She called, not giving up hope. With all this going on, she didn't let herself think about how worried those Parents must be right now. Her focus had to be on where the boy was. Finding him came first, it was the most important. Finding the Pokemon could come after. Emolga froze. Katie stopped short of walking into her Pokemon, but apparently the Electric-Type's large ears had picked something up. "What is it... did you hear something?" Emolga nodded, and took off.
Following at these speeds was not easy for her with her injured ankle. In the City, she hadn't even walked with a limp, choosing instead to give off a sense of being able to do her job to both the Nurse as well as the Mother and Father. Now, though, she couldn't help it. Shroomish had to walk itself now because Katie couldn't keep up with the extra weight on top of her bag and everything else. Then Katie caught sight of Emolga's glow. She walked up behind her, catching her breath and glancing around. There was a bit of space where a fallen tree sat in an area where the trees around it spread out a bit more than usual.-Backpack-

Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ Well that was a good first step, but there was still the problem of the Silcoon and Cascoon. Just like the Shroomish they were all over the forest floor. She wouldn't be able to walk past them without disturbing them and in turn getting attacked. She had to be smart about this. With the attention of every cocoon Pokemon focused on the traitorous Wurmple, Katie had the element of surprise. She used Shroomish to send out a huge wave of Stun Spore to paralyze all of them so that Wurmple could string shot each of them one by one so that they were webbed and netted to the ground. "Jack?" She asked the boy in the tree. When he nodded, she walked through the minefield of cocoons as now it was safe to do so. "My name is Katie. I'm a Ranger, and I'm here to help you." He had seen her, with the Pokemon she'd caught, capture and chase off the Pokemon attacking him. However, with the Wurmple she captured still around, he was still afraid. "Wurmple, climb down and move towards those bushes, please." Wurmple obeyed and started off. Only when it was a safe distance away (far enough away that it would make more sense to keep moving than to turn and bother the people again) she released it back to the wild. At the same time, she released the Shroomish. It had helped out enough and had earned it's freedom. "There, they are all gone. It's safe." When the boy was finally convinced to jump out of the tree, she caught him (wincing) and set him back on the ground. "There ya go. Alright, now your turn." She said to the Pokemon still in the tree. (For story-purposes I'm leaving it as the same Shroomish but actually releasing hers and capturing a new one.) -Backpack-

Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ It was a Sentret - a Pokemon she did not believe was native to this area. It was still afraid and didn't understand that the danger was gone. She knew she would have to capture it with her stylus. It was frightened so she expected it to lash out but it seemed more frozen in fear. So the capture went off without a hitch. "There you go, come on down." She said with a friendly smile. The Pokemon seemed more relaxed, and jumped down into her arms just like the boy had. Only the Sentret was quite a bit lighter and so didn't hurt her at all upon catching it.
Now with the boy and Pokemon found and safe, she brought out a few more Pokemon to act as their guard as they moved back through the forest. Rowlet and Swablu flew above them, each going opposite directions in a circle overhead. Aipom and Emolga ran along and jumped from tree to tree. All four of these Pokemon had a good view from above and could jump into action at the drop of a dime. Meanwhile Scout walked on the right of the boy who was holding his lost Pokemon, and Katie walked on his left. -Backpack-

Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ Wouldn't you know it, just like that they were right back in the Petalburg Woods. They walked the trail for a while, but Katie eventually decided to follow a side path which had obviously been taken sparsely and by very few. She was the sort to explore what she did not know. With Taillow and Swablu flying above her and Rowlet flapping furiously to keep up with the more experienced flyers, she knew she would have plenty of warning if something dangerous was lying in wait.
Leaving a forest path is not advisable in the case of most, but Katie had grown up in the wilds and knew how to find things like water, and a way out. So as she moved deeper into the heart of this Wood, the ground became less stable and predictable. Instead she had hills, upraised tree roots, and thickets of wild bushes that caught at clothing and exposed skin. Every now and then she spotted a sign that others had come this way - a foot print, a broken branch, etc.
Even so it was not until twenty minutes later that she came across a cabin in the woods. Jeez, that sounds bad... perhaps it was simply a cottage in the forest. She opted for that one, as it sounded less 'murdery'. She realized there was someone on the porch in a chair, watching her. An elderly lady who, for the life of her, Katie could not figure out how she'd managed the walk to get here. "A Ranger!" She said, excitedly. Katie was getting some possible 'too-nice-to-be-true' vibes, as though she were going to be fattened up for dinner by an old witch in a candy house.
"Yes Ma'am, may I help you?" She asked, ignoring these invasive thoughts and walking closer. She really did seem to be a sweet old lady with nothing suspicious about her... other than where she chose to live. She climbed the few steps up to the porch and stood confidently, waiting for the request she knew would come. Everyone wanted something done, that was a universal law of being a Ranger. Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ Katie was told all about how this elderly lady made a living by all of her berry trees, but the most recent storm had damaged them all. "What I really need..." She began, thinking. "...is a fresh start. If I only had some berries, then I could grow more trees and have more berries." Katie agreed to go out into the forest, as the elderly lady was unable to get out on her own these days. "Arthritis, my dear." So the girl set out with her feathery friends in search of berries, but would they be enough? She already had an idea that what she truly needed was a local. A Pokemon native to the forest who she could use to help her find what she needed.
The first Pokemon she encountered was a Cascoon. As they were so bulky and slow, she knew they were not ideal. So she decided to battle it. Munchlax had proven effective against Taillow, so she sent it out again. Despite the bug's attempts to harden it's shell, it only took two medium-strength Metronome attacks to beat it. The search was to continue now for just the right Pokemon, even though she had no idea what that Pokemon was yet to be.

The Pokemon had done it's job wonderfully, but still she needed a Pokemon to walk around with her and fight if the need should arise. So she brought out Buizel. Until that time might arise, she picked her up and held her in her arms like a fluffy puppy dog, her legs dangling as they walked looking quite silly. The other Pokemon weren't going to dare make fun of her, however. They had seen more than once how powerful the otter could get when riled up.
Another Shroomish met her in the forest as she walked. Ever since capturing one with her stylus, she'd come to realize how useful a Shroomish actually was. She wanted one for her own, and this one looked simply perfect! She dropped Buizel to her feet and she ran forward to use that very same attack. Sure the Shroomish had tried to fight back, but it was blinded and frozen by the attack. Katie caught it up and smiled down at the Pokeball that held her new friend. TL;DR

None of them seemed like the right one. They were too slow, or too lazy, there was always something keeping them from being just right. Still, once disturbed these Pokemon did not want to leave her alone. They wanted to run her off, and get some payback for waking them up in the process. So a number of them attacked including another Cascoon. Munchlax appeared without her permission and used a Metronome attack which might have even been more powerful than the one against Taillow. Katie was stunned. Not only had it done so without being told, it seemed to really want to help now. No more tiny amounts of damage, the Munchlax was really letting them have it. TL;DR

So Munchlax did it's thing and this time it did ABSOLUTELY EFFING nothing. Katie was REALLY starting to hate this mission, but persevered because she had no choice. Munchlax tried hard a few more times before finally being able to tap that massive store of power again and literally turn that damn Cascoon into a smear. Now if there was a god in the sky above, that would be the very last Cascoon she'd encounter on this mission, and the next Pokemon she found would be a Slackoth or a Zigzagoon.TL;DR

UNTIL THE DAY I DIE As they moved in deeper and deeper, Jasper started to notice signs of wild Pokemon around. An idea occurred to him. Litten stopped when he noticed his Trainer did as well and turned back. "Litten, find some Pokemon you don't like the looks of and hit it." He ordered. Litten looked left, then right, not spotting anything. "Go on." So Litten vanished into the bushes to search. Jasper, Rex, and Lucky all sat down against trees to rest and wait for a return. "Find something I don't like the looks of?" Litten muttered. "All these Pokemon look weird." That was perfectly true. None of them were familiar to the cat - not that it had lead a very adventurous life. Apparently some bird heard what Litten had said about looking weird, and had taken offense. It wasn't going to have some stupid cat come in here, into it's home, and disrespect it. No sir, not today. It took into the air and charged.
Litten wanted to keep the bird at a distance with fire attacks, but the bird wanted to get in close and peck or claw at his fur. In the end getting in close did it no favors and Taillow was knocked out by a point-blank Ember attack tot he face. TL;DR

These were alien. He might as well have been on another planet for all he knew about their surroundings. Litten, he could tell, also didn't care for this place. He could easily provide fiery bits of light but he didn't want to run the risk of starting a forest fire... at least not with him inside of it at the time. Finally they reached the end of the forest and walked out into fading sunlight. Katie Du'Mont♪ My Bartender she's from the islands, her body's been kissed by the sun. Coconut replaces the smell of the bar, and I don't know if it's her or the rum. ♪ Munchlax was already out, so when a Poochyena jumped from a nearby bush Munchlax took up the challenge at once. Unfortunately Poochyena was tough, mean, and angry. It bit onto Munchlax, who cried out in pain and tried to run right back to Katie's arms. It even tried to blast the thing off - she could see the energy shooting from Munchlax into Poochyena like electricity but it did not budge. It kept up the chase and kept biting her Pokemon cruelly. "Enough, you jerk!" She ran forward to put herself between the enemy mutt and her own injured Pokemon. Obviously Munchlax was barely standing up and she couldn't bear to see the baby so injured. The thing managed to bite her arm before she could react properly, but that was okay. It wasn't bad, just hurt quite a bit. The little thing's sharp teeth could have taken a chunk out of her if it really wanted to. She hastily sent out one of her other Pokemon. She chose so quickly that she didn't know who it would be until Emolga appeared and sparked the thing to sleep. Katie decided to leave the angry little thing be. It could wake up and lick it's wounds without her disturbing it any further. She healed the Munchlax right up and kept looking for the right Pokemon to help her. That one had just been too mean. TL;DR
