"A town that can't be shaded by any hue."
On one of the southern most points on the mainland of the Hoenn Region, Littleroot town is located on an open cape just off the coast of the region. Littleroot town, despite what it's name might suggest, is actually a fairly large town with some towers and small skyscrs, where the residencies remain on the outskirts in the abundant space the Hoenn region has to offer. In the southwest part of the town, there is actually a small harbor with some docks and ports where boats can come and go, making Littleroot Town a small, yet active and bountiful place, especially when you take into account that the region's Pokemon Professor's Laboratory can be found in Littleroot Town as well.
Location of Littleroot Town:
Connecting Routes to: Oldale Town
Connecting Trains to: Pallet Town, Newbark Town, Sandgem Town, Vaniville Town, Ranger School

Katie Du'Mont This was it! Without breathing, she reached out an arm and took her first-ever Pokemon and a set of items from the goofy Professor. She nodded her head, thanked him, and left the cool air. She didn't even care about the warmth, she had her first Pokemon! Rounding the building, she found a secluded spot on the edge of town behind a house and sat on an upraised tree root. Her purse was weighed down with tiny Pokeballs (nothing like the one in her hand) and Potions (would she really need all these?). She aimed her Pokeball up into the sky. It opened, shooting out red energy. Treecko blinked in the sudden silence, before falling through the air and landing with a -smack- on the roof of the house. "What the..." She muttered, looking up at the green gecko as he shook himself off and climbed higher. "You don't have wings!" She accused him.

Katie Du'Mont Treecko turned a bitter expression back at her. "Tree, Treecko Tree!" He retorted angrily. He climbed around to the other side of the roof, then down the side of the house and in through an open window. She ran around to the other side of the house and just caught his tail disappearing through the opening into this Stranger's home. "Come back here!" She hissed through the window. Oh no, this wasn't good! She'd just got her first Pokemon, and already lost it! Running to the front door, she knocked a bit harder than courtesy dictated due to her nerves. "Hello?!" She called out. Nobody answered. A dozen options crossed her mind - each more idiotic than the last - but she just couldn't live with herself if her first Pokemon ran away. -Backpack-Posting for Wild Pokemon - 4/?Posting for Trainer Battle - 4/25Posting for Super Potion - 4/10Out of Pokeball:Wearing - Loose white tank-top, black shorts, black hiking boots.

Katie Du'Mont There was nothing else for it, she was just going to have to do something crazy. She placed her hands on the window-sill, hesitating only a moment, before hoisting herself up and through. She landed lightly in a cozy little living room. 'Where are you, ya stupid lizard?' She thought as she scanned all around the room. There was no sign of him, but two open doors sat at either end of the room. He could have gone through either one, and the owner could be back at any moment. Her eyes were suddenly drawn to a framed photograph of a smiling family gathered together; a Father with one arm on his child's shoulder and the other around his Wife. It felt like a handful of stones just dropped into her stomach It was the Professor.

Katie Du'Mont The only word to accurately describe her feeling, confronted with the fact that she'd just broken into the Professor's house, could only be described as panic. She ran to the closer of the two open doorways, finding herself in the kitchen. All of the drawers and cabinets were closed, He wasn't under the kitchen table, he wasn't hiding in the sink, and he wasn't on top of the fridge (she found out after jumping up onto the counter). Back into the living room, she looked under the couch, behind the television, and inside the potted plant in the corner. Treecko wasn't in the living room either. Through the opposite door, she was now standing in a hallway. Every door was closed except the one at the end, which was cracked just wide enough to allow something small, green, and quick. -Backpack-Posting for Wild Pokemon - 6/?Posting for Trainer Battle - 6/25Posting for Super Potion - 6/10Out of Pokeball:Wearing - Loose white tank-top, black shorts, black hiking boots.

Katie Du'Mont Sure enough, he was there. She pushed open the door and barely took a step in before she saw him. The Professor's underwear drawer was sitting wide open, and Treecko was inside throwing his undies out into the room. "No, stop that!" What did he think he was doing?! She rushed towards him, but he'd spotted her and was already climbing the bedroom wall to the ceiling above. The little prick was actually laughing! This was nothing more than a game to him. "It's not funny, get down here." She hissed. Looking around desperately, she spotted a tray on the bedside table with a couple of mushrooms. Odd choice of a midnight snack, unless he was just bringing his work home to study at night. She grabbed one, holding it up to show the lizard. Did Treeckos even like mushrooms? She wasn't sure, but it was worth a shot.

Katie Du'Mont Suddenly there were voices from somewhere in the house, apparently the Wife was back home. "Here, come and have a treat." She said soothingly, trying to convey a calming tone and the sense that she wasn't upset with him. He looked curiously at the mushroom, and after what felt like an eternity he began to climb back down the wall. 'YES!' She thought, heart pounding wildly in her chest. He was on the dresser now. He was sniffing the mushroom. His hand was reaching out... Katie made a wild grab, snatching the Treecko up. If he didn't like the sudden assault, he kept his mouth shut and chewed his treat while she bolted back down the hallway and forced herself out of the window. Absolutely positive that the Professor's Wife caught a glimpse of her slipping out the window, she didn't stop until she was as far into the woods as she could get without getting lost.

JASPER COLE BAD COMPANY I CAN'T DENY BAD, BAD COMPANY TILL THE DAY I DIE UNTIL THE DAY I DIE The voyage passed uncomfortably for the tree Trainers and their boat driver... captain? Whatever. When they finally made port in what they could only assume was Littleroot Town (because that's where he told their Captain to take them), they dismounted with an air of being glad to get off the sea. It had gotten rocky at times, and even though they had all grown up on the water Rex found himself hurling over the side at least once. The trio made an imposing sight as they strutted into the Town like they owned the place. It was clear, painfully clear to anyone watching that they were not good people - and not the sort to be messed with. Anyone wise hurried inside and locked their doors as the strangers passed.
Jasper let out his Litten, who had been cooped up in a Pokeball far too long in Alola. As it was a stolen Pokemon, obviously his presence would have given them away, but here really was the fresh start they'd offered those other Trainers. Part of him had hoped they would come along, swell his ranks a bit more. There was power in numbers and in time he really wanted to be more powerful than the other criminal organizations he despised so much. He wanted to put them out of business. Litten looked up at him. "Mrau?" The cat could tell they were some place new. The air smelled different here, it wasn't tropical... they had obviously traveled far from the home Litten knew.
"It's fine. We have some business to deal with here, and I am going to need your help. We can't show any weakness, we have to be strong and take down anything that stands in our way, okay? If I bring you out, chances are we're going to need to fight our way out of something. There can be no time for sympathy or mercy. Do you understand?" He asked the cat, who hesitated with those large eyes staring up at him. Litten nodded and sounded his assent. You see, Pokemon are like people. Their behavior and natures can change depending on how they are raised. This feline, like all of Jasper's Pokemon, were becoming more and more like him the longer they were around each other. "Good. We know she's in Hoenn, because of what dear old Mom and Dad told me. These Regions have Gym Leaders, who know everything that goes on around their Towns and Cities. We should start by questioning them."Wearing - Default outfit. Thinking - So close. Out of Pokeball Wild Count - 56/? NPC count - 56/25 Vs Seeker - 1/15

JASPER COLE BAD COMPANY I CAN'T DENY BAD, BAD COMPANY TILL THE DAY I DIE UNTIL THE DAY I DIE Rex and Lucky had no need to ask what the plan was. Their leader had just explained their first steps to his Pokemon, and neither wanted to know what the end result was. They did know one thing for certain - that girl was not going to get out of this in one piece. They had their suspicions already that something bad had happened to her parents, based on something Jasper had said earlier, but that was not something they needed to know about either.
"Alright. Now we're all on the same page, let's get moving. We have a long walk ahead of us." Of course the boys would have liked to sleep after such a long voyage. It did not seem like that was going to happen though. They exchanged a look and hurried after their boss. They bypassed the Pokemon Professor's lab as well as all the houses and small shops. It was a quiet little town despite it's connection to the sea. The sort of town where a quiet young blonde might spend her time holed up in a quaint little book store window, reading with a hot, sweet cup of coffee beside her. In fact as they passed just such a bookstore, he glanced in half expecting to see her sitting there. Wearing - Default outfit. Thinking - So close. Out of Pokeball Wild Count - 57/? JASPER COLE BAD COMPANY I CAN'T DENY BAD, BAD COMPANY TILL THE DAY I DIE UNTIL THE DAY I DIE She was not there, as he'd imagined. Granted, he knew she would not be there. His imagination was getting the better of him now that he was getting SO close. He knew he was on the right path. It was as though something of her lingered in the air, left behind perhaps for weeks. This was not the case of course. He knew Rex and Lucky would not understand, so he did not bother to explain any of this to them. Litten lead the way as they walked, catching the eyes of youngsters who thought it was simply the cutest thing ever, but dared not approach any closer to the bad guys it was traveling with.
Finally they reached a long and winding path that would lead to the next town. A little wooden sign told them so. Jasper stopped for a moment and dug through the bag on Rex's shoulder. It was getting dark, so they were going to need.... yes! He pulled out a heavy flashlight, and turned it on to see how well it would work. There were dark places in Alola that made it nearly impossible to see anything around you. So he had wasted no time in stealing a heavy-duty flashlight. It illuminated the entire path from side to side with it's beam and stretched on ahead of them.

Nicolai "Servo" DakariWith little more than a curt nod, Nicolai accepted the professor's answer as accurate and stepped back outside into the rain. He was almost always courteous and polite to others unless they gave him reason to be, but in the success of acquiring what should have been just another piece of tech - the redhead's heart had beat just a little faster and with it, his mind had all but left the lab long before his body did. This was it. No more hiding, no more running. The plan was in motion now. He simply needed to follow the path. Ironically, his thoughts lined up with reality at the moment as he walked along a literal path through the slowly dissipating downpour. Soon it would cease entirely, he could see that in the way the drops became lighter every few minutes. "This is it Flux. This is the first of many victories for us." He spoke in a light tone to the ditto who had all but buried himself back into the depth's of it's trainer's clothing. Still, Nick felt the wriggling against his chest that symbolized the pokemon had both acknowledged his statement and agreed. No sooner had Nicolai returned to the heart of littleroot town and settled into a bench indicating that it was a stop for the nearby bus transit - than the rain ceased. On any other day he would have cursed the irony of his own luck, but today he merely peered out from beneath the shade of the overhang and peered at the very slowly clearing sky, smirking a bit. "It's going to take a lot more than that to stop me." He muttered cheerfully, the ditto in his outfit risking a peek back over his collar before practically squealing in joy and carefully sliding out from the protection offered by the man's clothes. Flux had just barely managed to get up the courage to let go of his collar and slide down onto the ground when Nick's quick hands caught the ditto by a chunk that could very well have been the ditto equivalent of 'scruff'. After pointing to the ground and letting flux's eyes follow to the puddle the poor thing would have splashed into, the ditto whined a bit before allowing it's trainer to set it on the bench next to him. "I told you, no getting sick again. I'm not in the business of nurturing sick Pokemon. You received that kindness one time, and it will be the last time." To most pokemon this would have been seen as a scolding, given the tone used when spoken. But Flux saw past that. She'd been working with Nicolai for a long time now and had grown accustomed to seeing beyond his surface expressions and tones. She was aware that he hated Pokemon, and was incredibly grateful to be among the few that he seemed to appreciate as comrades. After risking a look around, the little blob wriggled about a bit impatiently beside its trainer, shaping itself into the unmistakable shape of a question mark. "Oh? Fine then, go for it. But I hope you did a good perimeter check first. If you shift before you know the coast is clear you'll have to pay for that mistake later. And you know what that means." The first statement might not have been scolding, but this last bit certainly had been a warning. Flux shivered at the prospect, shambling up to the back of the bench and doing a much, MUCH more thorough inspection of the area before deciding she was ready. Almost immediately after, Flux's body began to ripple and change, quickly growing and forming limbs that had not been there before. The ditto had issues replicating certain features, but Nicolai's intensive training had helped through most of that so long as the pokemon held it's focus when transforming. That, combined with the fact that Flux had assumed this as one of her default forms as per nick's request meant that within seconds, the Ditto was no longer anywhere to be found, replaced instead by a woman with chestnut hair and rather mundane appearance overall. Sure, she was fit and slightly curvy - but nothing about her appearance stood out. Which was exactly the point Nick had made when choosing several persona's for the ditto to be able to replicate on command should they need to make a hasty exit. Flux patted down her new form carefully. The clothes were inanimate objects normally so replicating their actual feel was impossible for the ditto. But over time Flux had learned to at least give off the appearance of clothing for certain transformations. So long as no one touched her, she would look every bit as human as her trainer did. "Let me see your hands." the man in the black outfit stated calmly, swiveling his blue hues to Flux's new form. "Huh?" The simple question on Flux's mind came out as it always did, regardless of human shape, causing the Pokemon to place a hand over her mouth and flush in embarrassment as her trainer furrowed his brow. She knew better than to try and speak - and knew all to well that Nick would want to see the spot she most often messed up when transforming. Slowly, Flux lifted her hands, palms towards the redhead who inspected them a moment and then nodded. "You know better than to try and talk. But otherwise? Perfect."

Nicolai "Servo" DakariNicolai was considered largely by those who had known him to be several things. Cunning, efficient, patient, and downright scary among them. One thing nobody had ever known him for was greed. This was, in part because Nicolai didn't care heavily for having too many things in his life. The more you had, the more you had to lose - or at least that was what he had been taught as a child. With this in mind, normally not being able to walk into a store and purchase what he considered necessities for the road wouldn't have bothered the man at all. It would simply mean he had a greater challenge to rise to. the keyword in all of this thought as he stood outside the door to a small shop, however, was 'normally'. Everything he owned had been slowly destroyed by the lifestyle the man in the black suit had been forced to live for such a long time - and this last rainstorm had sealed the fate of any remaining gadgets or old company tech that he had tried to protect with his flimsy tent and a few small baggies. Perhaps it had been a poor judgment call on his part to stay up so late the night before starting this journey at long last, which was the reason he hadn't been prepared for the rain in the first place - but when you came from the same things a man like Nick had - excitement was difficult to quell as a result of its rarity. His eyes peered into the small electronics store cautiously, but not overly so. He didn't want to draw any extra attention to himself if he could avoid it. "We just need a few things to really get this party started." He commented absently even while Flux stood next to him, not so much admiring any of the tools or electrical equipment contained within the store as she was her own reflection. Truth be told - if Flux had to choose a human form? It would most certainly have been female. Maybe not the one she had now, but definitely female. The ditto loved how they looked in comparison to the male form, even if physically they didn't typically present the same level of strength. Plus, if the pokemon disguised as a human was being honest with itself, the females felt softer and more squishy. That was something a Ditto would never be unable to relate to since its natural state was quite literally a squishy blob. "I wish you would let me pick something a little more..." Flux cut herself off with yet another clamping palm over her mouth, shooting Nicolai an apologetic look before he could scold her... Which he did not. The male had been so absorbed with acquiring whatever it was he needed for his 'master' plan that he hadn't even heard the outburst. Flux tilted her head, the curly chestnut hair she had falling to one side while she studied him. If the human was this embedded in thought, that meant either something really good was about to happen - or that she would be committing a crime. Usually, it was the latter but a ditto could dream, right? "Flux. I need you to get something for me.." Nick had finally turned to face his disguised comrade, placing a hand onto her shoulder and giving it a light squeeze. Of course, he needed her to get something. Nicolai always needed her to get something. Nicolai "Servo" DakariFlux frowned, even as her trainer seemed incredibly pleased by the recovery of the small list of things he had asked her to... Procure. The ditto masquerading as a human had no actual qualms when it came to stealing material objects - any objections the ditto may have had about the sin had been long since washed away in it's service to nick. No, this discouragement was due to the fact that she had actually believed her trainer when he said that they needed to commit to the role of honest, moral citizens. Sure, flux knew that eventually once his task was completed, they would most certainly return to the shadows from whence they came. But she had hoped that, for a time at least, they could enjoy some regular adventures like she had experienced during her time under the ownership of her previous trainer. The thought of the last human who had taken care of flux caused an unnatural shudder to come over the humanoid figure. Their adventures had been 'regular' indeed - but even someone as bad as Nicolai was better than the other woman. "What's wrong?" Nick asked, shaking the ditto from its revere. Being caught day dreaming had meant the ditto wasn't practicing any of the typical things Nicolai had taught her over the years. Eyes up, face neutral, surveying everything and everyone around them to ensure they were never caught off guard. Flux flushed a bit, shaking her head so quickly that the curly hair she currently had whipped in front of her face viciously. Even if she had been able to talk, the ditto wouldn't have said anything to Nick. The redhead was good at so many things... Pure, honest understanding was not among them. As they continued to walk, a new bag of seemingly random gadgets in her trainer's hand, Flux set herself back to the task of maintaining a perimeter watch. It was a paranoid habit, but the Pokemon found a sort of relaxation in it. A truly keen understanding of all surroundings took quite a bit of mental focus, focus that was gratefully stolen from thoughts of her last life. Had the ditto not been watching everything else in the world around them, she might have seen her trainer occasionally casting an eye her way. It was only for a fleeting instance at a time, but the more they walked - the more certain Nicolai had grown certain of what it was that ailed his comrade. loving and affectionate were not apart of Nicolai's repertoire, especially when it came to pokemon. He typically didn't care one way or another what his subordinates actually thought of him. He couldn't be afforded the luxury of caring with a task like his. However, no one the redhead with the goggles around his neck had ever known could say he wasn't perceptive and cunning. He knew what bothered Flux, and more importantly? He knew it needed to be rectified since he would need the creature performing top-notch for a particularly extended period of time. Flux was currently his most adaptable Pokemon - and in pure combat ability even managed to just barely exceed Quanta. If he wanted to get through the first few gyms, he would most certainly be counting on his tiny counterpart. With this in mind, and his ditto distracted by a crowd of what he knew Flux was paying keen attention to due to his training, the redhead managed to virtually vanish from sight, something the Pokemon pretending to be human didn't catch for several moments. When she did notice that her trainer had gone missing, the woman frantically began looking around in an almost panicked fashion. He had just been here! There was no way Nicolai could simply have walked away without her noticing? Right? As the expression on Flux's face became more and more frantic, the ditto was almost certain she would begin to cry. At the last moment, however, she felt a tap on her shoulder, one that nearly made her jump from her second skin as she jerked around in surprise to find... Her trainer, a frown on his face and what appeared to be a frosted treat in his free hand, one that he offered to her casually after a shrug. "You need to work on your awareness. Everything I've told you to keep an eye out for, you do - but you can't let other things slip by you just because you happen to see one of the key phrases I taught you in your training. It should have been a mere glance to that group to know they were merely workers, not spies." Despite his tone and expression, Nicolai reoffered the treat to flux who eyed it curiously before taking it with both hands as if she were certain it would break if she wasn't careful. "It's strawberry. I know you prefer chocolate but you need to try new things." Even though she knew she had just been scolded, Flux's now hazel eyes lit up at this revelation, her tongue poking out in a near goofy fashion. There were so many wonderful things about assuming a human form, listening to her feet slap on pavement, being more than a foot tall, having fingers to reach out and touch things. But above all else, her trainer was keenly aware of one thing that could bring his Pokemon back from any dark place - and that thing was a frozen wonder called icecream. KAISER KWON. < Kaiser? >
Kaiser blinked as a hoarse, disembodied voice spoke her name. "Uh, yeah?" she said, glancing around. She was just outside of Professor Birch's Laboratory, where the sun was bright, the sidewalk was clean, and there was no one around except for a few passersby. Just when she was starting to wonder whether she was experiencing stress-induced auditory hallucinations, the voice spoke again.
< Kaiser Kwon? >
"Yes, that's me," Kaiser said into thin air, more impatiently this time. "Where--ow!"
A parcel dropped onto her head from above and thudded onto the ground. Kaiser snapped her eyes up to where a Murkrow was perched on the lower pat of the Laboratory, gazing impassively down at her.
"What the hell was that for?" Kaiser groused, picking the parcel up and dusting it off. Before she could complain some more, though, she realized that the parcel was addressed to her. Confused, she crouched down on the sidewalk, ripped away a strip of tape, then opened it up, all while keeping an eye on the Murkrow.
Inside the parcel was an uncolored TM, a small device with two protruding rods, a held item shaped like a bomb, a Pokeball, and a letter. Kaiser picked up the letter and read the following:
Kaiser,
Congratulations on getting the job! (Because of course there's no way you couldn't have gotten it, right?) We all chipped in and put together a late going-away present for you. Surprise! There's some useful items, but best of all we found a Flying-type breeder and got you a trained messenger Murkrow.
Call us every day, okay? We miss you already!
P.S. He responds to "Orville."
At the bottom, the letter was filled with signatures from all her younger siblings.
"Idiots," Kaiser muttered, though tears were gathering in her eyes for the second time that day. "I kept telling them I didn't want a present."
Sniffling, she folded the letter and carefully placed it in her satchel, along with the other items that came in the parcel. She paused when she got to the Pokeball, examined it, and then pointed it at the Murkrow. "This yours?"
The Murkrow nodded.
Kaiser gestured at her shoulder. "Well, then get over here already. We have places to be."

Kaiser made her way to the nearest public park. It was a weekday afternoon, so the park was empty of its usual crowd of children, students, and families. Kaiser collapsed onto an unoccupied bench, watching an elderly couple enjoy a picnic beneath a shade tree.
"So," Kaiser said as the Murkrow hopped onto an arm rest. She rolled her shoulder, wincing as pain prickled over the places where his talons had broken skin. "Orville, huh?"
< Kaiser, > he cawed, stretching out his wings. Sunlight glossed his deep blue feathers. Kaiser frowned, unsure of whether he understood that word to be her name or her siblings had simply trained him to repeat it.
"Uh-huh. Kaiser," she said, pointing to herself in case the latter was true. "That's me. And you're Orville. Say it back."
The Murkrow blinked at her. < Kaiser Kwon. >
Kaiser dragged a hand down her face, suddenly exhausted. "We'll work on it," she said, although she hadn't the faintest idea of where to start. She looked at the Pokeball still clutched in her hands, remembering that she had yet to release her starter. Best to get that done sooner rather than later, she supposed.
She pressed the button on the Pokeball and waited for something to happen.

A Torchic materialized in a flash of brilliant red light. Kaiser could practically hear the gears turn in her head as she glanced between Kaiser, Orville, and the park as a whole, which was most certainly not the Laboratory she'd spent the better part of her life in. It was as if she had just hatched and was seeing the world for the first time.
"Uh, hi," Kaiser said, giving an awkward little wave.
After a moment of silence, the Torchic bolted.
"Wh-- hey! Get back here!" Kaiser sputtered, scrambling off the bench to chase after her. As the Torchic streaked across the park, leaving flattened grooves of grass in her wake, she produced a long, exultant cry that startled a couple of Pidgeys in a tree into taking wing. Bewildered though Kaiser had been at first, it didn't take long for her to realize that the Torchic was running simply for the pure joy of it, for the freedom of the great outdoors.
Despite her clumsy gait, the Torchic proved to be surprisingly quick. Each time Kaiser made a grab for her, she put on an extra burst of speed. "Do something, Orville," Kaiser puffed to the Murkrow flying low just overhead.
< Kaiser, > Orville croaked, doing a somersault.
"Cool! Thanks for nothing!"
Kaiser had lost enough ground that when the Torchic ducked behind a tree, disappearing from view, it took a few seconds for her to follow suit. There the Torchic was, puffing her chest up as she faced off against a wild Zigzagoon.
"Please don't do what you're about to do," Kaiser said with her hands on her knees, gasping for air between each word.
With a spirited gleam in her eye, the Torchic lunged. Wild Pokemon: 7/5 Trainer Battle: 7/25 Berry Pot: 7/25 {Pokemon Team} Name: N/A Species: Torchic Gender: Female Level: 05 HP: 40 EXP: 12/15 Ability: Speed Boost Moves:- Scratch -- 30.

Although she had the advantage of the first move, the Torchic was so eager to rush in that she ended up missing by a long shot. As she faltered on one foot, unbalanced by the lost momentum of her Scratch, the Zigzagoon darted around her and rammed a Tackle into her back.
As both Pokemon fell struggling to the ground, Kaiser fumbled with Pokedex she'd withdrawn from one of her satchel pockets. "Why isn't it turning on?" she said despairingly, jamming buttons and flipping switches at random. Something must have worked, because the device emitted a red beam of light that swept over the Torchic's body. Words began to sprawl across the screen, accompanied by a vaguely feminine voice-over.
Torchic, the Chick Pokemon. It has a flame sac—
"Didn't ask, don't care," Kaiser muttered, skipping the text and scrolling down to the moveset. She glanced over at the battle, where the Torchic and Zigzagoon had just picked themselves up and were raring to go again.
Kaiser called, "Hey, Torchic! Use, uh, um." She checked the Pokedex. "Growl?"
The Torchic flared out her downy wings, a Growl rumbling low in her throat. She looked more adorable than threatening, not that it deterred the Zigzagoon from hitting her with another Tackle.
"What the hell? That didn't even do anything!" Kaiser thrust the Pokedex back into her pocket as the Torchic staggered backwards, battered and close to fainting. Orville, who was perched on an tree branch above, looked on with faint amusement. Kaiser threw her hands up into the air. "Shit, I don't even-- just use Scratch, okay?"
With the last of her strength, the Torchic lashed out and raked her talons down the Zigzagoon's flank. Although Kaiser expected it to retaliate, triumphing over the Torchic out for once and for all, the Scratch had apparently been enough to knock it out cold.
Before the Torchic could even begin to bask in her victory, Kaiser reached down and grabbed her by the scruff of her neck.

One lecture on the dangers of looking before leaping, two Potions, and ten minutes later, Kaiser was still ranting. "I mean, really! You could've died or something!" she grumbled, lifting one of the Torchic's wings and spraying the underside of it with yet another Potion, although at this point she had been completely cured of her wounds. She and Orville exchanged amused glances, which Kaiser was too peeved to notice. "At least warn me next time you think about running off to who knows where. Uh, well, I guess you can't speak. Not that it matters because you shouldn't be running off anyway. Okay? Okay. Are you even listening?"
The Torchic cheeped, although she didn't have the grace to look the slightest bit sheepish. If anything, she looked more cheerful now than ever before. Kaiser sighed and sat heavily down on the grass, crossing her legs. She gestured for Orville to come down from the tree branch and for the Torchic to come closer. They did so, gazing up at her expectantly.
"So I guess introductions are in order," Kaiser said stiffly, her posture ramrod straight. Her protective instinct had kicked in when she'd noticed how close to fainting the Torchic was. Now that she was better, though, Kaiser seemed to remember that she had no experience in communicating with Pokemon.
She turned to the Torchic. "I'm Kaiser." She flicked her hand at Orville. "This is--"
< Orville, > the Murkrow squawked, bowing with one wing tucked in front of his body and one wing behind.
Kaiser whipped around. "So you can say your name!" she said, pointing an accusatory finger at him. "Why the hell were you playing dumb before?"
< Kaiser Kwon, > the Murkrow said, sounding rather pleased with himself.
Kaiser took a deep, grounding breath. "Fine. Whatever." She faced the Torchic once more. "And you're... I don't know. Nephelie. How does Nephelie sound?"
If someone with a beak could beam, the Torchic was certainly doing so now. Kaiser let some tension drop from her shoulders. "Good. Now that that's over with, let's go over our game plan."

"I'm doing some research for Professor Birch right now. My first assignment is to capture two different Pokemon from two different locations." Kaiser pulled up a map of Hoenn on her phone and placed it on the grass for Nephelie and Orville to see. "Right now we're in Littleroot Town. I guess I could catch a Pokemon here, but I don't think it would be useful to do part of the assignment so close to the Lab. Instead I'll do my captures in Petalburg City and Rustboro City." She pointed to each location. "You guys are gonna help me with that. We clear so far?"
Both Nephelie and Orville made an affirmative sound of some kind.
"Good. This way I get a sample from two kinds of urban environments. We'll hang out for a bit so I can write my report and wait for Professor Birch to get back to me." Kaiser glanced up. "How do you guys feel about a gym battle?"
Nephelie cheered, kicking one of her feet in the air. Orville just gave the winged equivalent of a shrug.
"At least one of us is excited," Kaiser said dryly. Like Orville, she wasn't all that interested in going through the gym circuit. She was training Pokemon for service, not for sport. Still, gym badges afforded a kind of authority that the title of "research assistant" simply lacked. She wasn't one to back down from a challenge anyhow.
"If we leave now and set a good pace, we can make it to Oldale before it gets dark." Kaiser stood up, dusting the seat of her jeans off. As if on cue, Orville fluttered down to her shoulder and Nephelie trotted to heel. "Let's roll out."
It was then that her phone began to ring.

Kaiser's ringtone was a low-quality audio clip of an amateur punk rock band playing in a garage somewhere. Violet was the name printed on the caller ID. "It's my manager," she said, more to herself than for the benefit of her Pokemon. She had rotated between three part-time jobs while she was in high school, and she still kept all her work contacts in her phone. "Ex-manager, I guess. This better be good."
Displeased though she was about having her exit interrupted, Kaiser picked up the call and held her phone to her ear. "What now?"
"Oh, Kaiser! Thank Arceus you picked up!" said the voice on the other end of the line. It was bright and cheerful, although harried. Pans were clattering and stoves sizzling in the background. "Please tell me you're still in the area."
Kaiser looked out at the sun-drenched park. "I am, but what's it to you? Aren't you working right now?" It was the rush hour right about now, with workers all over town placing delivery orders for their lunch break. Kaiser cringed just thinking of the chaos.
"That's why I called, actually. Can you come in for a shift, like, now?"
One deep breath. Two deep breaths. Kaiser pinched the bridge of her nose, exhaling slowly. "Violet."
"Yes?"
"You do know that I quit, right? So I could start doing Pokemon research? You threw me a party and everything."
Violet made a dismissive sound. "Yes, well, we just have so many orders coming in right now, and your replacement isn't half as good as you. Pretty please, Kaiser? This is the last thing I'll ever ask of you."
Kaiser doubted it, but she relented with a sigh. "I'll be there in ten."
"Great, see you then!" With that, Violet hung up.

Smiling Ladle, a memorable name if there ever was one, was a delivery-only, virtual restaurant that brought Kantonese cuisine directly to your door. It was based in a commercial kitchen building that was rented by the hour, which was split between Smiling Ladle and a popular cooking class. Kaiser let herself in through the back door, recalling all those hours she'd spent biking from neighborhood to neighborhood, her bike basket filled to overflowing with takeout boxes.
Violet was already waiting there for her. She looked the same as ever—purple-haired, soft-faced, clad in an apron so splattered with cooking oil that it was impossible to determine its original color. "There you are! Are these your Pokemon?" She waggled her fingers at the Murkrow on Kaiser's shoulder and crouched down to coo over her Torchic. "They're so cute! You know, recently we've been getting complaints from some of the faraway customers that their food cools down by the time they get it. Torchics have a naturally high body temperature, right? Maybe yours can help keep the goods piping hot while you're out and about."
"Uh, yeah, I guess," Kaiser said, embarrassed that Violet seemed to know more about Torchics than she did. "Orville here is a specially trained messenger Murkrow too." According to her siblings, at least. "He can do the high-priority deliveries." Assuming that he would deign to follow her instructions.
"Perfect! Gather 'round, then," Violet said, pulling up a map speckled with delivery locations on her tablet. "Let's start figuring out who will go where."

Violet pointed at several pulsing red dots scattered over the map. "Look at this, Orville," she said, prompting the Murkrow to hop onto the table and lean over the tablet. "Here are the customers who placed express orders. Can you memorize these locations?"
< Kaiser, > Orville said with a perplexed shake of his feathers. < Kwon, Kwon. >
Kaiser had no idea what that meant, but Violet sank into her seat with a resigned sign. "Yeah, I guess that's too much to ask of a Pokemon on such short notice. Even I don't think I could keep all that in my head."
"Don't give up so easily," Kaiser said, having no qualms with chiding a woman half a dozen years her senior. She recalled how Orville had been waiting for her outside the Laboratory. There must have been a way for him to locate her miles from home. She tapped the tablet. "Can you convert this to a satellite map? It might help him to see some topography instead of a bunch of lines and dots."
Violet perked up. "Good idea!" She tapped a switch in the corner of the screen, filling the map with a quilt of photographs with a bird's-eye view. Some of the red dots were on top of constructions sites or office buildings, others on apartments and townhouses. After studying the map for a few moments, Orville straightened up and nodded.
Violet disappeared into the noisy kitchen and reappeared with a stack of takeout boxes inside a tote bag. "I ordered the deliveries so that they go from the left of the map to the right," she said, pushing the bag towards Orville. "Be a good Murkrow and get these to where they need to be, okay? There's a tasty meal in it for you."
Kaiser held her breath, afraid that Orville would ignore Violet the way he often ignored her. To her disbelief, though, he saluted with one wing, took up the handles of the bag in his claws, and flew straight out the open window.
"He listens to you way better than he does to me," Kaiser muttered, both offended and dismayed.
"Don't give up so easily," Violet said with a grin, parroting Kaiser's words back to her. Kaiser shot a glare at her, but Violet had already returned to the tablet. She pointed at the farthest-flung dots on the map, most of which were on almost the opposite side of town, and passed another bag of deliveries over to Kaiser. "Kaiser, you and your Torchic can take this route. Remember to keep the food warm!"
"Yeah, yeah. Send me a screenshot of the map," Kaiser said, looping her arm through the bag handles. Nephelie attempted to recreate Orville's salute, but her wings were too small for it to quite work. With Violet's blessings, the two of them headed back out the door and onto the street.

The first leg of the journey was going smoothly enough, although Kaiser had to call Nephelie back whenever she started to rush ahead. Nephelie balanced one takeout box at a time on her back as she trotted along, which Kaiser switched out every once in awhile with another one. Violet was right—the Torchic did have a remarkably high body temperature, which made Kaiser curious as to what else she didn't know about her species.
As they walked, Kaiser pulled out her Pokedex and scanned Nephelie again. Unlike before, she didn't skip the voice-over when it started playing.
Torchic, the Flame Pokemon. It has a flame sac inside its belly that perpetually burns. It feels warm if it is hugged.
Pokemon sure were strange. Kaiser read about Nephelie's ability, which gradually boosted her speed over the course of the battle. It reminded her of their first encounter in the park, how Nephelie somehow got further and further away while Kaiser was chasing after her. Shaking her head, Kaiser scrolled down to Nephelie's moveset and paused once she reached the third entry. That was new.
"Since when did you know Ember?" Kaiser said. When she didn't hear so much as a peep from below, she glanced over to where Nephelie was supposed to be. She wasn't there. Dread gathering in the pit of her stomach, she looked ahead to where a wild Poochyena was chasing an agitated Nephelie up and down the street.
Cursing under her breath, Kaiser jogged over to get a better look at the commotion. The Poochyena was slavering as he ran after the Torchic, his eyes locked onto the takeout box on Nephelie's back. He lunged for it every so often, but Nephelie managed to stumble out of reach each time. Once Nephelie started to sprint past Kaiser, she snatched the box up and stuffed it back into her tote bag.
"This isn't for you," Kaiser said to the Poochyena, making a shooing motion with her hands. The Poochyena skidded to a stop, his ears pinned against his head as he gazed longingly at her tote bag. She turned to Nephelie, who was peeking at him from behind her legs, and said, "Just leave him alone. He'll lose interest if we ignore him long enough."
But of course Nephelie would never make it that easy for her.

The Torchic puffed her chest out, Growling at the Poochyena. "What did I literally just say?" Kaiser said, exasperated, as the Poochyena bared his teeth at the provocation. He leaped and Tackled her into a pile of leaves on the sidewalk, where Nephelie managed to wrestle him off with her talons. She took a deep breath from deep within her belly, and suddenly Kaiser remembered that third move in her Pokedex entry.
"Nephelie, don't!" she called out. "Use Scratch instead!"
Nephelie blinked at Kaiser, confused, but she complied nonetheless. With a single Scratch, the Poochyena was down for the count. Nephelie trotted back over to Kaiser, who was already waiting with a Potion in hand.
"You were going to use Ember, weren't you?" Kaiser said, spraying the Potion over Nephelie's bruises. When she gave an affirmative cluck, Kaiser gestured to the pile of leaves the Pokemon had fallen into. "This could've gone up in flames and hurt you along with the Poochyena. You're not immune to your own fire, you know."
Nephelie glanced back at the leaf pile, a spark of realization in her eyes. With a happy chirp, she began to run loops around Kaiser's legs.
Kaiser frowned. "What's up with you? C'mon, let's get going again. We have to make up for lost time."

Nephelie stuck close to Kaiser after that encounter, so the rest of the journey was smooth sailing. Whenever Kaiser stopped to make a delivery, the family or office workers or whoever had ordered it cooed over the little Torchic who had warmed their food on the way over. Nephelie basked so shamelessly in the attention, prancing in circles like a show Ponyta, that Kaiser had to drag her away so they could make the next location in time. By the time they finished their deliveries, Kaiser was thoroughly exhausted and Nephelie as energized as ever, if not more so than before.
When they returned to the Smiling Ladle, the sight that met them was a folding table covered in plastic trays of rich Kantonese cuisine. Noodles slathered with spicy sauce, plump dumplings, stir fry—it was a veritable buffet, and Kaiser's mouth was watering just looking at it. Orville was already on the stable, already pecking away at the plate Violet must have filled for him.
"Welcome back!" Violet said, waving from her seat.
Kaiser pulled out a chair for Nephelie and then another one for herself. "Not that I'm not grateful, but what's all this about?"
Violet beamed as she placed an assortment of Pokemon-friendly food on Nephelie's plate. "It's your reward, silly! And your going-away party. Two birds with one stone, eh? Er, no offense, Orville."
"You do know that you already threw me a party, right?" Kaiser said with a roll of her eyes, although she couldn't fight back her smile. "I'm pretty sure I told you that over the phone."
"Why have one party when you can have two?" As she spoke, Violet filled two plastic cups with sparkling water, pushed one towards Kaiser, and lifted her own. "Now let's have a toast. To Smiling Ladle's success!"
"To Smiling Ladle's success," Kaiser agreed.
They clinked their cups together and began to feast.
