With no further delays, Valentine continued his walk towards the city square with Oshawott on his side. His Pokemon was keeping along his usual speed very well, despite having quite short legs.. and being short in general. He could bet that otter was much faster in its more natural habitat, in the water, but Vale was still confident that he could keep up with his Pokemon. He didn't train for nothing.
As they entered the square, first thing that caught his attention was the presence of the old man and his Furfrou. All seemed normal, fine and dandy, but something about this man bothered him.. and he might never know what until he actually ask him.
Oh well.
Before going closer, he gave Oshawott two remaining Rare Candies. Why not.
He mustered enough will to get closer to the man, while remaining calm and approachable. He always remember about making good (or at least half decent) first impression. Man's Furfrou raised its head and looked at him suspiciously, but didn't made a noise or anything.
"Excuse me, sir? Do you have a moment?" Valentine asked, smiling slightly. He didn't want to frown or smile too much, there were always extremes in facial expressions he wanted to avoid.
"What is it, kid?" he said, not even looking up from his newspaper. It was a bit irritating, but fine.
"I was just wondering if we have met before?" younger man asked, keeping his head a bit low, so it doesn't look like he is staring him down.
The man paused, probably surprised by his question and then looked up at him. Vale saw his expression change for a moment, before becoming neutral (if bored) again. "That could be possible. I usually remember people I met. I believe in Accumula Pokemon Center?"
There was something really weird in old man's gaze, that Vale couldn't really decipher, but decided to nod anyways. "Yeah, I recall that. I was just wondering if you are a traveler or-"
"A trainer?" other man interrupted him and then turned pages in his newspaper. "I was, years ago. Now I just explore places I in was before, again. I think it's just a coincidence we end up in the same place."
Vale clenched his jaw slightly. Was he that obvious? Maybe his questions or expression had given it away. But if that was the case, then.. he should stop worrying.
"Well, I thought so. I just wanted to make sure." he replied calmly. "I will be going, then. Have a nice day."
Old man said nothing in return, while his Furfrou looked at him for a moment, before lying its head on its owner's lap. Well, he isn't going to interrupt them any longer."Poor George, you can kill him, but you’ll never kill his pride"

After leaving the old man, Vale wandered away, to the further north of the city. He was pretty sure this is where the gym was supposed to be.
He walked for a bit, before spotting a massive, pretty rich looking building. That must been the gym he was looking for, every other restaurant he saw was smaller and didn't had the weird.. aura. He pushed the door open, and went inside.
The inferior was already very impressive, and showing how big and rich this place was. Under normal circumstances he would probably never get to eat there, but.. with enough luck, he might get a dinner after fighting the gym leader and winning. But for now pushing it all away, and walked to the counter, where a woman dressed like a waitress was standing and writing something on her notepad.
She looked up at him, surprised but then fixed her dress and hair. "Welcome, how may I help you?"
"I'm here to challenge the leader.. or leaders." Vale said, pushing back nervousness. This shouldn't be that hard, right?
"Oh, a trainer!" the waitress clasped her hands together, looking suddenly excited. "Great timing! Please, follow me."
She left her spot, and guided him through the restaurant. And it was huge, even bigger than it looked from the inside. He saw tons of people eating and chatting, along with lots of waiters and waitresses walking around and gathering orders. Well, it was nearing proper dinner time, so of course it was a busy place. But Tia neatly guided him further, until they reached the further back part of the building, where the battle field was placed. Well, "battle field". It was more a stage, and it seemed like customers could watch the battle too.
He didn't really mind an audience, as long he will be the wining party.
"Before you get to fight one of our chiefs, you must fight me." the waitress said, as she walked to the other side of the arena. She was holding a PokeBall in her hand, and then let out a Purrloin out. Pokemon cat stretched lazily and waited for its opponent.
"Fine." he searched thorough his bag for a PokeBall, and then let out Audino out. "Sylvie, take care of it."
His Pokemon rubbed her eyes, trying to adjust to sudden light. She seemed surprised by the look of the place she was in, but after taking one look at the Pokemon before her, Audino suddenly hardened and nodded, ready to fight. Much to his and Tia's surprise, Sylvie turned out to be faster and landed a strong Disarming Voice on the cat. Frankly, he had forgotten that he gave her the Pink Bow, but it was definitely working out, since Purrloin's fur stood to the very ends. It looked startled, hurt and unwilling to fight.
"W-well.. uhm... alright! That went fast." the waitress said rubbing back of her neck awkwardly, and then she hid her Pokemon back in its PokeBall. "Don't feel too confident about beating me, though! Our leaders are pretty tough, and will take you out hard if you aren't careful."
"I would be disappointed if the main fight turned out too easy." Vale replied calmly, putting Audino back in her PokeBall.
"Now an important question. You have a starter of what type?" Tia asked, pulling out a small writing pad, probably the one waiters use in job. "It doesn't have to be Unovan starter, just it's main type."
"Water, Oshawott." Vale said, smiling slightly.
Well, even if he had told her that it wasn't a pure water type, she would probably not believe him. Maybe for the better. Surprised in battles were the funniest, after all. Unless the head nurse somehow informed the leaders about it.. for some reason. To be fair, they were important figures in the town, that should hold at least some power and such.. probably should know about strange incidents that were happening in the city. Why wouldn't authorities know about a horde of ghosts?
Anything was better than being accused of cheating, that's for sure. As if he had the power to modify his Pokemons himself.
But nonetheless, he saw her write it down and then nod.
"Cilan will see you in a moment." she said, before turning and walking into the 'Staff's Only' area.
He had a moment to think about his.. strategy, if he had one. His best bet was beating the opponent and hoping for the best.

sharkeepThe normal restaurant hustle and bustle continued, but upon the defeat of the preliminary gym trainer, the three brothers had been notified that one of them was being called for a challenge. A couple of moments had passed, but Cilan appeared just as the hostess had mentioned, and his green eyes shimmered with the smile he held on his face at coming out to meet his challenger.
"Hello there! Welcome to our restaurant! We do hope you might stay for a meal after our flavorful battle," Cilan greeted, holding a Pokeball in his hand.
"My name is Cilan, I'm the grass type specialist between us, I'm really pleased to have the opportunity to battle today," he introduced with a small bow of his head.
"You had a powerful first battle against Tia, so let's see what else you can bring to the table," Cilan nodded then, stepping forward and opening his first pokeball, calling his Lilipup to the battle field to get things started.

He waited a while, but he could be quite patient. Especially, when he knows that the leader will eventually come, and it real battle will begin. He took the time to look around more, but the arena was so plain, there was nothing else to do or see.
But then his attention was brought to the green-haired man that had entered the room. This must been the gym leader.. or rather, one of the three. Well, at least his main Pokemon type of use was quite obvious, even without knowing about the gimmick beforehand. Vale observed the gym leader, listening to him.
"I hope so, too." he said in a reply, and smiled slightly. Good dinner was definitely a good motivator. "I heard only good things about both the restaurant and the gym on its own. I don't expect to be disappointed."
Just like his friend said, Cilan sent out Lillipup as his first Pokemon, which opened few potential possibilities for his starting Pokemon. And with his team being half water type, his opponent might think he carelessly walked into a battle against someone with serious type advantage.. which might lull him into a false sense of security.
Well, Vale could also be cheap and use Tempest for her Quick Attack, but it would make the battle boring, predictable and probably annoying.
"Cliff, you are going first!" Vale said, as he send out his Mudkip. Cliff packed few useful moves and he might at least weaken the opponent, even if he was most definitely slowed than Lillipup.

sharkeepReleasing the small pup onto the battlefield, Cilan smiled when they were faced with their first opponent, and the battle was set to begin.
"Well we'll do our best then to keep up that reputation, we want to give you the best battle that we can," he commented, definitely ready to get the battle going as the Mudkip took its spot on the field across from them.
"Lilipup, let's get started! Go for a bite," the leader called, and the puppy snuffed with a yip of a bark and rushed forward on its paws with an energetic speed. The Lilipup leaped into the air upon coming into range of the opponent Mudkip and moved to make contact with its bared teeth as it came down on the water type for its opening bite attack.

Now that was a little obnoxious.
Maybe he should had expected Bite and the potential flinch.. but hey, he wasn't a seer. And as inconvenient it looked, he couldn't much about it and neither could Cilan - it was all just a random chance.
What he could do, however, was swap Pokemons. Mudkip is definitely not going to survive another Bite or any other attack, and for now he would like to save his face and grace. As brave that blue fish-thing was, he wasn't as competitive as his Marill friend, and wouldn't mind swapping out.
"I see I must make a slight change of plans. But that's alright, battles would be boring if you could expect everything." he brought up Mudkip's PokeBall. "Cliff, get back. Sylvie, your turn."
He was so damn sure Audino was slightly faster, but he could be always wrong. "Open with Disarming Voice."
It wasn't super effective or anything, but should at least do something.
(Vale withdrew Mudkip, and sent out Audino!)

sharkeepThe battle underway and Cilan getting things rolling for the challenge, his Lilipup had made a successful attack against the small Mudkip that they were facing first. He almost wanted to call out Cress so he could see the Hoenn native water type Pokemon, but figured if maybe their challenger did stick around for a meal that he wouldn't want to bother Cress while they were busy in the kitchen.
"An excellent perspective, that's the nature of a Pokemon battle and what you should look to learn from, the flavors and recipe can change any time, and it's up to you to keep cooking," Cilan complimented, knowing early on for some the lesson to learn that he and his brothers were apt on being able to assist with was the notion that one can't be prepared one hundred percent of the time, and not only that, but it's okay not to be prepared one hundred percent of the time. The Lilipup on the field had retreated from the Mudkip upon it being returned, but just couldn't quite get out of range for the vocal attack of the Audino that came out onto the field to keep the battle going.
"We're still in this Lilipup, tackle," Cilan called, and the puppy yipped again as it rushed towards the Audino, getting ready to strike with a lunge and its outstretched paws to attack.

That went a little bit better, since Sylvie was at least keeping up with her opponent. He wasn't necessarily mad at Mudkip, more so he was mad at himself for not training a little longer, but.. again, he couldn't just outsmart luck.
"That is somewhat true. Adding some spice to your life helps keeping it from falling into boredom, too." Valentine said, pondering a bit over leader's words.
His current strategy still a bit cheap and anticlimactic, but it was still more on the same level with leader's Pokemon. And required work.
"Alright Sylvie, you are doing good." he called to his Pokemon, observing her and Lillipup's movements. "Disarming Voice again."
Vale just hoped that her throat won't get too strained from all yelling. Also, he found that a bit weird that Cilan wasn't going for Bite again. Now flinch wasn't necessarily helpful, but it still seemed to be stronger than just Tackle..

sharkeepThe puppy was doing its best, Cilan was always proud of his starting Pokemon in his gym challenges, but against another sturdy normal type like Audino, there was only so much that the Lilipup could do and keep up with. It had lunged with a tackle, only to be blown back by the force of another Disarming Voice that was definitely taking its toll on the puppy, but it wasn't down and out yet.
"A life with Pokemon is never boring, and your new companions will always see to that," Cilan smiled, knowing his Lilipup had just a little bit more oomph to keep going.
"Every day is a new recipe with your Pokemon by your side, and it is such a pleasure to be able to give you a taste of what you all will be able to accomplish together," the leader commented.
"Lilipup, get in there with a bite and see what we can do," he called then, and the puppy shook out its fur with a yip, rushing forward again to lash with its small fangs, ready to strike for its next attack.

Maybe he shouldn't had thought about Bite, and then Cilan would forget about it. Eh, there were things he had no control over. But at least Lillipup was more hurt than Audino, and one more attack should finish it off.
He hoped, at least.
"Alright Sylvie, one more Disarming Voice!" he ordered, already feeling confident and sure of his victory. "This isn't the main meal yet, but you are doing great finishing off the appetizer."
After that, he probably should swap Pokemons - he couldn't tell if leader's next Pokemon would get a first free hit on her anyways, or not. And whatever that was, she probably wouldn't make it out conscious. And then.. he still had no idea how to start. On one hand he was afraid he would get called a cheater, and on another.. it would be still funny to see confusion on leader's face.

sharkeepThere was only so much that a given Pokemon could hold up against, and it was never fair to keep pushing a Pokemon past their limits, so with the final disarming voice that the Audino gave in retaliation, Cilan knew that his Lilipup was at its limit as the puppy fell over in a huff, struggling to keep up any further.
"Alright Lilipup, you did very well," Cilan called with a smile, returning the normal type to its Pokeball, the pup would definitely get its fill of a well deserved meal that Cilan was certain one of his bothers was already fixing up to show his appreciation for his partner.
"We're not down and out yet, let's see what we can do Pansage," Cilan called, letting out his next Pokemon, and the grass type monkey cheered and hollered as it came out onto the field, energetic and vivid with its bright green color.
"Vine whip Pansage, time to add the best ingredients," Cilan called, and the monkey chittered as it hopped on the ground, before two vines lashed out towards its opposition, aiming to strike the Audino.

After Lillipup fainted, he knew the real battle starts now. Sadly Sylvie didn't even have time to react, when Pansage used Vine Whip. It was rather unfortunate, as he had hoped that she will hit him at least once.
Now he had to be even more careful with his choices, especially since he didn't know what else Pansage could know. And it could be anything.
"Sylvie, come back. You did fantastic job." Vale said as he called his Pokemon back to its PokeBall. "Ophelia, it's your time to partake in the battle."
It was her second serious battle and that she will do anything she can, but he knew no matter what, he won't be disappointed. If anything, he would be mad at himself or luck.

sharkeepLetting out his Pansage, Cilan was ready to keep the battle going as he sent the monkey forward, and the grass type was able to strike the opponent Audino with a well placed Vine Whip that did just the trick to befall one of their opponent Pokemon. By nature, Cilan wasn't overtly competitive, the position that he and his brothers were in being the first gym of their region's league was to guide and educate and offer the base grounds for what working with a Pokemon team could look like. So as his challenger did need to recall his Audino, Cilan was patient.
"You're doing really well, already it's easy to tell that you've spent time getting to know the Pokemon you're training," he commented, encouraging his opponent. A Woobat was released onto the field next, and even though Cilan was encouraging, he did need to still do his best.
"We're going to keep cooking though, Pansage use Fury Swipes," the leader called, and the monkey squeaked at the mention and raced forward towards the Woobat fluttering in the air, leaping up with its paws and claws ready to strike.

Well, seemed like Ophelia's involvement wasn't going to last long. Even if she could deal great damage to Pansage, one more attack (or just lucky Fury Swipes again) and she was done. At least she tried, and he still had Pokemon to deal with weakened grass monkey.
"Hold on and counter it with Dual Wingbeat!" he ordered, believing that it will hurt Pansage, much more than Fury Swipes hurt her. She is unlikely to survive another hit, but she was already helpful enough. "You can do it, just stay focused on your target."

When Grae awoke, they got ready for the day and made sure everyone had slept well. After this, they began to set out for the day with the intent of leaving Straiton City and onto another destination. Watson informed Grae that the next city had another gym in it, or they could travel to Wellspring Cave before then to explore. Naturally, Grae decided that Wellspring Cave would be an ideal stop before the next gym, so, they headed off. However, as they began to get closer to the outskirts of Striaton City, there seemed to be loud construction noises coming from the distance. To add to this, the people Grae and their Pokemon passed by seemed to be less and less welcoming and kind. At one point, one of them bumped into Grae and turned around and shouted rather than apologizing. Grae didn’t take this personally but thought it was odd how the overall atmosphere of the place seemed to have changed relatively suddenly. Grae decided to stop someone that looked slightly less disgruntled than other passersby. “Excuse, but could you tell me why everyone coming from that direction seems to be so upset?” Grae said as they pointed in the general direction of Wellspring Cave. The young girl looked at Grae in annoyance at first, “You can’t be serious? Doesn’t everyone know?!” The girl looked at Grae’s still confused face and then realized that Grae clearly did not know what was going on, “Oh, you really don’t know what is going on! I guess I’ll tell you then. Word got out that there was a rare Pokemon hiding within Wellspring Cave. So, a lot of us trainers went to go find it. But, these dumb construction workers blocked off most of the cave because they are working on some sort of “safety measures” to make exploring the cave safer for trainers. Those fools are probably just wanting the Pokemon for themselves. If you really want to have a look, be my guest, but I am tired of this waste of time!” The girl then stomped off. Grae looked at Cei, “We should still at least try to check out what we can of the cave since we were planning to go there anyway.” Cei nodded and they all continued to Wellspring Cave.

sharkeepWhile they had managed to get in a good first strike with Pansage's insatiable energy, the opposing Woobat was just a bit too tough for the grass type, type advantage at its finest really if Cilan were to say so himself. It was good to learn those lessons early on, and it seemed that his challenger had a good idea on how to use moves effectively with his Pokemon on an already effective level. Cilan smiled, returning his Pansage, knowing the battle was won, nodding to his challenger as he put the Pokeball away.
"A tasty victory if I should say so myself," he commented, motioning to Tia then who was to get the badge prepared.
"My brothers would say the same, you do have what it takes to start going far with your Pokemon, league or otherwise. Keep up the bonding that you've done so far, and always trust that your Pokemon will work with you as a team when they see you as their friend," the leader spoke, smiling again as Tia moved forward to grant the Trio Badge for the victory.
"Please, stay for a meal if you'd like! It's well deserved for you and your Pokemon!"

To be perfectly honest, he expected it to go for a bit longer. But he wasn't going to complain about victory, of course. He won fair and square, oddly enough. And he didn't even have to use Caspian and his new typing.. in a way he felt bad for his starter, but on the other hand he avoided possibly awkward situation with explaining Oshawott's change. Maybe another time.
But Vale felt relived - he had won his first gym battle, and it didn't went horribly wrong. Sure, he had to rearrange his strategy and Cliff fell victim of bad luck, but it still went good.
"Fantastic job Ophelia, you deserve rest." he said first to his Pokemon, putting her back in the PokeBall. She was still hurt, even if she had won. Pansage's Fury Swipes hit her pretty hard and it's a miracle she made out in one piece. But she did it - she won a serious battle again the gym leader's ace. He was proud of her and all of his Pokemons.
"I agree. That was a great battle, mister." he then turned to Cilan. Well, it was probably tactful and appropriate to address him and compliment. Good first impression was important, no matter how cheesy it was getting. "I wouldn't expect anything less than professional from a renowned chief."
He took the badge and other items, and nodded with gratitude.
The battle made him hungry, if not for more action then for well prepared meals. Maybe both. For now he wanted his Pokemons to rest, but also to eat something good as well - as a prize for their hardship. Vale wasn't a fussy eater, unless it was including something too spicy for his tastes - only then he would complain.
"I will gladly stay for a meal." Valentine said then, letting Tia guide him to the proper dining area, and handed him their menu. There was a lot to pick from, and he had time.. hopefully.

It didn't take him too long to make the order. At this point he would gladly eat anything, but still picked the last spicy-looking dish and then something for his Pokemons too. He hoped they will all behave in there, but especially Blitzle. He believed in the others to behave, even Nixie, but Tempest was very.. active and curious. But soon enough Tia came back with his ordered meals, and first placed his' on the table and then arranged the one for his Pokemons.
"Bon appetit!" she said cheerfully, before leaving to continue her usual job and potentially greet another challenger. You never know with gyms.
Valentine nodded in response and then looked at his meal. It was warm, prepared with incredible care and professionalism. Well, they weren't called great chiefs for nothing.
He took his sweet time on eating, enjoying it and letting his Pokemons take time too. They all stayed together in one place, with Audino keeping eye on Blitzle and preventing her from running off like before. For now she seemed too focused on the food to try anything, and it was good. At least they weren't troublesome.
The meal took them as long as they wanted, and at the end Vale felt really full. That definitely will keep him sated for the rest of the day, and he still planned going to the next town today. He had no idea how far another town was, but still.. he was allowed to hope it wasn't too far, right? But he still waited patiently to take the plates from him, and Vale was ready to show his badge to ensured that he doesn't have to pay for it. But apparently it's widely known in the restaurant when there is a challenged and if they win or not. At least that was easy and simple.
He gathered his Pokemons back to their PokeBalls and left the building. The day was still bright, and sun was shining through the clouds, and he assumed he still have time to travel."Poor George, you can kill him, but you’ll never kill his pride"

The walk from the gym to the Pokemon Center was a bit tedious, and by the time he arrived it was getting late. And since the Center was quite far from the city gate, he began doubting that he will make it to the next city today. He wasn't so sure about walking in wilderness and unknown city at night, but.. the earlier he get used to it, the better. Besides, he wasn't alone and had instead full team of Pokemons to defend himself, just in case.
Vale entered the Center and immediately went to nurse's counter and got his PokeBalls out. She looked at him and nodded, taking them and placing on the machine.
"How is your Oshawott doing?" she asked, while the machine was working.
"He seems fine, like nothing really changed." he answered, with slight shrug. "I wanted to test him in the gym against Cilan, but I ended up not using him. I don't even know how would a gym leader react to it."
"I assure you, that wouldn't be the strangest thing that had happened." nurse waved her hand slightly. "Besides, your Pokemons is nearing evolution. But if you had beat the gym leader, I'm assuming you are leaving?"
"Well, yes. Possibly today, too." he said, rubbing his chin. He didn't know Caspian was almost ready to evolve. It was weird, really. He just got him few days ago, and evolution was probably most normal and expected thing that had happened recently, but.. it was still hard to believe how fast he had grown.
"Nacrene City isn't too far, but just expect the journey to take more than an hour. There is quite a lot dense bushes along the way, and a stray patch leading more towards the mountains. It's not hard to get lost." she explained further, and then handed him the PokeBalls. "Either way, Nacrene isn't much bigger than Striaton and Pokemon Center is very easy to find."
"Well, thanks you. For help and everything." he took the PokeBalls, and then went to get the rest of his stuff from the room. Upon returning back down to the hall, he handed the nurse the keys and then after bidding his last farewell, left the building.

He was debating whether or not look for Tristan and tell him that he is leaving, just to ensure that blonde won't be looking for him there and probably feel bad about it. But he didn't really want to go back to his home, as it seemed.. a little inappropriate. Instead, he decided to write him a simple SMS.
Just as he was typing, someone tapped his shoulder and it made him jump in surprise. Normally that wouldn't startle him, but he was focused on something else and it made him almost toss his phone.
Rude.
The man behind him was a bit shorter, with medium teal hair and green eyes. He had a scar on his left cheek, and wore some typical, leather jacket. The strange eyed Vale up and down, and he couldn't help but scowl in return.
"Relax, I want nothing from you. But my friend does." he said, his eyes shining with amusement. "You know Basil, right? We have seen you around him recently."
"I- Well, not too well but yeah, I do know him." Vale replied, still eyeing the man with distrust. "If he wants something from me, then why won't he show up instead?"
"He's busy. And you seem like you are leaving." teal-haired man pointed out, and then handed him a bag. "He wanted to give you few trinkets, that's all."
Vale blinked in surprise but took the bag from the man. "Thanks.. you? Or rather, thanks to him. Send him my regards."
"Sure thing, doll." the other man said with a snicker, and before Valentine could react, he turned around and left.
He wasn't actually that bothered by the way he was called, though.
He shook his head, and walked ahead, checking the bag in the same time. There were revives, some weird drink (probably for Pokemons) and a golden leaf. A hell of a 'gift', but he wasn't complaining. Among it all there was a piece of paper, with a phone number on it. He could only assume it was Basil's, but.. it was nice. In a strange way. He still remembered about what Tristan told him, but decided to be the one to judge.

Dana had been able to finagle her way into a plane ticket, but her fortune stopped cold when she tried to board with her Pokemon all out. She tried to insist that they didn't need to be in their balls until she realizd there wasn't a way for her to justify it. Many Pokemon comfortably lived in balls and some needed it as a sort of security blanket. They were not harmful to their occupants. She still tried to contend and got away with letting Mannchen stay outsince he was an Audino and seemed to be taking care of her. With Mannchen in tow and Dana now allowed to board the plane, she settled into her seat and excitedly waited for the trip to Discovery Island!Partners:
