Avalon is a bit hard to pinpoint, as his mood changes a lot and swiftly - making him just as unpredictable as fire. He can either get angry over something meaningless, or keep his emotions at bay over the very same thing. He puts a lot of effort into any task and rarely stops until it's done, no matter how hard or if anyone might get hurt in the process. Even if he refuses to admits it, he is still deeply scarred by his 'childhood', putting a strain between him and other people - he have difficulty actually opening up and trusting others, or even cooperate with them longer. Talking with them about mundane stuff is fine and all, but actually sharing anything with them is too much to ask for. But deep down, when earning his trust, he can be a loyal companion - but better not betray that trust, as he will hold grudges until his death and, just like with work, he won't stop at anything to get revenge.
They are one of those people who get along with Pokemons more. They can show more 'softer' side to them, especially his team. While he does want them to become strong and competent, he doesn't want to achieve it by pushing them too hard or punishing them harshly. But that doesn't mean he can't put his foot down and be strict when needed - he still wants them to obey and respect him as their trainer.
History:
Avalon (as Joyce) was born in Ecruteak City, and soon after birth placed in an orphanage run by Luther, placed on the outskirts of the city. He never got to knew his biological parents, he didn't even know if they were alive and abandoned him or why exactly he was separated.
The orphanage was big with two floors and wide outside area. The place was deeply and thoroughly monitored by Luther's workers, in case someone was breaking rules or trying to run away. Kids were separated into groups, not based on ages but the 'type' Luther assigned them - for some reason, he was giving each kid a Pokemon type to study and take care of, insisting that it will help them in the future. Avalon was assigned to the Fire group, fueling (heh) his interest since his early years. Besides the Pokemon knowledge, they learned about different types of fires, how to extinguish it properly and when, as well as old divination called 'pyromancy' and interpreting signs.. and how to treat burns on human body, since accidents were very common.
Neither Luther or other caretakers were necessarily caring or warm. They did bare minimum to keep the kids alive, healthy and sated, but they never shied away from sometimes borderline cruel punishments whenever someone stayed out of the line. Still, any kid that turned 18 mysteriously 'disappears, and they claimed they left due to the law. While neither Luther or his workers had obvious 'favourites', some kids were treated slightly better than the others, depending on their skills and how fast they were learning.
Eventually he learned that the reason behind the orphanage - it wasn't to house the children, but keep them as tools for his insane goal of summoning Legendary Pokemons. He overheard one of his 'sermons' in the staff's room, insisting that with more sacrifices they are closer to reach their goal, and soon they will need more than human blood. As insane it sounded, Av also learned some older kids already knew that - but they were all too intimidated or indifferent to their fate to do anything. And that's what was happening to the ones who turned 18 - they were taken to the basement and presumably killed. But sometimes they didn't even wait and just took any kid that excelled in understanding their assigned type - as if building a connection between a human and a Pokemon type makes the individual stronger. And why they were never discovered by the public, was due to them treating them 'nice' most of the time, making them presentable and thus avoiding detection whenever someone was coming to check the conditions. Most of the kids were actually stolen from hospitals or homeless people who were unfortunate enough to have kids, on rare occasions some caretakers had them on their own and were willing to put them there, to fuel their leader's power hungry tendencies.
Although Avalon was one of the very few that were favored by Luther (due to his interest in fire and being a fast learner), he grew to hate the man and his 'followers'. Not just from ripping them from their real family, but also for viewing them as nothing more but a future sacrifice for something that might not even be real. Despite listening to their lessons about Arceus and other deities, he always doubted if they were real or benevolent. After all, they let all the abuse happen, didn't they?
It all went for years, until they turned 16. During one night, the whole place was forcibly awoken by a roar and then a loud crash. The whole place began to collapse and set on fire, giving them little time to escape. Avalon, few older kids and workers managed to escape with little wounds, but most ended up getting either buried or burned. The adults cried that it was Ho-oh themselves, punishing them, but Avalon instead saw a tall, yellow dragon, before it fled away.
Afterwards, they made their way to a hospital in Ecruteak. He had no idea what happened to the workers or Luther himself, but he and other kids were kept in the hospital, until their wounds healed, since they had no legal guardians. A week after that, however, a man showed up and claimed to he Avalon mother's older brother - his name was Elain. Since he was (apparently) Avalon's blood family, he became his new guardian and after recovery took him to his hometown, in Azalea Town. Despite the initial tension and distrust, Avalon grew attached to him and viewed him more as an older brother. Even if Elain rarely talked about their family, he insisted that their mother never abandoned him - they were kidnapped like many other kids, and their mother was made to believe the newborn died soon after birth. Avalon was doubtful, however, since his uncle for some reason didn't inform her of finding him after all - but maybe after all those years she and his father died or moved on to another region. Maybe it was better to not tear open old wounds.. at least for now.
Few months later, Elain took him to Ecruteak again, claiming that he has to show him something. When searching the burned remains of the orphanage, they found something actually moving under the rubble. It was a Dratini, but a very weird one - it was ghostly pale with red eyes and with purple, flaming aura surrounding it. It was scared and confused at first when noticing them, but somehow relaxed after noticing Avalon and slithered towards them. After piecing few things together, he came to a conclusion that Luther stole the Dratini from its parent and killed it in a ritual - but its parent must had followed the man or whoever stole it, and destroyed the building in revenge - that would explain the big yellow dragon he saw that day. Uncle then told him that Luther escaped the destruction and with his remaining followers he is hiding somewhere - Elain claimed he heard about that from one of the survivors, after they spotted their past caretaker in a town few days ago.
Knowing Luther's hunger for power wasn't sated and only slowed down, Avalon vowed to make him pay someday. And for that, the older man made a decision to teach him proper survival skills as well more about Pokemons. Elain was a harsh but fair mentor, and unlike their previous caretakers, he never hit him or starved them for making a mistake. The lessons mostly focused on survival in the wild, making food and treating wounds, as Elain warned him that he might not be always 'safe' in a city, and will need to spend a night in the open. The Shadow Dratini 'joined' them, for some reason, essentially becoming their first Pokemon - even though it was really weird, of a type they hadn't heard before. Even books provided by Elain gave him no clue of what 'Shadow type' even was. But that wasn't a mistake either, as every device showed Dratini as possessing the type, and not the usual Dragon.
He decided to bring his plan to life after turning 21. Elain gave him several useful items as well as a PokeBall for the Shadow Dratini, before sending him to New Bark Town, to receive a proper started from Professor Elm.

Appearance/Physical Description:
Avalon is a really tall and athletic young adult. He isn't necessarily buff, his build leans more towards speed and agility than brute strength (but can still punch well). They got medium-length, wavy, dark hair and, as an opposite to that, bright blue eyes. Under his right eye, on the cheek, he have three scars from some Pokemon's claws. Besides that, he got scars in many places - not just from getting his or scratched by Pokemons, but from accidentally getting burned too. Most healed well and aren't really visible unless someone looked up really close.
He, in all honesty, doesn't really care about clothes and being 'stylish'. As long he feels comfortable and appropriate to the situation, and it's not too expensive, he is fine with anything.
