Liz felt a pang of guilt when Julian mentioned how happy Spinarak was to have a trainer. She deserved that kind of a slap for the way she behaved before, but ouch. "I must be the worst trainer in Johto." She remarked with a sigh, brushing her fingers over Spinarak's head and around his horn. The redhead followed her friend to the Pokemon Center with a happier air even after criticizing herself so much. Julian had helped her understand she was an idiot and now they were going to take the first steps to making her Spinarak a happy little bug. She dropped her Pokemon off to heal and then arranged for a place to stay for her and Julian. Spinarak wasn't the only one that deserved better treatment. With Violet City surrounding them, Liz could only marvel at the old-fashioned beauty all around. She had seen Violet City before, yes, but she had also been trying to escape Arol's company and get to Professor Elm with all haste possible. Now she was adventuring, and she had a friend to bring along for this latest adventure! "Come on! Arol told me there's a sweet shop that I've been dying to visit!" Liz called, grabbing Julian by his hand and dragging the young man along when his pace didn't satisfy her excitement. The treats offered at the shop had quite the range of choices from ice cream to chocolate, even a few things Liz had never heard of before. She couldn't help but let out a squeal of delight when she found what Arol had tried to tempt her with. "I'll take two of this, please! And whatever Julian gets." She declared, grabbing some money from a pouch in her bag to pay for it all. Whether or not Julian was interested in having some himself, he might want to watch Liz ruin her mouth. It was a strawberry-chocolate mix covering a very hot pepper! Liz bit down on her first spicy-sweet delight and promptly cried out. Though she was clearly suffering from the spice, the cause for her cry had been pleasure. "It's so sweet and it burns so much! Oh, Arol, you really know my favorites!" If she hadn't been swept up in the bliss, Liz might have exercised a little more maturity than she was right now. At this rate Julian was going to get jealous of a Lampent!

Once she got over the delicious treat she had bought for herself, and made sure Julian got something he wanted, Liz was on the move again. She waited for Julian, but was very impatient. Like a child wanting to explore but knowing better than to abandon her guardian. It took a while for her to mellow out and think back on how today had gone. A good finish for a pretty difficult day, she decided. The only problem now was thinking about how little she knew about her friend. Like what a pro like Julian was doing hanging around with a nobody like her. Come to think of it, his team seemed to be pretty lacking for somebody with so many badges... "Hey." She waited for him to respond while they sat down outside the Pokemon Center. She wanted to talk before claiming her team, when she might distract herself from an important question. "How come you have six badges, but you're all the way back here screwing around with me?" She asked, watching Julian's face for the first time since they had met. He was handsome, and she had also begun to finally suspect something was weird about how he talked to her. She was nowhere close to realizing Julian was deaf, but she was aware that he had a habit of "hearing" her at times she would have had to repeat what she said to regular people. And maybe she liked his face. A little bit. "You could go anywhere. You can beat anybody you want to." She added, feeling more like she was grilling him on why they were even friends than what he was doing delaying his Gym Challenge. She wasn't going to deny a good friendship like Julian's.

There was an uncomfortable question Liz hadn't meant to invite. She fidgeted nervously and then offered a half-smile. "Arol is a Lampent. He's my fat--" She paused, thinking about how absurd that claim still sounded, then corrected herself to the story she had accepted. "He's my father's Pokemon. He can be a bit of a worry wort, and he keeps trying to behave like dad. He and my mom's Haunter have been helping around the house since after the accident." The rest of the lie came more easily after getting it started. She trusted Julian, but she didn't like to share the pain in her life. Her father was dead and nothing was going to change that. She didn't have to pretend anything was OK, just that they were not going to change. Arol claiming to be her father's Ghost only ever made Liz angry, so she had this story well-practiced so she could deny that she believed him. She couldn't deny how helpful Arol and Junior had been, though. They worked like they had never left.

Liz grew tense when Julian walked away from her. She fidgeted more as she began to worry that the question had been off-limits. Arol was a sensitive topic for her, too, but Julian had no idea who she had been praising for the shop. She invited the inquisition, but she had jumped Julian with her own. The way he had seemed almost exclusively focused on her was what made her wonder. Waiting turned out to be too much trouble for the redhead and she made sure to reclaim all of her Pokemon before coming right back out to wait. Spinarak was still resting, comfortably tucked into Liz's arms while he snoozed. Touching a Bug Pokemon was still making her skin crawl, but Spinarak deserved her attention for beating Whimsicott and still showing her the loyalty she hadn't deserved. She was even making sure to keep him on her bare forearm just so he could feel her without the glove on her right arm disrupting it.

Julian came out and she let out a breath she didn't know she had been holding. She had to mentally chide herself for seriously thinking he was trying to run. Hearing that Julian had lost was a weird thing to hear. She could believe he was able to lose, but she had been so sure he was one of the best trainers out there. "You lost?" The surprise in her tone was honestly a bit foolish, but Liz didn't know what else to think of it. "But how?" She couldn't help but ask the stupid question. It was a shock to her perception that she couldn't reconcile at the moment. There was a mix of excitement and anxiety when Julian mentioned introducing his team to her. She already knew she wasn't the best trainer, now she would get to see just how little she had achieved in two days. In her defense, Liz assumed that Julian was an expert with a long list of achievements and a short calendar.

Liz frowned when he explained some of what had happened. It only made her more distressed to realize that somebody like Julian could get beaten by the Gym Leaders. What chance did she have of completing this Gym Challenge? Liz clenched left hand into a fist, but didn't act on the urge to hit him for wanting to run. "Well, you're stronger now." She declared matter-of-factly. "And you have someone to be there and help out. You can win. I know it. If anybody is going to finish this Gym Challenge thing, it's you." Liz held her gloved arm out with her fist squeezed tight. "You'll miss every chance you don't take! So take it!" She was smiling even though her voice was fierce and determined. She knew Julian could take on Pryce again. Maybe he needed to adjust his team a bit, but he had nothing to fear in her opinion. Except maybe her if he decided to be a coward about it.

The team introduction made Liz flinch at first. They were all so big! Pidgeot and Noctowl were already familiar to her, but Exeggutor--Tank--Arcanine, Persian, and Typhlosion were all an intimidating bunch. Almost. Liz couldn't help herself when she was introduced to Typhlosion. When she got closer to the big badger Pokemon, she lunged forward and gave Typhlosion a hug, burying her face into his fur. "They're huge." Liz declared with awe in her voice. "And they're all so fluffy! Like Pokedolls!" She added, giggling at the way Typhlosion's fur and warm body tickled her cheek. She would never confess to the collection of dolls she had back home, even if it was the best way Liz had been able to learn about Pokemon that weren't around Goldenrod City. She let go of Typhlosion finally and grinned at Julian. "So you'll win for sure, right? We'll be right there with you." Liz was way too sure of Julian for her own good, but she didn't think he could fail if he believed in it. Especially if he had a cheerleader there to keep him from losing heart. If it weren't for the scars, Liz would consider the outfit for more than a second.

Spinarak woke up during the conversation, staring wide-eyed at the terrible visage of Typhlosion until Liz stepped away. He squeaked out a plea for mercy and cowered in Liz's embrace. "Don't eat me! Spinaraks are bad for your guts!" He cried to Typhlosion, one little Poison Sting dart poking out if he was really facing the end. It was pretty easy to figure out that wasn't the case. Liz tightened her hold on Spike and looked up to Typhlosion as if it were only just dawning on the woman how scary he looked. "Oh! I'm sorry, Spike. I didn't even think!" She coddled her Spinarak and stroked one finger across Spinarak's head that helped him settle down. Instead of retracting the Sting, his newly opened eyes spied a tasty treat! Darts flew over the top of Julian's head, rustling his hair slightly but doing no harm. A handful of Pecha Berries bumped to the ground close together. Liz didn't get what her Bug was doing, but she did manage to move so that Spike could shoot a thread across and pick up the berries in a sticky net before dragging the silk back. Liz shuddered at the feel of webbing on her arm, but didn't put Spike down. He munched happily on the Pecha Berries one by one until only one remained. His mandibles froze halfway to biting the last one and he looked up to Liz. He could tell she was doing more for him, so he tenderly grabbed the last Berry and offered it to his trainer. Liz only smiled and took the Berry before she placed it in a pouch next to the Oran Berry she had taken before. "Really? Well thank you, Spike. You're such a good little Spinarak." She said, lifting Spike up to rub her nose to his forehead. Every instict screamed to toss the thing and she did her best to ignore it. Although mostly smooth skin, Spike had fuzz too. Focusing on that bit of fuzz tickling her nose made the experience more bearable. It made her happy to know that she was doing better for her Spinarak, too. Spike deserved love the same as any other Pokemon.

Liz was too focused on making Spike feel safe again to notice that it had gone quiet at first. Julian was thinking about his Gym Challenge, she was thinking about where they might go next. She still needed to find Falkner first, though. Or...go see what she could get into trouble with around town! "C'mon, Spike! Let's go find more Pokemon!" Liz cried gleefully, clearly under the impression she would like whatever she found. It was a short trip before Liz was pleasantly surprised with a Mareep. The little electric sheep Pokemon had wandered away from a herd grazing outside city limits and stumbled upon a crazy red-haired human and her silent companion. Liz sucked in a deep breath before screaming with joy. "It's so CUTE! Julian! Julian, look! It's a wild Mareep! I've always wanted a Mareep! They're so adorable!" She gushed relentlessly. Spike was already getting jealous, though he wasn't sure he wanted to fight Mareep to prove he was more worthy of Liz's love. He knew what Falkner would probably do to him, and he also knew that Mareep would give Liz the edge she needed to beat the Bird Trainer, but that didn't mean he had to like this!

Round 1:
Mareep (50/50) used Thundershock (-30)! Spike was Paralyzed!
Spike (20/50) resisted Paralysis! Spike used Infestation! (-15)
Mareep is infested! (35/50)

Mareep looked nervously at the girl approaching. It did not appreciate the stranger's behavior at all. The electric jolt from Mareep's anxiety made Liz flinch and that was the straw that broke the Numel's back for little Spike. He spit a mouthful of webbing at Mareep to keep it away from Liz, then leaped from Liz's arms into battle! He didn't think things through too much, as Mareep quickly reminded Spinarak that he wasn't exactly equipped for power. Electricity danced across the spider's body and left him steaming slightly. His aching body trembled as it took everything Spike had to release the sound that summoned dozens of little bugs to his aid. Mareep yelped and flailed as the Infestation made her fleece itch worse than ever! Not even shocking the little biters stopped it!

Round 2:
Liz called back Spike! Time for battle, Rin!
Mareep (35/50) used Thundershock (-30)! Rin resisted Paralysis! (100/130)
Mareep takes damage from Infestation (-15) (20/50)

Liz wanted to let Spike fight, but he was clearly suffering and Mareep had only shocked him once. She made the smarter decision and traded Spike out so he could take a break. "Spike, get away from it!" She forgot that she had given Julian Spike's Pokeball, so she instead snatched him up from the ground before Mareep could shock him again. Liz really wanted Mareep, and she didn't want to hurt it, but she was now mad that it had Paralyzed Spike after only one attack. "You may be cute, but hurting my Pokemon isn't OK! Get in there, Rin!" Liz shouted, more confused now than ever emotionally. She loved her Pokemon, but sshe also adored this Mareep. And she was sure she would capture it. But, she had been harsh on Spike before. It only made sense to be angry that Mareep did to Spike what Spike had done to Cherry before. They could be friendly later. Mareep flailed again, generating a great deal of electricity before shocking the Furret as she came out of her ball. Rin was an irate log of fur afro now. Liz was shocked at the reminder that her Sentret was no longer tiny. She snorted at the way Rin's fur poofed out after Thundershock hit and looked away when Furret turned to glare at her.

Round 3:
Liz used Pokeball!
Mareep used Thunder Wave! Rin was Paralyzed!
Mareep is hurt by Infestation (-15)! (5/50)

Liz should have taken out Mareep before it figured out a way to make her regret it. In all fairness, she thought the Ball would work. It had every other time. Mareep broke free instead and the slow shimmer of Thunder Wave made her regret it. Rin stiffened and made a distressed cry as Mareep stunned her for sure instead of relying on regular shocks to do it. Rin was Paralyzed now!

Round 4:
Liz uses Pokeball! Mareep was captured!!

Liz winced when Rin made a pitiful noise at her trainer. She shouldn't have taken that chance and now Rin was suffering for it. Rather than put Rin through any more, Liz had decided for sure that she could finish this now. She threw a Pokeball and quickly knelt down beside Rin before Mareep was even pulled inside. She shuddered from the buzz she felt off of Rin's fur, trying to smooth out her Furret and relieve some of the strain in Paralysis. She almost didn't notice that Mareep's ball had stopped shaking. "Rin, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Just breathe. Nice and slow. You're going to be OK, Rin." She soothed, stroking her Furret still even as the lingering static made her own hair start to rise. She grabbed Mareep's Pokeball and returned Rin and Spike both. "Here, you two sleep for now." She whispered to the Pokeballs, smiling softly at Julian. "Well...I got what I asked for." She said, a clear tone of sadness in her expression and body language. Mareep should have been an easy enough capture and she still messed up. It made her upset that she was being trusted with Pokemon. Liz carried her Pokeballs back, taking the two victims of her mistakes and her new acquisition to get healed up. Next she would have to decide who would go to the PC for Mareep to become part of her team. It was hard to decide. She hadn't expected to run out of room so quickly! Now she was going to have to send one of her beloved Pokemon away to stay in the Storage System. "I'm sorry. I wish I could keep you all with me." She murmured to herself as she stored a Pokemon away and selected Mareep in the system to be registered under her Team.

Liz smiled at Julian as he looked over her newly occupied Pokeball. It was a short trip back to the Pokemon Center, and Liz was happy to see that Joy was waiting for them. Well, perhaps not. It seemed a little too easy to find a Nurse Joy ready and waiting at any given time. Getting her Pokemon treated was a quick and easy solution, and she got some food ready for each member of her team. Once prepared, Liz finally sat down to her own sandwiches and listened to Julian advise her on preparing for tomorrow. "Are you sure I have a chance? He's a Gym Leader. I can barely take care of my own Pokemon." She asked, seriously questioning her ability as a trainer. While the comment was indeed harsh, Liz was not being entirely derisive of herself. She was seriously unsure how she would beat Falkner. Fluffy gave her an edge, and Rin evolving was a point in her favor. While she thought about it, she took her Pokedex out and began consulting it. Seeing Noctowl and Pidgeot gave her a start. Dex didn't have a lot of information given Liz's lack of data input, but it could give her basic strategies that would most likely work. Like frying it with as much electrical power as she could. Or throwing rocks, rocks worked too. It mentioned Ice, but it also pointed out that very few trainers got their hands on Ice Type Pokemon or their chilling attacks. She was still trying to figure out how to find one. Dex offered nothing helpful. No Ice Types near and none of her Pokemon were likely to get those abilities.

"So...Fluffy is my secret." She concluded, scooting closer to Julian to show her screen to him. Her mouth was full, so it was a good thing Noctowl pulled thoughts from her head. The words were't coming out clearly. After swallowing her last bite, she continued. "Then...Rin and Cherry are the best bet after that. Poor Astro doesn't have a chance. Neither does Spike, but maybe he could give them hell. Sylveon...Maybe I shouldn't let him fight. He doesn't seem like he's made for it. Does he?" Liz inquired, wanting a genuine bit of input. If he agreed with her assessment, she would have to keep Sylveon out of the battle like Umbreon and Espeon. She hadn't considered that Aiden fellow's mention of Contests yet. Getting her Pokemon taken care of and prepared for her first battle with Falkner had her distracted from the idea.

Liz couldn't hold back a yawn and had to lean away so she didn't blow right into Julian's face. She gave a sleepy smile and sighed in disappointment. "I don't suppose I could get your help?" It was a weird offer, but Liz was equal parts tired and trusting of her friend. If Julian didn't fully understand the request, Noctowl would be able to piece together the fuzzy thoughts that she was offering to spend the night together so she could do more research. Maybe take advantage of some body warmth. She didn't look it but Liz was like a reptile. She yawned again, waiting for Julian to give an answer before heading upstairs to sleep. They were not going to achieve much in Liz's research and she was OK with that.

It was probably a bad idea to invite Julian to share the room, but Liz didn't care. She cared even less once they got to the room and settled into bed. It was a feat to even hear Julian through her foggy head even as she cuddled up to him without a second though. Another yawn and Liz was resting her cheek on Julian's chest, fighting a losing battle against sleep. "Mm. Yeah. Fluffy will help. She can shock Noctowl..." She mumbled. That sounded like Liz was planning to attack Julian, but between her addled mind and the reference material she'd had to study with it was pretty easy to determine what she really meant. She would be facing a Hoothoot after all, so the assessment wasn't completely wrong. "But...I think Cherry should go first. Or maybe Rin. I don't know. Probably Cherry..." She added, eyes already shut as she got more comfortable with Julian's heartbeat and warmth. "Sylveon won't fight. Not if I can help it." She frowned, opening her eyes and looking up to Julian. "Spike shouldn't fight either, or Astro. But if he can get a hit in, he could really change the fight, you know? Dex said Astro can confuse enemies, and Spike...well, he can do a lot. What should I do?" The question was moral, not practical. If Spike had a slight chance of hitting one of Falkner's Pokemon with Poison Sting, or even Infestation, he should get to try. She didn't want to put him through that misery if she could help it, but she also didn't want to make him feel like she didn't trust him to battle. Her relationship with Spike was so confusing right now. At least with Cherry and Rin she knew they wanted to battle. Spike seemed afraid more often than not, but he was so happy when she was praising him that he did. Was she encouraging battle and not even realizing it? That was making her upset to consider. Her Pokemon shouldn't feel like they have to fight to be loved. While Julian would no doubt be contemplating how best to use Liz's team, she drifted off to sleep without another word. She lay against Julian and didn't budge an inch if he tried to slip away to sleep somewhere else.

It was hard not to sleep in with a bed partner. Liz woke up and gave the morning sun a drowsy scowl. Sleeping with Julian had been exactly what she had hoped for. The bed was warmer than if she had slept alone, and having another human body near just felt better. The redhead would have been more ashamed of the implications of sleeping with her companion, except that she had been solely focused on going over tactics together one last time and then keeping each other warm. Anything else had escaped her sleep-hazed mind and nothing had come to her yet on why that would look bad. Instead, Liz slowly and reluctantly pushed herself away from the extra heat. Time to get up, time to go get ready for meeting Falkner. She got a shower, keeping her clothes and accessories in the bathroom since Julian was still there. She might have forgotten what "boy and girl share room" might imply, but she wasn't about to walk around naked. The shower was short and easy and dressing went just as well. The glove covering her right arm was situated as perfectly as she could manage. Today would be pretty stressful, Liz was sure. She didn't need the glove slipping off or something else going wrong. She admired herself briefly in the mirror before coming out with her laundry tucked into a pocket on her bag. She sat down in a chair near the door, waiting for Julian to wake if he hadn't already. Either way, she would make sure to turn her Pokedex down and get back to the study. Her team was as ready as it could ever be, now they waited on her to know what they needed to do.

Dexter had no new useful information to offer. Liz was perusing for the sake of memorizing some of her team's abilities now. It was a lot harder than she first thought. Cherry and Rin had similar attacks, which should have made it easier, but she wound up blending moves by mistake. "Cherry, Fury Swi--Wait, no. That's Rin!" She muttered furiously to herself, shaking her head sharply. At least she could remember that Rin couldn't use Ember. Growl was harder to recall, though. She made the mistake of thinking Cherry could use Defense Curl. It was far more difficult than she could have imagined. Cherry, Rin, and now Fluffy. They were her main focuses for now. She was sure she could beat Falkner with just that trio. Hopefully fewer still than that. Cherry could do it. She was sure Cherry could beat them. That was all it would take. Rin could pick up any slack from there. She knew that her first Pokemon would be her best. Dex didn't have to tell her that much, she already knew. Although, according to her Pokedex, whatever happened to Rin to make her evolve appeared to be happening to Cherry too. She was starting to worry about whatever was happening. It didn't seem to be hurting her Pokemon, but that didn't make her feel better. "What are you...?" She murmured to herself, frowning thoughtfully.

Liz was startled from her reading when Julian came shirtless out of the other bathroom. Her cheeks flushed slightly as some of what she had forgotten about became a little more apparent. She hadn't even noticed there was another door. "Oh! Good morning, Julian. Did you sleep well?" She greeted with a warm smile. It took her some time to realize that he wasn't just missing her presence. She mistook it for ignoring her and couldn't help feeling like she'd done wrong somehow. "Julian?" She stood up and stepped out to make sure Julian saw her this time. "Julian, what's the matter?" If he couldn't read her lips before, he would be able to now that she had made a point to get better into his field of vision. He was still getting his shirt, so she might not get his attention just yet. She was getting confused with Noctowl still asleep. It was the first time Liz had talked to Julian without Noctowl transmitting for him. She was shouting at a deaf man and thinking he was upset with her. Assuming he hadn't noticed right away, Liz would be looking very distressed at that moment. She was afraid she had angered her friend last night without ever knowing what she had said or done.

For Liz things had escalated to the point she was going to cry. She was raising her hand to grab him when Julian acknowledged her finally. He threw his towel at Noctowl, which caused Liz to pause and stare in utter confusion. He was deaf, and she was an idiot. The redness in Liz's cheeks grew sharply as she went from distressed anger to complete embarrassment. "I'm sorry." She stammered out finally. "I had no idea. You always heard me so well, and spoke so clearly." She explained, though the puzzled expression on her face was proof enough that some things that hadn't added up before were making way more sense now. Like being answered when she was speaking softly or otherwise unclear. Now that it was getting close to time for her to challenge the Violet City Gym, Liz released her entire team just to spend a little time with them. "Good morning, everyone!" She greeted the group with a cheerful smile. "Today is going to be our first Gym Battle! We have to be ready for anything! Julian said this Falkner guy is tough, but I know you can beat him!" Cherry cheered in a very Cyndaquil fashion by igniting his back and blowing a jet of fire straight up. Rin was still waking up, perking at the mention of battling a Gym Leader. She was OK with beating a Leader...or at least getting a chance to sneak around while he was distracted. Fluffy had no idea what was going on or why she was about to go battling for the first time when they had barely just met! Doom. Doom was why. Her new trainer was clearly trying to kill her. Astro had taken to flying around the room, narrowly dodging Cherry's fire and not even sure what was going on! But Liz was excited so he was excited and that was what mattered, right? Spike couldn't stop shaking, worried about what those bird Pokemon would do to him if he fought. It was Liz's encouragement and faithful smile that helped him steel his resolve to try anyway. If things worked out properly, he would never have to fight anyway. Sylveon was the only one with no interest at all on the coming event. He beamed at Liz and let out a cheerful cry, but he didn't care what she was talking about. He had more important things to focus on, like getting back to the Contest scene. He certainly had no intention of getting messy just to prove he was better than some Flying Pokemon.

As a way to further boost morale, Liz fed each member of her team a Rare Candy with breakfast. Cherry shuddered after his, glowing momentarily before resuming his normal appearance, which made Liz remember what she saw in Dexter's readings before. It didn't make sense, but it was out of place according to the machine. She wanted to think about it, but she felt focusing on the Gym was a bigger deal. Rin had gone through the same phenomenon without being noticed and she Evolved. It was going to be ok. Maybe. Now Liz had to stop fretting about possibility and move on with her plan. She had the necessary things to win her first ever Gym Battle.

Instead of calling her team back, Liz gathered them together and headed out. Spike perched on top of Liz's head. Rin was dd lazily across Liz's shoulders like a big, furry boa. Her ears and her tail nearly touching the ground. Astro buzzed around with excitement, still completely lost on what exactly was happening. Sylveon strut alongside his trainer, not sure he appreciated needing to even come out for this. He nudged at Liz to be let back into his ball, but the redhead was too focused on moving forward to realize she was being hailed. Cherry and Fluffy were being carried together. It proved a lot more awkward than Liz had first expected, but she was determined to give her first Pokemon and her latest a ride in her arms. Though Liz started to struggle with her carrying load after a while, she managed to carry her Pokemon right into Violet City's Gym. It was a long silence before it occurred to her that she might need to announce her presence. This was certainly deflating her enthusiasm. Maybe it had been a bad idea... "Uhm, hello? Is this the Gym?" She looked like a lost and timid girl suddenly, feeling grossly unsure of what she was even doing anymore. Before she could find the sense to leave before things got more uncomfortable, a bird tamer leaped onto the scene. He came down from the rafters and landed in an impressive pose. "Good morning! I was wondering when a challenger would arrive!" He called, smiling broadly at Liz who only half-smiled back. Rather than drag the tension on, he produced his Pokeball and sent out his Pokemon. "Go, Spearow! Let's start this Gym Challenge!" Liz shook herself out of her stupor, looking up and then down at her Pokemon. "Come on, Cherry! Let's get him!" She cried, letting Cherry jump down from her arms and onto the battlefield.

The two Pokemon squared off immediately, ready to fight for their trainers and to prove they were the better Pokemon. "Cherry, try out your new attack! Use Flame Wheel!" Liz commanded, watching as Cherry started exhaling fire before he curled up into a ball and turned that stream into a ring. The flames began to sway all over as Cherry struggled to take aim and exhale fire at the same time. He rolled past Spearow again and again, giving the bird ample opportunity to get into range. "Spearow! Use Fury Attack, now!" Called the Tamer. Spearow chased after the flailing wheel of a Cyndaquil and began pecking and scratching at Cherry relentlessly. He was trying to knock Cherry out of Flame Wheel, but instead only gave Liz's fire mouse something to focus on. He wheeled about as Spearow attacked and wound up being the one to interrupt a move. Fire and feathers flew when Cherry hit his mark, knocking Spearow for a loop as Cherry recovered and finally exited the flaming rush.

"Go, Cherry! Before he can recover! Use Ember!" It was an easy win. Not that Cherry hadn't suffered for his victory, but once the advantage was taken, Spearow didn't have a chance. Another blast of fire, Cherry spewed a series of smaller flames like a shotgun that gave Spearow nowhere to run. The flames went out after only a few moments and Cherry sat back on his haunches to stare at Spearow. The bird remained on the ground before the Tamer finally called it back. "All right! Go, Cherry! You won!" Liz cheered, waving her Pokemon back so she could give him Potions for his damages and think about whether or not she wanted Cherry to battle in the next match. Maybe let Rin go next. Fluffy wasn't exactly a secret, though, maybe give her a shot to start with instead of saving her for a trump card. Would she even win if she were sent out last? Liz frowned thoughtfully, looking everywhere but up as she seemed to believe Falkner was due to come out any second. She hoped, at least. It would be humiliating to challenge a Gym Leader only to catch him on a day off!

It was a huge relief to discover she had only come to the wrong part of the Gym. Even knowing she was facing a Flying Type trainer, Liz couldn't fathom spending all of her time on the roof. Then again, Falkner probably felt the same way about people not being as close to the sky as they could. She called her Pokemon back except for Rin, deciding not to deal with the inevitable problems one might face walking around with her entire team out and waiting to be attacked by hungry or mischievous birds. Rin still hung around Liz's neck, pretending to nap and popping up momentarily when she was both unobserved by the humans and had found a tasty treat to steal from one of the roosts. She got to do this three times before they ran out of stairs and were facing the awesome display by Falkner. The redhead was more than a little frightened of the quintet of bird Pokemon flying with Falkner's Pidgeot. She was expected to beat those things!? It was going to be Whimsicott all over again! While Liz was trying to think of a way to escape without looking like a coward, Falkner had dismounted and addressed her. She was still watching the birds long after they had flown away before finally realizing she was being spoken to.

It took another uncomfortable silence for Liz to find her words again. She wasn't one for gawking, but her opponent was a lot more attractive than most of the men she had met before. "Uhh, yes! Challenge! Here. I--" She sputtered and had to shake her head fiercely before trying again. She took a strong stance and stabbed her finger at Falkner from where she stood. "I'm Liz Morgan, and I want to battle!" She shouted, more uncomfortable than ever. Some of that anxiety ebbed away when Falkner sent out a cute little Hoothoot for her to face. "Aww! Your Hoothoot is so cute!" She cried out before she could stop herself. Liz appeared determined to embarrass herself completely before today was over. "I don't want to hurt it, but...Rin! It's time!" Liz called out, looking to her fluffy passenger after a moment of sound silence. Rin had dozed off after eating her pilfered snacks and didn't want to wake up. "Rin? Rin~! Wake up! You're going to battle now!" Liz pleaded with her Furret, only getting a huff and a whine from Rin. The argument was short, and Rin finally slid from Liz's shoulders to waddle out onto the field. She wasn't as interested in fighting as Liz had first thought. She was still the only one ready to do it. "Hey. I don't want to ruin a good mood. Be a friend and fall down already?" The lazy Furret remarked to Falkner's Hoothoot. She knew better, but one could only hope. Curse her wanting to make sure Liz's smile from before happened again.

"Okay, Rin! Go at it with Fury Swipes!" Liz commanded, showing all the enthusiasm she'd had before when Cherry battled Spearow. That was something Rin felt obligated to support, and so she lunged at Hoothoot with all the fervor of a Pokemon as eager as their trainer was. Claws flashed and Rin scratched at Hoothoot repeatedly before breaking away and trying to find a chance to avoid his retaliation. She hadn't hurt him as much as she had wanted, but she had done some damage. Someone else could at least take care of it if she got switched out. Even though the reason would probably be bad news, Rin really hoped to get swapped out. Maybe she would get lucky and Hoothoot wouldn't achieve anything. It was a nice wish for the whole two seconds it lasted.

Liz was enthusiastic after Rin's first attack seemed to do some damage. Hoothoot didn't look like he was terribly upset by the scratches, though whatever Rin had been saying before the battle might have ruffled his feathers. He looked more irate than hurt or worried. When Falkner called for Hoothoot's first attack, Liz couldn't help freaking out just a little. She hadn't seen Hypnosis before, but she'd heard about it. "What--wait, no. Rin! Rin, don't look at him!" Liz cried, which only prompted Rin to do exactly that. She was still trying to figure out what was wrong with looking at the little twerp when Hoothoot gave her a retort and caught her with that shining gaze. "Whoops..." Furret's eyes grew heavy and she wavered before drooping sideways onto the ground. Now Hoothoot had free reign of the battlefield, and there was nothing Liz could do about it. She could change out Rin, sure, but that wouldn't change the fight. It was actually in the redhead's best interest to give Hoothoot his free shots and hope Rin's next attack would put him down.

Liz was growing increasingly frustrated. She crouched down and leaned back on her heels to keep from fidgeting and pacing all over her side. She wanted very badly to run out and carry Rin away from the fight, but these boxes weren't just for show. "Hang in there, Rin! Just wake up and do this!" She knew enough about this move to know her shouting was pointless just now. Maybe she could help Rin wake up faster, but it wasn't going to stop Hoothoot. Liz was gritting her teeth, scowling at Falkner for taking advantage of something Liz was clearly unprepared for. "That's a cheap trick!" She accused, even knowing in the back of her mind that it was completely within his rights to use. It especially helped someone like Hoothoot get an edge against a stronger opponent. It did not help poor Liz deal with the things she hated most. Rin was being hurt by this, if indirectly, and Liz could do nothing but watch until the Furret woke up. She hated feeling helpless. She folded her arms over her knees and rested her chin on top of that, watching Rin as if she could will her Pokemon back to the waking world.

Liz grit her teeth, trying to avoid all the foul things she wanted to call Falkner. He wasn't being a jerk, he was battling. This was how battling worked. She had to keep repeating that to herself just to keep from screaming at the Gym Leader. It was a hard thing when she really had nothing else she could do right now. "Rin...!" Hoothoot pecking on her Furret did not help her mood at all. Hoothoot really was a terrifying Pokemon with the right moves. What could have been an entirely one-sided match was now anybody's game. The longer Rin slept, the better odds Hoothoot had of defeating her. Liz at least hoped that Rin wouldn't remain sleeping for Hypnosis' full effect. She just had to wait for the Furret to wake up, then it would be her chance to take this nasty owl down!

What was so difficult about waking up after getting attacked? This move made no sense to Liz. She would probably have to experience Hypnosis personally to understand the power it had. The stronger the influence, the harder it would be to just wake up. She was still crouched, staring at Rin. The Furret looked somewhat peaceful except for the wound she now had from Hoothoot's Peck. Still nothing she could do about it. Liz fidgeted and raised her scowl back to Falkner. He was pretty happy with himself. Who wouldn't be after bringing low a Pokemon like Rin. More fidgeting, less voice. Waiting and worrying was taking its toll on the trainer. All she could do now was think about it. There was Quick Attack, Agility, Defense Curl, and Fury Swipes. The only one that could do more damage was Fury Swipes. If she didn't want Hoothoot putting Rin to sleep every couple of rounds, she would have to take the chance to put that owl down. Hoothoot shouldn't have fared well against the first Fury Swipes, so Liz was confident that Rin's other attack wouldn't be enough.

Peck and Peck and Peck some more, Hoothoot just didn't let up! Liz grit her teeth again, threatening to crack them while waiting for Rin to wake. The Furret finally began to stir as she woke from Hoothoot's forced slumber. A low growl emitted from the Furret's fluff as she raised up from sleep and glared at Hoothoot. "You just had to be difficult." Rin grumbled, stretching out and waiting for Liz's next order.

"Rin! You're up! Show that Hoothoot what you can do! Use Furry Swipes!" Liz cheered, jumping from her small position and throwing her fists in the air. She was so grateful to see Rin back in action that she didn't even realize she had mispronounced the attack. Rin didn't need clarification, only an order that meant she could lunge at the rotten owl! Rin very nearly flew into Hoothoot, clawing at the Pokemon with more fervor than the last attack. She was clearly upset with being put to sleep after all of this, and Hoothoot got to take the brunt of it. There wasn't much left after that. Hoothoot looked to be done for with Rin's attack, and that only made Liz cheer again. "Aha! Take that!" She shouted at him, clearly full of herself with Rin's recovery. Considering she accused this tactic of being cheap, it was no surprise to see her gloating over its short span. Yes, Hoothoot did his harm already, but Liz knew it could have been much worse. She was grateful Rin woke up in time. Hoothoot went down, and Rin stood triumphantly over her opponent. When Falkner called back his Pokemon, Liz followed suit. "Rin, good work! Now it's time for my secret ace! Go, Fluffy!" It really wasn't much of a secret. Falkner might have even been warned about Fluffy before since Liz had her team out at the ground floor. The Mareep came out of her ball and looked around, blinking quizzically at Falkner like she had no idea why she was being called out. Liz was proud of the opportunity. Fluffy would get a chance to beat Falkner's next Pokemon if Liz played this out correctly. Slow it down, first and foremost.
