 North West of Azalea Town lies miles and miles of dense, lush forest and trees known as the Ilex Forest, home to many a species of almost undisturbed Pokemon and valued greatly by those who live in Azalea. The trees in this north western part of the forest are so dense and thick with a canopy that it almost puts the forest in a perpetual state of night time due to the lack of sunlight that filters through the canopy, but that does not mean that life does not thrive here. Many a species of Pokemon live here and call the forest their home, for there are still some parts today of the forest that have gone undisturbed by human intruders for decades, or maybe even centuries. And deep within the confines of the trees, in the heart of the forest, seldom seen and almost impossible to find, lies the Ilex Shrine.

 Using the rest of the daylight left, Julian set up camp. He laid out his sleeping bag, and collected sticks for a fire. He didn't light it yet though. The sky got darker, and he called out some of his Pokemon. Between Umbreon's glowing rings and the fire on Cyndaquil's back, Julian could see just fine for now. The forest was cozy, the calming sound of Hoothoot and Noctowl in the trees all called, as if on a schedule. Julian decided to stay in this forest for a while. He called out his own Hoothoot, and let him explore the trees and mingle with his own kind for a while.

The next morning, Julian was nudged awake by his Pokemon. They were just as ready as he was to get an early start to their day. He set up, stretched and yawned, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. Apparently the night had passed uneventfully. He realized he needed something from the Pokemon Center, and was quite upset with himself for forgetting it. He had planned on staying in the forest for quite some time, but he gathered up all of his things, called back all of his Pokemon, and started walking back in the direction of town.

He walked further and further from his camp, closer to town, before realizing what he wanted to do in the town wasn't very important. It could wait, his tired mind had convinced him that it was more important than it was. Umbreon and Espeon were confused when Julian turned suddenly and walked back towards camp. They quickly caught back up to him though.
The wild Pokemon in the forest were calling out, and he was tempted to battle all of them. While he did look up at the trees, and through the bushes, he did start looking around the ground as well. He had a new goal in mind.

The next Pokemon that Julian encountered was a Poison-type that he was very familiar with. Both connected regions were abundant with Oddish. He knew how to handle these Pokemon. He sent out Litwick, knowing flames were the best bet against the partial grass typing of Oddish.
He ordered the candle to use Ember (-60, 50/110). Oddish countered with Absorb, trying to regain some lost health (-10, 120/130. +5, 55/110). Unfortunately it was too little, too late. Another Ember ended the battle, and Julian healed Litwick before recalling him into his Pokeball.

Although it was a welcome distraction, the small party had escaped the distraction that was the wild Oddish and a Pokemon battle. It was great for Litwick to gain some more experience, but Julian was still glad when they made it back to camp. When he got back, he let out all of his Pokemon. He knew all of them were smart enough not to wander far, and those that did choose to explore he had faith they could find their way back. Umbreon and Espeon, as a pair, began exploring the immediate area. Whether they were looking for other Pokemon, berries, etc, he wasn't sure. Houndour padded along behind them, trying to keep up. He was like a little puppy trying to tag along; it was actually pretty adorable.
Litwick and Cyndaquil stayed by the fire keeping warm. Hoothoot was in a tree branch, still in sight of Julian, watching them all below with curiosity. Whooper, for some unknown reason, was trying to tackle the trees.

With his Pokemon all busy, Julian decided to sit back and rest. Soon he closed his eyes, and fell asleep for a nap. He wasn't asleep long, however, because he felt something crawling over him. He looked down, and saw a Weedle! He brushed the bug off of him, glaring at it. He snapped his fingers and the nearest Pokemon to him, Hoothoot, swooped down and attacked. Weedle was faster though, and shot a sticky string at the owl. His flight was slower now, wings encumbered by the sticky strands. Still, Hoothoot's Hypnosis worked like a charm. He landed next to the bug, using Peck over and over (-80, 30/110). It woke up and struck out with Poison Sting, but one final Peck was too much for the bug to handle (-15, 75/90) (-40, 0/110). Naturally, Julian fully healed his Hoothoot before letting him return to the tree.

Julian, as it turned out, wasn't the biggest fan of bugs. Some of the bugs he liked a lot, but there were others that just... bugged him. Especially those that made physical contact with him. With extra time on his hands, he began drawing a picture of a Big Mushroom. He was a pretty good artist, but you never really stop learning or becoming better. Showing the picture to his Pokemon, they discussed for a moment in their unique tongues. Apparently they understood, because they all spread out to look for it. Except for Cyndaquil and Hoothoot who stayed nearby; Cyndauquil by the fire and Hoothoot in a tree.

His Pokemon were out hunting down mushrooms, so he decided that he should join them. Hoothoot and Cyndaquil stayed behind and guarded the camp as a 'just in case' sort of precaution while Julian rooted through bushes, around trees, anywhere that people might not see on a leisure stroll through the forest. After about an hour of searching, however, he thought it would probably be best if he moved deeper into the forest. There were miles and miles of woods to be explored, Julian would bet that there were parts still untouched by man. Those were the places he wanted to see for himself. He loved the beauty of nature, and it was an amazing change of pace from the bustling city.

He snapped his fingers to get Hoothoot's attention, and returned Cyndaquil to the Pokeball. The owl got the hint quickly and soon began calling out for all of the others within Julian's party. It only took about five minutes before everyone was back in the clearing and ready to move on deeper into the trees. Umbreon and Espeon were just behind their Trainer as per usual, ready at a moment's notice to jump into battle should something attack Julian. He also kept Hoothoot out of the Pokeball for added protection and for his ability to see well from above.

After walking for about fifteen minutes, the group happened upon a small stream. The current wasn't strong, and the water only came up to Julian's knee, so he wasn't worried about his Pokemon's safety. It was okay for them to play in the water, and play they did! Especially Whooper. It was no frigid cave water, but the small blue Pokemon still enjoyed himself, even going so far as to playfully splash Umbreon and Espeon. They didn't care for the fur on their heads getting wet, but they shook it off. They both sat on the edge of the stream and lay down, the cool water lapping over their paws.
Naturally Cyndaquil and Houndour weren't very interested in the water, so they were allowed to nap peacefully further away in a nice, dry area. Julian joined Whooper in the water, pant legs rolled up and shoes neatly set beside the Fire-types.

Julian's focus was on the water, and on his Pokemon, which explained how he saw their attention all shift in the same direction. He had been leaning over with his hands in the water, but straightened up and craned his neck trying to get a better look at just what had caused the disturbance. The bushes on the other side of his Fire-types were rustling. He waited, with held breath, to find out just what was on the other side of this bush. Suddenly, a small, familiar Pokemon jumped out. It was a Hoothoot, and it had been attracted by the sounds his own Hoothoot would make that he obviously couldn't hear.

Houndour decided he wanted a closer look at this newcomer. The Fire-type approached the wild owl cautiously, sniffing the air. Well, the wild Owl decided it didn't like the unwarranted invasion of it's space and smacked it's head into the head of Houndour. Houndour quickly booked it, growling at the wild Pokemon from a safe distance. 'What a useful Guard-Dog' Julian thought to himself. Still though, he didn't know what this wild Pokemon's intentions truly were. Did he come for a fight? He seemed peaceful enough now that he wasn't being bothered. He could see the owl was making noise, and his own Hoothoot finally approached the other. This was where things would get interesting.

The owl watched them all for a little while. Julian didn't see any threat from it, but it looked interested in something. It hooted at Julian's Pokemon, clearly having a discussion of some sort. They began talking among themselves. Suddenly, it seemed like they all agreed on something. Cyndaquil stepped forward, and the wild Hoothoot got a determined expression on it's face. They were facing off for a Pokemon battle! Julian wouldn't interfere, but wondered why the owl was interested in such a battle. He looked around, suddenly seeing more Hoothoot in a nearby tree, watching. He suddenly understood; this wild Pokemon had to prove himself.

Cyndaquil took a tackle attack, pretending to faint. Noise from the nearby tree rose as the wild Hoothoot looked so proud of himself. They were all content, and Hoothoot could join their gang now. They all flew off. Hoothoot would follow, but first it thanked Cyndaquil. It didn't leave just yet... what did it want? It wanted to battle Cyndaquil for real now. They faced off again, this time the small Fire-mouse didn't hesitate to use Wild Charge. It began running towardds the enemy, electricity suddenly erupting all around Cyndaquil propelling it forward through the air. Upon contact, the electrical energy exploded, bright enough to make Julian shield his eyes and damaging both Pokemon. Cyndaquil was barely able to stay on his feet, but the Hoothoot had been beaten.

Julian sprayed both of his Pokemon with Potions enough to fully restore their lost health. Then, in an act of kindness, he healed the Hoothoot as well and returned the wild creature to a nearby tree. It quickly scurried off to be with it's new pals. Julian was glad that the owl had proven himself to them, the owl deserved to fit in and be happy. He wondered if his own Pokemon were happy being with him. Whether or not they'd be happier, or better off with a Trainer that could hear them, speak to them, communicate. He pet his Cyndaquil, smiling at the small mouse. The Pokemon returned a smile, and Julian could see that the mouse called out happily. He looked around at all of his new friends as the sun began to set.

Julian wondered to himself just who would take the sixth place in his party of Pokemon, of friends. Without having found a flock of Mareep the other day, he wasn't sure just who he would end up bringing along. Whoever it was, he was sure that they would get along well. After all, looking around the recently started campfire, all of his Pokemon seemed happy and content. They played with each other, they were treated well by their Trainer, etc. He was glad they all got along with each other as well, that would be a struggle for him and he wasn't sure just how he'd overcome it.

Nothing eventful happened over the next few hours. It grew late, Julian was laying on his sleeping bag with Umbreon, Espeon, Cyndaquil, and Houndour laying next to him. He was glad it was a cold night, otherwise this much physical contact would leave him overheated. Hoothoot was in a branch overhead, eyes closed and standing on one leg. The owl heard it first; the sound that grew steadily louder and louder. It was a rustling of leaves that was growing closer to the party with each passing second. Soon, the rest of the group heard the disturbance too and quickly woke up standing at attention ready for a battle just in case.

Suddenly, his Pokemon looked back in the same direction. More Butterfree? Julian wondered to himself. But no, a single Trainer broke through the brush with a Pidgey on his shoulder. The new Trainer seemed surprised to see Julian, clearly this area of the forest was usually left alone. 'Oh, hey...' Julian could read the kid's lips say as he grew nearer. 'Did the Butterfree come through here?' Julian nodded his head, and pointed in the direction they went.
The kid thanked Julian and started that way when he suddenly paused. His eyes grew wide and he stared at Julian's Pokemon with fear on his face.

'Are you out of your mind?' He didn't move a step further. He looked from Julian to his Pokemon again. 'Why would you be near one of those? Have you been feeling... weak?' Julian, clearly confused, shook his head that no, he had not. 'I've read about Litwick, they are Ghosts that steal your soul over time.' Julian looked taken aback. His Litwick had never been anything but friendly and playful since joining the group. Maybe since his Litwick was so unique, like a firework, things were different in his nature as well. 'Well... if you're sure.' He didn't seem convinced, and still looked worried.
'You're a Pokemon Trainer, right?' Dumb question, really, with Julian's Pokemon sitting beside him. 'Well, my Pidgeotto and I are looking for Trainers to battle. Are you interested?' Julian considered the offer, rising to his feet and looking at his Pokemon. Cyndaquil stepped forward. 'Aww, a little Cyndaquil. With how strong my Pidgeotto is, he'd have to be a Quilava to stand a chance.' Honestly, Julian was still confused. The Trainer said he had Pidgeotto ready to battle, but the only Pokemon Julian saw was the Pidgey on his shoulder.
It made sense now, though, as the Trainer threw out a Pokeball.

Pidgeotto tackled Cyndaquil, then retreated up into the air, landing on the branch of the tree above their camp. This bird has a hit-and-run tactic, and Julian didn't like it. Good thing for him that they had a secret weapon of their own. Cyndaquil took a look back at Julian, and the Trainer nodded to his Pokemon. Cyndaquil ran forward, picking up speed. Electricity began to form around him. Suddenly, he erupted skyward, rocketing up in front of the bird's face before exploding with the power of it's electrical attack. Just like that, the battle had ended.

'Good battle.' Julian saw the other Trainer say before he turned to fully restore his Pokemon through Potions. At this rate, he'd have to stop by a Pokemart soon. When Julian returned his attention to the other Trainer, he smiled. 'Just be careful.' Julian, naturally, agreed that he would. Suddenly, it began to rain. With the canopy above, fewer rain drops hit the teenager. Still though, he decided that it was best they moved deeper into the forest where the trees grew closer together.

Julian didn't realize at first that the other Trainer was following along. His Pokemon seemed distracted, so he glanced back and saw the familiar face. Deciding not to question it, Julian continued along his path. Deeper into the forest, the rain managed less and less to find it's way to the passing travelers through the canopy above. Hoothoot was now perched on Julian's shoulder just like the new Trainer's Pidgey, and Julian had to admit the weight of a friend nearby was comforting.
