Professor Sonia's Laboratory

Ok, I remember this part of the story more vividly as it all happened a couple of hours ago. That, and the excitement of the event along with the hype given by literally everyone who knew what I was going through. Is getting a Pokemon really this meaningful? After the past three days' worth of travel, I came to realize that yes… yes it is. It is the chance to get yourself a new friend. A friend who will be by your side despite adversity. One where both the trainer and the Pokemon can develop a mutual understanding, and, over time, strengthen a bond greater than a friendship. It is a friend made to make your life more bearable, more enjoyable, more dynamic, more facile, and all with somebody you can count on. It's that simple! The more I think about it, the more it sounds like I am marrying somebody…and now I am sitting in a chair at a bachelorette party. It is time to choose. 

Bea directs me towards the door. Considering the midsummer heat and my anticipated nervousness, my dampened hands got hold of the handle and opened the slippery door. The sight of the laboratory was grand and spacious. My eye was distracted as it scanned every detail in the room. Towards the back was some glassy compartment, something that seemed like a terrarium. I was curious if they were taking care of some delicate mon in there. Next to it was an extensive library with a purple-haired boy, a little younger than me, sorting through some books. He was startled a little by the unexpected presence of new guests but turned and welcomed us in. “Could've called in advance, you know?” the boy smiles "What's up Bea?”

“Well, I just came from a trip to Unova and I had a blast! Anyway, I promised Sonia I would bring her some souvenirs and information regarding Dynamax in other regions,” says Bea.

“Where is she anyway?” I asked, interrupting her, thinking I would be meeting with the Pokemon professor and not some boy. Immediately I pulled back, noticing how rude I was to both him and Bea. How embarrassing. 

“She was invited to this place called “Discovery Island”. She agreed to it, thinking she could get more info about the Dynamx phenomenon, soo…. she’s going to be gone for a couple of days. My name is Hop by the way. What's your name?” says he. 

“Andrew Forger, nice to meet you,” I say while maintaining a formal yet friendly composure. 

“Alright! I understand why Bea is visiting, but why are you here? What brings you to the lab?” Hop says while breaking his formality and showing his inner child. I tell him I am traveling with Bea in the hope of getting a new Pokemon. He looks happy to hear that. He then tells me how fortunate I am at the moment, considering how he had three starters set up for the upcoming Galar league. Hop walks away for a second and brings it back with a nice-looking box. Inside are three Pokeballs and tells me I can choose between a Grookey, a Sobble, and a Scorbunny.

Without hesitation, I looked him in the eye, took a deep breath, and said: Scorbunny.

Before I (or anyone really) knew it, a red beach ball flew across the laboratory and crashed on Hop, knocking out the fancy-looking box along with the starting items he was going to give. The box fell on the floor, causing the Pokeballs to escape and the starter Pokemon to be released from them. Hop was on the ground from the impact that made him lose his balance. The surprise made him stagger on making any further action but quickly went on to recollect the items that flew off his hand. Bea and I couldn't do much about the situation aside from just spectating. But, in the midst of the mess, the starters came out posing with their personality, displaying all their attractive features to their best extent. I saw it… I finally did. For the first time I managed to see the beauty of a Pokemon, and now, more than ever, I really wanted one. The anticipation for it made me jittery with excitement… my supposed soulmate was only a few meters away! But this feeling of bliss was interrupted by the angry (maybe jealous) Meditite standing at the door. It was giving me and the events behind me a hard thousand-yard stare, appearing as if it had just sprinted a mile out of anger. He seemed very Worked Up. The starters then noticed the threat and stopped showing their glamour, changing their appealing faces to their “game-on” faces. 

The grass starter took out his twig from his head, held it in his hand, and yelled in anger preparing to attack.The shy Sobble staggered in fear, unable to do much during the situation. Scorbunny was the only Pokemon to take immediate action, retaliating the attack by kicking the beach ball back to the Meditite. The ball slammed the Meditite’s head, pushing him out of the laboratory and bringing him to the ground. Out of instinct, I commanded the Scorbunny to tackle the Pokemon and keep it on the ground. A basic wrestling victory: keep the opponent’s back to the ground. Bea noticed my fighting ability and realized it was the ideal occasion to catch a Pokemon. She hands me a pokeball and orders me to throw it at the Meditite. I wasn't sure what that would do at first, but I did as I was told without question (a student-to-teacher kind of reaction). The pokeball hit the Meditite, and the pokemon got absorbed inside it. The ball wiggled a little bit, and then it stopped abruptly, lying underneath the Scorbunny. The athletic little rabbit looked down and picked up the Pokeball cheerfully. With it in his hands, he waves it in the air and jumps up and down, happy about our first victory together. Like him, I was filled with happiness to be able to experience a moment like this. What a memorable way to start a journey....
